Really like this video and this type of content. Hope it becomes a regular series on this channel where you travel from gym to gym and highlight them like this. It’s awesome to watch.
They'll do much more if there's an incentive obviously. This should have 10x the views it has right now.
There is so many gyms he could visit. I hope he does one on tiger muay thai

@@cheetoyeeto1232 agree with you it’s pretty pathetic that people can dance on tiktok or make videos about stupid shit on YT and get millions of views and this type of stuff is at 80k views it’s a shame but respect to the owner of this account for uploading this masterpiece
Where is usman??
I just watched Trevor explaining footwork for 10 minutes I feel ike ive already learned so much lol
Me too
The UFC has been missing out of in depth interviews and videos on MMA gyms, training, and coaches. I dunno why they haven’t started filming content like this more.
My guess is that teams aren't too keen on having too many cameras there during their training camps. Wish they would get more of this kind of content though!
Because except few nobody gives a fu*k .lol
@@richardsong8852 Yea, and it's in house people (or respected people like Will Harris) that the main gym people know and trust (and most of the footage is actual useful sparring footage, and some extra for youtube fans and gym promo). The levels to fighting is mesmerizing to watch.. The attention to detail and the fact that there is counters to counters to counters and so on - there's infinite knowledge. Developing a style that works with your physical attributes and then developing that style so deeply that your confident enough to employ it against any size or styled opponent is crazy.
Well said . The heavier and stronger you are , the less counters you have to remember. I'll say that for sure lol

Full Reptile is killing it. This was such an insight to Elevation, one I've been wanting for a while.
Not complaining at all but I can't believe this content is free and full to the brim with gold. This is how coaching looks when you do it not just correctly, but they're working harder, getting more done and it looks easier because it's pinpoint focused on what's actually going on, that's the next level.

6:50 Tony vs Gaethje was perfect example of that overhand counter on a lead step the whole time.
Whitman’s teachings exemplified!
was thinking the same thing
Justin set him up with some nice jabs that tony walked onto so he could counter that lead step with the overhand, its mad how they set shit up at that highest level
Tony hasn't been the same since the surgery and those two weight cuts before the Justin fight. His body never recovered
Now I know how Usman was able to drop burns with his jab he always caught him stepping in on his lead leg this is beautiful
This doc is amazing. This is what fight fans want. Behind the scenes training. The tips from Trevor are so eye opening. He should also be an announcer during UFC broadcasts & explain what's going on like Cruz does. Those are the best play by play/color guys.

*The entire comment section in absolute awe*
Guys a goat.
Thank you so much for this Film. I cant preach enough how much I appreciate Trevor Wittman. MMA has been a passion of mine for a little over 2 years now and I feel that I got such an advantage over most guys just buy studying his knowledge and techniques!
Too bad Usman wasnt here that much, it would be nice to hear from him a little too.
Right like why show us Usman if he's not in the fucking video
Exposing his roid induced bubble gut in the thumb nail 😂

okay we all now Wittman is a freaking genius alright, I don't have to write this down again. Instead I would like to point out how positive their atmosphere is. No hostility, no bragging, no dumb Team Alpha Male bullshit, just a common cause and hard work with positive, relaxed people. Just great. You don't build that overnight.
Lol yeah man it’s good to see, but it’s a sad realization of others gyms and how they prioritize “toughness” and the reality of it is.. it’s a business and a lot of these coaches at gyms just want it to be packed for their own financial reasons. so they influence they’re fighters to never rest/fully recover and preach listening over actually thinking... I’m on vacation and stopped in a boxing gym, I sparred a kid from Seattle today and he was eager, an confidentially claiming he knew what he was doing. Wanting to get straight to it. Tryed to teach him a few things but he was not interested claimed he had shoulder issues, meanwhile he’s like 19.. suggested stretches an he didn’t wanna hear it. terrible attitude, sad to say. I hope he actually never fights... he is going to get hurt lol #respecfully.
Love watching coach Trevor Whitman teach counters, at 4:40! He is fast! Some knowledge for that paying attention!, GOLD! "You are not countering a punch, you are countering the lead step" Trevor Whitman

I always want to see this sort of stuff and the behind the scenes footage and all that it takes to build up and grow over the years. These people live such active and dedicated life's and how could you not respect these people! I hope to see more behind the scenes footage. It was always either UFC shorts or highlight reel clips on TH-cam, so to have a short of mini documentary of behind the scenes footage is amazing!

3:59-9:25 is just absolute gold. Thank you Trevor Whitman and Full Reptile.
I got the part about timing the lead foot to counter. What did he say on countering the rear foot?
With the rear foot, he said to jab at the opponent when their rear foot is mid air and about to plant. The best way is to land the jab right before the rear leg plants and when it does plant follow up with the cross.
Trevor Wittman’s whole discussion on timing is pure gold. This kind of stuff is what separates the great from the rest.
This is some GOLD in terms of content and footage😎

Fantastic video. Good job to whoever is making these videos.
Pretty awesome video.
I feel likeI'm seeing the wizard at work behind the curtain here. Great stuff
I’ve watched this a few times, I can tell it’s high quality stuff, which probably explains why I’m struggling with it a little 😂
The part where Trevor is talking about the jab etc, is he saying, lead with your rear foot when you jab, almost spring forward?
As oppose to stepping forward with your lead leg?
And secondly, in regards to the opponents movement.
Catch them with that jab as they are moving back, and catch them with the power hand when the step forward?
Any tips appreciated 🙌
Great video, smashing it as always.
👍
I think one of the principles he was sharing was to land your punch as their foot is in the air, as they’re moving forward. Without their foot planted they’re ability to defend or evade is compromised.
Hes speaking about tempo, timing your jab or your "powerhand" in the best moment. Disrupting ur oponent when hes moving (attention is on the feet).
Same for counterpunching. Focus is on the feet.
The other people commenting above are both right, but he's showing a really important principle, so I figured maybe I'd go into it with a little bit more depth to help you out. The overall principle he's teaching is to time your attack in the middle of the opponent's step. As leanermachine said above, when their foot is in the air they are committed to shifting their weight onto the foot that's stepping, and their ability to evade, defend, or counter is compromised. Now Trevor is teaching the wrestler here (sorry I don't know his name, anybody know who he is?) to apply this in two different ways, depending on whether you are pressuring (moving forward and stepping into the opponent) or whether they are pressuring, and you are moving back and trying to draw them in.
When you are pressuring, you time your entry for when the opponent is stepping onto his rear foot, and then you come in behind the jab, or double jab, and follow with the right hand. This is the rear foot he's talking about. Not your rear foot, but rather the opponent's rear foot. This is because when his weight is on his rear foot he can't shuffle backward (since he'd have to step with his rear foot first, and that means first moving the weight onto his front foot so that he can then step with his rear foot). You time your jab for when he's stepping onto the rear foot, and as he pulls his head back from the jab (a common reaction) he's stuck in place with his weight on his back foot, and then you nail him with your right. If you watch Usman's recent knockout of Masvidal you can see this in action. Usman times his step in with his jab as Masvidal is stepping back onto his rear foot, and then follows through with his cross and knocks Masvidal out (it's a little different because Masvidal plants to throw the counter left hook, but he's slow on the trigger precisely because he's initially stuck with his weight on the back foot and needs to transfer it onto his front foot to throw his hook). Timing his rear foot as you step in is particularly important in MMA because the primary defensive movement guys are going to use when you step in to attack is to simply hop back out of range. This is the default defensive response because the threats in MMA are so varied. When an opponent steps in to punch you could slip or weave and counter, like in boxing, but the punches might be feints, and you could end up slipping or ducking into a kick or knee (see: Costa vs Adesanya or Cruz vs Cejudo). You could shell up behind a high guard and then counter, like in kickboxing, but the punches might be feints, and he could really be using them to hide his level change into a takedown, and then he's in on your hips while your hand are up on your head. Given the unique range of offensive possibilities in MMA, the best defense is often to just hop back out of range entirely. This is the reason we’ve seen the adoption of longer Karate style stances which enable quick linear movement (hopping in and hopping out) over the last few years (see: Conor McGregor), and the rise of the calf kick to counter these longer stances (the longer your stance is, the harder it is to check a kick, which is why they stand so tall in Muay Thai. See also Poirier vs McGregor 2) Timing your entry when he’s in the middle of stepping onto his rear foot makes it more difficult for him to simply hop back when you enter.
Trevor also shows how to time the step when your opponent is pressuring. Here you're trying to counter him as he steps in, so you time your counter as he’s stepping onto his lead foot, and ideally you try to throw your counter as his foot is in the air, so he's committed all his body weight to coming forward. Trevor says the overhand is best here (watch Gaethje vs Ferguson to see this over and over), but the guy with the beard (sorry don’t know his name either) shows that you can also use your jab to catch him as he’s stepping in. Trevor show how you can’t just move back incrementally, loaded up and ready to counter, or the opponent will be wary, and won’t be drawn in. Instead you have to use big steps, moving back, circling around, and generally being noncommittal, so that the opponent gets the feeling you’re taking a break, and gets hungry and steps in, and then wham! you time him with the unexpected counter shot (Rizin champ Kyoji Horiguchi is excellent at this, watch his fights to see this footwork in action).
Finally Trevor show how to take an angle when the opponent sets his feet to fire back. Here you’re moving forward, pressuring the guy back, and maybe he’s feeling a little too close to the fence, or he’s just sick of moving backwards, so he sets his feet to exchange with you, hoping to hit you with a big counter shot as you step in and force you to back off with the pressure. When he sets his feet you sidestep (either to the outside, or cross step to the inside) and take an angle, and then step in on the new angle and attack. Because he has set his feet to throw he’ll be slow to readjust to your new angle, and you can catch him out of position. Trevor says because of this if you’re the one getting pressured back to the fence it might be better to simply feint an attack, and use the opponent’s pause to circle out and back into the center of the ring, rather than setting your feet and looking to stand and bang.
Finally, if you want to understand Trevor’s footwork on an even deeper level, you should get his excellent “Footwork Blueprint” instructional from Dynamic Striking (the BJJ Fanatics sister site for striking). It really elevated my game!

Thank you so much for this response.
Honestly, the time you have taken, the detail you have gone into, with the references etc, you’ve really gone above and beyond!
Thank you.
I’ve read through it once, and not only have you gave me a much better understanding of what I’m seeing in the video.
I already have seen a potential fix for a glaring problem I’m having checking low kicks to my lead leg.
I’m going to read it a few more times and put into practice this week 👌
It makes perfect sense now, I’ve also subscribed to your channel!
Awesome work mate, be lucky 🙌
@@mallorcahermano1477 Awwww thanks! As I was writing it just kept getting longer, and I was hoping you'd appreciate what turned out to be a mini-essay! If your training partners aren't good wrestlers then simply shortening up your stance, and pointing your lead foot slightly out, towards his rear leg (assuming you're both orthodox) will make checking outside leg kicks a lot easier (if you're competing do watch out for side/oblique kicks to the front knee, since you'll need to bend your knee and take the kick straight on to prevent him from hyper-extending your knee, but those are typically frowned upon in sparring). However standing taller does mean that it takes longer to sprawl/whizzer/punch your underhook versus the takedown, so be wary if a guy's got a good double leg. There's kind of a rock/paper/scissors relationship. Standing in a long bladed stance makes jabbing and stuffing takedowns easier, but exposes you to the calf kick. Standing taller makes checking kicks easier, but your sprawl is slower, and it's harder to get your jab going (linear movement in general is slower). So you have to adapt your stance to counter your opponents strengths, which is something that's relatively unique to MMA. On the flip side if you've got a good double leg and a good calf kick you can give guys fits because you have a good counter to either style of stance. Add in a good jab/cross to pressure with, in case he wants to move back and play the matador, and you've got a solid stand up game, at least until you have to deal with a southpaw (watch GSP for a guy who worked really well off his jab on the front foot and then would use his double leg to counter when the opponent tried to step into him). Thanks for subscribing! Right now it's all just stuff we put up for our kids classes during quarantine, but we'll be adding some new stuff soon! Keep training and be lucky!
