Clancy - True Potato Seed - From Seed to Harvest

- This was my first time growing and harvesting potatoes from true potato seed, TPS. Honestly, is was tough. Poor germination, very slow initial growth, only 25% of my seeds made it to harvest (3 out of 12). That being said, I will/am grow TPS again. Having the genetic diversity and possibly having something totally unique just sounds too cool not to do. I can grow potatoes year-round in my Oakland Ca zone 10a climate.

Thanks so much for showing the harvest. With difficult times ahead of us in this nation, starting in fall of 2023, we better all get as much seed as possible and get to practicing our gardening and harvesting our own seed. You're going to need all you can get.
It is a skill I saw lots while growing up in Alaska. My grandparents were homesteaders in the '30s in Alaska. People had a lot more survival skills then.
Hi there! I live in the Neatherlands. Great harvest indeed. Something you should know is that there is a good reason to grow from seeds. When you are planting tubers year after year, the chance of disease grows rapidly. The potatoes you harvested are meant for next year's seading potatoes for like risk free, disease free growing/harvesting for about 3 years. These are first generation grown from true seeds, they Wil result in larger harvest then otherwise. Take it from me, here in the Netherlands we know all about crop failures due to potato disease.
Thank you for the information. I would be devastated to loose a whole crop to disease. I will definitely save some of the potatoes to replant as seed potatoes next season.

A little research tells me that every plant grown from true potato seed is genetically unique and will produce tubers with characteristics different from the parent. Every potato plant grown from seed is a NEW VARIETY! I think it would be interesting to do an experiment: grow out some potato seeds alongside planting some of the smallest potatoes from your harvest and compare your yields. 😊
I do think of gardening as a science experiment. I'd love to try your idea out some time.
I harvested berries two years ago on Yukon gold plants. Last year, i tried to start some and kept 1 tps plant alive in a grow bag for the whole season. The plant was very small, far from the size of a standard potato plant but it looked pretty healty.
I ended up getting a big 4 ounces divided in 12 small to very tiny lumpers. I have 8 small tubers germinating in a brown bag ready for the next season.

It's like an experiment where you never know what you'll get. After this video, we ate most of the potatoes but I saved enough to plant this season as traditional "seed potato" not TPS. The Clancy I grew from TPS, then saved and planted are now about ready to harvest. I am excited to see what I get out of a second generation.
I bet the seed you saved will get better and better because they are adapted to your climate now. In successive years you can even start to selectively save seed from the plants you want, wether it is larger tubers, earlier, disease resistant, etc.
Or you could even cross with other varieties and try a landrace project for your area. The possibilities are endless 😊
I sprouted these seeds about 4 weeks ago. I will be planting them out soon. I grow potatoes in my mild winter here.
@@OutdoorScienceDad I've never tried growing over winter but we usually plant regular seed potatoes out on Valentine's Day or close to it.
I ordered two varieties of seed potatoes I haven't grown before and I'm debating on setting a couple out and see what happens. I also have three packs of TPS I haven't sprouted yet but I'm wondering if I could get them through my winter here. I'm on the edge of 8b/9a. The last two years the winter has been cooler than normal for us though.
@@almostoily7541 If you have the space, I think you should go for it. That's still a relatively mild winter zone. I get away with it better in 10a, here. Where do you find TPS seeds? I only have ever seen seen these, Clancy, at my local garden center.
@@OutdoorScienceDad I originally ordered from seedman online but I think they are sold out. I looked last week. I saw Clancy somewhere online. It may have been Southern Exposure Seed Exchange or Botanical Interests. I've never ordered from those two before. I've gotten plant markers with the orders I got from seedman. I thought that was a nice extra.

I just picked some of the potato seed pods (Green) [Poisonous to eat] and wrapped the rest right on the plant so they can mature and fall off. Very first time doing this so thank you very much. I never noticed the seed packets in the store. I will just plant alot of my own. I may buy some packs of seeds to have in an emergency. Thank you.
I am ready to harvest second generation Clancy potatoes. I grew this batch from seed, then saved some of those potatoes. I planted them a few months ago as traditional "seed potatoes" and they will be reay to harvest in 2-3 weeks. I am interested to see if the variety produces more by true seed, or seed potato.
One of the best TPS progression videos I have seen! Your harvest was awesome! I finally got potato berries last summer, started them Dec 30th and now have 16 seedlings! Pretty excited. I am tracking my progress as well. Will be a true mystery what the variety will be. Mother was a Yukon Gold. Other potatoes I grew nearby were Russian Banana, French Fingerling and Red Gold.

I am! Actually up-potting the seedlings later today into a clear bottomed container. Germination at around 85-90% at 4 weeks.@@OutdoorScienceDad

So cool! I've never grown potatoes from seed or seen berries on my potato plants. I'm not sure if that due to negligence or the variety of potato. Thank you for filming and sharing your experience with us!
My pleasure. Thank you for watching and commenting. I have grown potatoes from potatoes a bunch of times in the past and have never seen flowers nor berries. This was the first time I’ve seen them and it was also the first time I’ve grown from true seed, so maybe it must be from seed to get the berries? I’m a little too nervous to have a perfect answer for you though.
Berries come after the flowers. I grow potatoes in Alaska currently but also previously in Louisiana. The potatoes produce berries in both climates. The berries are toxic so care must be taken when saving the seeds from the berries. The problem is that you never know what potatoes will grow from the seeds as they usually don't follow the parent plant. It's fun to get different types but not practical to rely upon for food.
The reason you’ve never seen berries before is that a lot of modern varieties abort their flowers (some are sterile or very unlikely to set berries) and weather conditions need to be just right.
i wouldn't be surprised if common potato varieties are bred specifically to reduce fruiting

Very cool! I am going to try and grow these. I just purchased seeds and wondered about them. I've harvested ones from a planted store bought potato and grew some funny potatoes. I Don't like that they are pelleted, I have bad luck with them germinating. 😅. I read that potatoes germinate better when they have warm days and cold nights or a difference in the temps every 12 hours. I am going to try and keep the trays outside and then bring them inside at night to cool off. I'm in Florida, I don't think I can grow them in the summer, but I want to start them around August to grow this fall.
I totally agree about pelleted seeds. They are meant to be easy but they always give me poor results.
Very cool! I tried growing the Clancy seeds a couple years ago, but I had a horrible time getting any of them to germinate and then actually grow.
I've started Clancy seeds 4-5 times now. They ALWAYS have bad germination rates :(

Clancy is an indeterminate potato you can keep letting it continue to grow until the plant dies back. The rough skin is scab add sulfur or pest moss to your potting mix to lower the PH

Congratulations on the germination success. I’m about ready to start a new round with these potatoes, I ate most of them but I saved some of the biggest ones to replant as seed potatoes.

from seed is really a biannual affair where you grow the tubers on the next year i think.

well I didnt buy clancy seeds but I do have potato berries in my garden this year and I have every intention of planting them come spring to see what I get. Sadly no growing year round here in minnesota. But I have some red potatoes that I bought from the store and planted not sure what variety they are but I think they are red norland with potato berries and I have Dakota Pearl with potato berries. excited to see what I get from those next fall. Interestingly the Kennebec potatoes did not set berries though they bloomed a lot, possibly sterile.
None of the seeds from these berries sprouted :(

Homemade compost and the local high-end bagged soil. This happened to be called 420 Blend, LOL
Is there a relationship between when the flowers form and when the spuds in the roots form? With normal vegetable plants the flowers become the fruit... but with root vegeetables... its a bit confusing to think about since the root can't flower.
I think so, yes. I have only noticed spuds once I see flowers forming.

Potatoes don't grow true from seed, but it's still fun to see what you get. Just don't expect massive yields.
I am not counting on a large harvest but I am super interested in what these seeds produce. I'll harvest from these seeds in the next 2 months.
@@OutdoorScienceDad I'd go for it. You might get lucky as well. Get a really amazing variety. If people stop growing from seed, we stop getting new varieties.
Turns out I am too lazy to read down in the comments to see if anyone ever answered but that looks like it might be scab on your 3rd pot unsightly but not harmful its caused by a bacteria in the soil and is usually a lot more prevalent in alkaline soils.

Yes, similar. Creamy and delicious.
Is there a difference when to harvest between TPS plants and seed potatoes? Seed potatoes, after they've grown up and finally died down and are brown colored, that's when to harvest potatoes. While you are harvesting from TPS plants from green thriving plants.
Maybe it was just my impatience, or ignorance? LOL. I think you should try to wait until the plant dies back. Seed pods from this video are sprouting now, so I really excited to see what they produce since they will be second generation from seed.

The seed packets came from 'Botanical Interest' and I bought it from my local (Oakland,CA) Ace Garden center.
i tried tps and had one plant survive but some kind of grub got in there and ate it before it formed tubers.
I've had really bad germination with them too.

@@OutdoorScienceDad i’m only a weekend and I bought the heating mat halfway in so I’m gonna give them a good chance, another week and a half and see what happens! First time growing potatoes, and I actually thought I was buying seed potatoes 🤦 but it’s pretty cool if they do germinate I can do my project of potato from Tru seed, and potato from seed potato

I bought it from my local garden shop but the seed company name is Botanical Interests. They sell it online and it is cheap right now.

What was your heat mat set to? I read before to have 60-70F for germination
It is hard set to 75-85 F range
@@OutdoorScienceDad gotcha, i ended up germinating seeds in my basement. Got a few, they're soooo sensitive it seems. Only got a few to germinate, had to end up germinating them in a wet paper towel stuffed in a bag. Hope you've had a good growing season!
potato seeds germinate best at low temperartures in the 55-65F range.
Heat mats can hinder germination unless you simulate a day/night cycle with nighttime temperatures below 60F
How long did it take those seeds to germinate?
10-14 days, if Im remembering correctly.
