Maybe. Or just a quick thinker. Kind of makes sense that someone well rounded and witty enough could do that. I mean it was like a quick step one of a real quick process of elimination. A meal-time diagnosis performed of future goons-to-be. A successful one at that.
      And whattayaknow? Got lucky?
Maybe. That's irrelevant. Either way, bravo goon, bravo!
But it was a real great catch in a real great scene. Personally, with a hot head like ol' Alphonse there, I am not really sure I would have wanted to have been the person to point out to Al that his son was deaf and probably would not want to be the one to know, especially the first and possibly ONLY one to know.
Back then death wasn't a rarity. Life was not as abundant and lenghty as it is in these here modern times. And men of Capone's caliber would have killed for far less. In fear of Al's sick mind coercing himself to think that others would soon find out that his son is indeed deaf. I would assume he would at least think about wacking the dude that not just knew about it, but was the one to bring the issue to his attention. No telling how Al would have shown his gratitude, friend or foe, feel me?
Anything could have been made to look like a damn handicap back then. Many families at that time were known to put handicap children who suffered from various disabilities from slightly mild to the most severe, and lock them away in some near, dear, good home, also known as an insane asylum. Lobotomy anyone? No? You will feel better, trust us. Doctors and redheaded orderlies with one-eyed patches would never lie.
Okay my bad. Got carried away.
But yeah, God forbid members of the higher echelon of society were to find out that so and so had a son who was a little off or had a third eye. Oh boy, that was terrible for good ol' proper white folk that were too good to be around a coughing child, now one with down syndrome? Never. That shit was viewed as a curse to some.
Not saying Al had that same thinking. But given that their entire life revolved around attaining money, power, and respect, they may somehow adapt that way of thinking if they were to spend enough time around such folks.
"That boy is slow? That's it!!
"We must stop all dealings with him at once, immediately. We look weak I tell you. WEAK got dammit."
All about perception back then. Sick fuxxers......

Parents can get caught up with their own stuff and not realize what's going on with their kids, .. my best friend, when we first met, I was baby sitting her 6yr old daughter, and noticed she didn't respond to my normal voice, and my daughters would just pull her along, or repeat what I said. She was skates saying huh, huh auntie.... I stood behind her talking in normal and escalating tones till she responded 😢 .... when her mother came to pick her up, she's a Texan with a loud voice, it still took her mom getting louder before she would respond ... I showed her the same thing I did earlier 😢 my friend looked at me and started crying, realizing she was screaming at her baby and her baby couldn't hear her .... took her to the Dr the next day (military Dr, back then we could get immediate appointments) ... her daughter had a degenerative nerve "issue" was almost completely deaf in one ear, and going deaf in the other ... her mom was a single parent in the army and taking night courses, she was so busy she missed the clues because they were gradual

Sometimes you need an opinion from outside the box. People really forget this was 1920-1930's. The mental deficiency was probably diagnosed by a good doctor. Jimmy is a ww1 survivor. He has seen all kinds of injury/disability. Being blind or deaf was extremely common in ww1 because of mustard gas. Jimmy figured it out quick only because of that (he spent 8 months in hospital from a german frag). Capone was too busy building an empire and was never wounded in the war.

Capone treated his son like royalty after that. Probably had to do with the guilt of treating your disabled son like he’s some kind of dumbass.
Edit: everyone seems to be misunderstanding my comment. I am not calling his son a dumbass, I am saying that all Capone was acting ignorantly because he was genuinely unaware of his son’s disability and treated him lesser for it, but once he realized what he was doing and the extent of the situation, he changed his behavior for the better. As I said to someone in the comments, “I’m literally referencing what happened in the show. I’m not being ‘ignorant’ or making some sort of insensitive statement at all. Capone had a deaf son, he didn’t know he was deaf, but when he and his wife found out he was deaf, they did everything in their power to provide all the specialized education and support needed for a child with that issue. They were good parents and supported their son.” I’m genuinely shocked I have to break this down but some people need an explanation.

  • @realpimpson9774
    @realpimpson9774 ปีที่แล้ว +3758

After this he treated his son different. In the show two of the most touching and beautiful scenes come from Capone and his son. Capone is worried about his son being too soft. He goes up to his son and is yelling at him to put his hands up! ( like when fighting ) Capone has his hands up in a fighting gesture covering his face and his son reads his lips or just understands to put his hands up bc his dad is doing so but he lifts his hands in a different way just normally lifts his hands. Capone fixes his hands in a fighting position and grabs his head and just looks at him. His son is crying then Capone breaks down and hugs his son and cries with him. It’s years later Capone has a court date. He walks up to his sons room to tell him to listen and take care of his mother. He explains to his son that he did a lot of bad things and he has to pay for his crimes. He lets his son know that all he did was so that his son and his mother could live a better life. Capone gets off the bed to walk away. Capone’s son talks! He says “Dad .. dad..!” Yes he is yelling and he sounds like how some deaf people sound. Capone turns around with tears in his eyes and his son puts up his hands in the fighting position! Letting his dad know to stay strong! I loved those scenes

And then ofc he got over it, & started just supporting him in any way he could, but I'll always remember how his blood ran cold at first.

I don't know why this thread has turned into a battle between who's more honorable: politicians or gangsters.
Both are corrupt, but this is a show about a gangster so I'm gonna respond on topic.
Capone was human, like everyone else. Some monsters absolutely were psychopaths, who enjoyed murder and felt no empathy. I believe Al Capone was hardened, but not a psychopath.
However, calling him a "hero", simply because he was a good father, is stretching it. Even moreso after you realize that he only became said good father AFTER learning that his son's condition was medical, and not psychological.

@@Jimmymatthewb I was referring more to the common people he helped, not just his family. Like at the soup kitchens, and the businesses he saved from bankruptcy, as well as keeping lowly gangs and drugs out of Chicago.
Irl, he actually always cared very much about his children since they were born. He provided them with everything he could, and there's even a voice recording of him where he says he loves his family.

Same thing happened to me last summer at my aunt's house when i said "that cat is deaf" and the faces of realization were priceless.

Sonny Capone even being deaf in one ear outlived his evil father by quite a few years so, I would say Sonny was very successful in this life.

Stephens' Capone is one of my all-time favorite characters.

At least he couldn't hear the insults, although little ones can feel the energy more than anybody.
