100000% agree with this. It's been a big thought of mine especially at my home lake diamond valley lake. People who have no clue aimlessly cast the same bait in the same spot for hours "programming" these bass. Has been one of my thoughts for a couple years now.

So I’m a pond guy right now, sold my kayak a few years ago. Not too many decent ponds where I am. But the best pond I know of has 1 guy that pulls up at 6am every single day and casts the same few lures…at the same exact position. For hours and hours. I’ve caught 6lb bass off this dock he sits on. He only catches a couple sub 1lb bass per day, but he still won’t leave the spot…he even takes photos of the tiny bass and posts every single picture on Fishbrain LOL. So anyways, now that dock is practically an unfishable spot if you want anything over 2lbs. I’m considering showing him this video but I don’t want to seem too rude lmao

I agree 200% I've seen this so many times both bass and musky fishing. I usually leave and come back later to give them a chance to let them get back on that ambush point with a different bait or from a different angle.

I agree with your hypothesis, pretty hard to disagree with it given the scenario you proposed. But when I've had declining followers per cast I don't always assume they're perceiving my swimbait as fake. Occasionally non-feeding bass simply perceive it as non-threatening and lose interest. These are the biggest fish settled down in there and if they're not hungry they don't move unless they've got a damn good reason to.... If bass aren't hungry they still like to fight to protect their territory and they ain't got no arms and they ain't got no legs!! Definitely try a more threatening retrieve before you take off for another spot. Kick the bottom up, throw a little pop pop at that big fat bully bitch and she'll kick your fake lures ass!!!
If not, then I would say move on :-)

Meanwhile, up north... the lake I fish the most has stained water all year long. Excessive phosphorous content, a grass carp problem, and did I mention it's only 9 ft. deep in all 1500 acres? All of this still applies. Great info, great content as always... Keep it coming!

Yep! Great concept! The first thing I ask the guys at the dock (DVL), is “ what are the bass doing, and “what are they catching them on? Typical answer; bass are deep, and dropshot. So, I do the exact opposite!

Everything you said is accurate. This remains true for people who fish lures wrong like huddlestons or deps and it trains the fish into realizing those lures are fake every time they see it

Definitely earned my subscription after this video. I’m really glad to hear information I can apply to more than just swimbait fishing. Keep pumping out more seminars like this, great work!
I 100% agree. Some of my buddies try to say that bass aren’t smart enough to process this information but I really do give them the benefit of the doubt and give them probably more credit than they deserve.

Great vid man! My dad was talking about the same thing last summer. This led him to pick a bait that had a color and action that was "out of season" which was a red shad rap in the middle of a hot summer day. He caught a 6lber right after that! I definitely agree that fish can be programmed after seeing the same baits in the same spots and we as anglers need to take this into consideration.

Really enjoying these videos and the philosophical aspect of things! I think anyone outside of bass fishing might be critical and state that you're essentially anthropomorphizing the fish to some degree, but we've all experienced what you're talking about first hand. Playing mind games with the fish, many of whom have brains no bigger than the size of a peanut, is what it takes to fool true giants; otherwise everyone would be catching them! Understanding that and applying it is something that undoubtedly contributes to the larger fish catches we see coming from this channel

I have also observed this. I do this a lot with lipless and chatter baits. I believe there are fish out there that know the signature sound of certain baits and to avoid them. after Ive been casting in an area for a bit and feel like no is following anymore and I'm continuously making the same rattle sound come through the same area I stop and swtich up or move on to keep the fish from running a pattern on me.

I couldn't agree more this is a video all bass fisherman should soak in that . If your fishing gigantic lakes this isnt as bad but here in orange county fishing tiny ponds the pressure is extremely intense. I see guys casting in the same spot for hours with the same lure expecting to catch fish, teaching them its unnatural and never getting bit.

Living in the Midwest I can count on one hand how many guys throw Big swimbaits around here. My favorite lake I am the only one- at least in the last 5 years I’ve fished it. I have the same thoughts on programming the fish to recognize baits- my honey holes only get a couple casts every hour or two. I usually mix up the baits each cast too. Just wish I had a battle shad for them to eat!

There's cases where there's no other option. Whitney Portals is a prime example. The pond is about 30'x30', 3 feet deep, gin clear, and those trout have seen everything. Even if you use Powerbait, good luck. It takes all day to catch 3 fish, but I could walk across the parking lot to Lone Pine Creek and catch like 20 brookies in an hour.

I was in my kayak throwing a swim jig when my buddy pulled up in his bass boat. We chatted and passed a doob for about 10 mins and I was occasionally throwing the jig while we did so. My buddy took off and 2 casts later I caught a 6 pounder. I was telling the owner of my local tackle shop about the fish and he said "you probably caught that fish because the boat left". I hadn't made that connection but he might have been right. It definitely could've just been a coincidence but maybe the fish relaxed once the boat was gone and decided to eat.

I totally agree with this. I've seen it happen with deep cranking. A bass can only see a chart blue back 8XD before they stop eating them. I'm lucky to be in a place where bass don't see big swimbait as much so most are still super aggressive/curious

If you can teach a fish in a tank you're going to feed them and with time they learn when you are going to feed them then in the wild they can learn when a lure is fake,i agree with you on that point bro, people think fish are dumb but no at all they know what is necessary for them to thrive

I move areound the lake every 15 minutes. I've had alot of fish move back onto spots after that time. Idk if its memory or what. Pluss less pressure on the fish means less stress and they will return to those areas after the spawn the next year sometimes

I am new to big swim-baits and I am learning. This is good info. Question, why not fire out another kind of swim bait on the second and third cast instead of repeating the same bait? Also, I have noticed on live scope, when you either catch a bass from a spot, the followers get pulled away from the initial spot and are now wandering aimlessly around. They usually don’t return to the spot.
I remember long ago when the Alabama rig became popular in Bass tournaments. I used to watch competitors just throw and throw to a single area for a long time. Then, all of a sudden a big keeper would commit and be caught. I often wondered was this repetitive casting drawing the bass from distance to the spot. Thanks for the videos

I agree and i think they are smart when it comes to artificial lures and repetitive movements. Ive seen literally 50 bass in an area and none of them bit anything that day and you could see all the berkley packages from people out there fishing. I think the learn same as any animal. The older they are the smarter they get.

It’s not just bass I have witnessed blue gill, bream, different shad species, blue back herring, black back herring, herring,American herring and minnow species learning the same thing so the learn overtime not hit what they can visualize that look and feels fake to them you can still catch them because more than the bait they see us and put 2 and 2 together and it clicks to them now I don’t know their mind but I know by their actions

According to a fish biologists video here on TH-cam bass only have the mental capacity to memorize 15 minutes, and then whatever happened to them is pretty much gone. Take that with a grain of salt if you please but it’s coming from somebody who makes a living and spends his life building trophy bass ponds/lakes.

The guy in thst vid is Rob Lusk. Really smart guy.
His theories don't really refute this idea, it just explains why you can come back later and catch fish.
The same reason almost everyone has caught a fish with a broken off lure or hook in its mouth.

I have a situation going on in the body of water that I am fishing that might be cause from this. Well to start off I'm fishing a large old/ongoing limerock quarry here in North Central Florida. Its not Over fished by anymeans but something has happened.
I've fished it in the past and have done very well (especially with swimbaits and catching large bass. ) I have fished the last 3 weeks every afternoon during the week and morning/afternoon/nights during the weekends.
I haven't even laid eyes on a bass Over 3lbs... nor have I had ANY followers even worth speaking on.
    Really has me stumped.
If ANYONE has any info or would give there 2 sense on what could be going on or what has happened, would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.
(and yes all that is being thrown is "big baits")
