- Nvidia (NVDA) has had a bumpy ride over the past month as the tech sector is just beginning to recover from the wide sell-offs seen at the beginning of August. With the chipmaker's next earnings report around the corner - Wednesday, August 28 - could Nvidia be the leader for another tech rally?
Niles Investment Management founder and portfolio manager Dan Niles joins Catalysts to give insight into Nvidia's upcoming earnings and what investors need to know about the company and the sector moving forward.
Niles believes that while the "quarter itself" could be "messy" for Nvidia, he still feels bullish on the stock long-term. But he's still not a buyer at these current levels:
"Going into this earnings season, we said we thought there would be an issue during earnings with the Magnificent Seven, and that you'd have to start rationalizing AI spend because you weren't generating the revenues you needed. And so for us, if you look at the six Magnificent Seven stocks that have reported so far, they've been down on average 4% the day after earnings."

Anyone one one superficially comparing Nvidia today to Cisco in 2000 is an idiot.
Not only was the technology curve that we were on, then completely different from the one we're on today... But the total addressable market that laid ahead for Cisco in 2000 was much much riskier and smaller than the total addressable market that exists today for GPU accelerators in general and Nvidia specifically.
Here's some key fundamental differences:
In 2000 broadband penetration was just getting started, The belief was wide-ranging that Cisco and other networking providers like jdsu would have an endless market for providing switches and routers to a growing web Enterprise market... In theory this makes sense, but upon analysis it became pretty clear that the total addressable market was saturated further technological solutions for virtually increasing bandwidth across inter and intranetworks were on the ascent... One technology in particular being dwdm switches... These allowed multiple wavelengths of light to be packed down a single fiber line eliminating the need for significant branching And routing once packets egressed from an Enterprise Network... This significantly reduced the theoretical market demand for Enterprise routers... In addition to this physical bandwidth multiplication virtual allocation of IP addresses using classless interdomain routing (CIDR) reduce the theoretical max requirement for switches inside a given IP domain.
In addition, the landscape of web-based companies that had emerged to take advantage of the new graphical web or highly capitalized based on the hopes and dreams of venture capitalists
The vast majority of these companies did not have revenue let alone profit yet they were given buckets of money... They were not proven businesses and their ability to keep the lights on or expand so as to be able to buy additional networking equipment as their bandwidth needs increased. Fast forward to 2024, gpu acceleration is in a completely different situation. Gpu accelerators allow the parallelization of existing compute loads which are sequentially processed. By converting compute loads from sequential to parallel clouds can be re-architected to provide A paralyzed fabric of heterogeneous nodes for performing compute and inferencing.
Generative AI further in its ability to enable a building of agentic systems stands to completely replace all existing heuristic code bases by semantic and linguistic AI systems with agent agent interactions being mediated by language interfaces.
The early adopters of these technologies are seeing significant productivity improvements over the old heuristic applications. Moreover, the development process is significantly streamlined... We're making feature additions to a heuristically coded application in the Enterprise. Could take weeks to months using an agentic generative AI trained team. Further, because there is a lower demand on expertise in coding, business, employees can leverage these technologies language interfaces to affect a significant percentage of the work that otherwise would have been done by developers using heuristic code bases at considerable cost and time spent
Taken together the uniqueness of parallel compute coupled with the advantages of converting sequentially heuristic code bases into generative AI agentic applications creates a positive vector towards continuous change in the current Enterprise towards agentic systems.
Finally, because the compute requirements of these applications comes down to deploying models for the purpose of leveraging inferencing compute. As client success is met, utilization in the cloud will continuously increase in direct relation to the increase productivity and utility extracted from these new types of applications by the enterprises, users and clients.
Finally, practical artificial intelligence applications are only just being emerged as various verticals are having their data sets characterized by neural models. Nvidia shows this clearly in the range of models that they have developed for dozens of industries from computational lithography, To AI game agents, To robot world models, To medical imaging models.... We're just at the beginning of deploying these incredibly revolutionary systems into the existing healthcare, gaming, semiconductor, Robotics... And other spaces.
Also, it's important to note that of the major cloud providers, every single one of their top leadership has stated that they would rather overspend on accelerator compute then be caught behind. This is a very wise position given what I just described with regards to how generative, AI and agentic applications are going to eat the world of heuristic handwritten human code.
This earnings report for Nvidia will be the dam4n break moment. We spent the last two quarters or so essentially having the market in suspended disbelief as to whether or not the rally in Nvidia shares made any sense but the significance of the increase in revenue and profit in this particular quarter, coupled with a significant increase in service revenue from inferencing services is going to smack Wall Street into attention and have them flooding back into the stock which is at a dirt cheap steel level as far as I'm concerned.
We are still at the bottom loop of the s curve on the adoption path for generative AI.
“Might go down after earnings” what a joke
Why is this a joke? A company can have an earnings beat and the price STILL FALLS, because expectations were unrealistically high. This could very be the case with NVDA. Conversely, a company can have an earnings miss, but the share price goes UP, because investors were expecting worse.

AI stocks will dominate 2025. Why I prefer NVIDIA is that they are better placed to maintain long term growth potential, and provide a platform for other AI companies. I know someone who has made more than 200% from NVIDIA. I'll also take these other recommendations you made.
