    It always makes me chuckle when people trying to make a case for the existence of libertarian free will say things like "rationality requires that we can consider all the options, and freely choose the best one".
    That's the thing -- you can ONLY choose the one that's the best for you in the exact situation you're in. To do anything else would be irrational. Which means either people can choose to be irrational (which goes against his whole point), or they can ONLY be rational (which means there is no actual free will being exercised).

    The quick transition scene just after 7:42 is greatly appreciated!
    At 10:35 or so, Stephen talks about mutations being at the core of natural selection. I'd quibble that he really should have said "variation." Natural selection can push a population towards some more favorable configuration extremely quickly, much faster than mutations would allow, by exploiting pre-existing variations within the starting population. (This is especially true for complex creatures; for viruses and bacteria, mutations are indeed a first order driver). Mutations certainly are important to evolution for complex species too, but only in the much longer time horizon that, say, than the time scale that produced Darwin's finches.
    This can be seen in selective breeding. One can quickly drive a population of plants or animals towards some desired outcome, but it will quickly plateau. The way out of it is to introduce "fresh blood" outside of that inbreed gene pool to mix things up and then selectively breed them again, hoping to push out the boundary a bit before hitting a plateau again.

    9:11 this might be too simple for some people but I view loss of a loved one or close person as "they're no longer suffering so I must accept this loss and move on."
    This has applied to family dying from cancer, those in my squad being killed, illness, suicide (intentional and unintentional), and loss of fur family. Anything else seems just self induced suffering. While I can both empathize and sympathize with those thoughts and emotions, I find it more productive on focusing on accepting the loss and that there's nothing I can do about it. Experience the emotions, learn from it, and move on. No multiple page book necessary.

    Saying "evolution is random" is like saying a coin sorter is random, and the pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters all just happen to get sorted out randomly. Natural Selection is a filter.

    • @RiiDii
      @RiiDii 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding the "spilled milk" (bad) analogy: Natural selection repeats the filtering process until some mass on the planet happens to be intelligent. The "intelligent" mass (humans) on Earth is roughly 0.00000008% of Earth's total mass. Intelligence is rare, but eventually, natural selection will arrive at intelligence. The milk has neither sufficient mass or time to achieve intelligence.

And then he still doesn't let all sinners into heaven!

      Rube Goldberg indeed, but with the caveat that at least Goldberg's designs and creations WORKED, unlike so often with the god of the bible. It is rather interesting that the god of the bible, when faced with problems (a maximally powerful diety having issues with its own creation is strange in and of itself and doesn't speak particularly well to its supposed design and creation prowess), rather than just fix them with its purported immense power and wisdom, instead comes up with these complex, convoluted schemes which usually don't address the problem or end in utter failure.

They have never been able to provide a reasonable argument for the existence of a god, so it's always some combination of strawman arguments, red herrings, shifting the burden of proof, etc. When it comes to the evolution red herring, which is exactly what it is, I just pull the rug out from under them. "Okay Evolutionary theory is wrong. Now, make an argument for a god." *crickets* Truth is: If they applied the same critical thinking skills to their own world view as they do Evolution, they'd be atheists.

      The exhausting repetition is part of the strategy. Tire out the people fighting back, make them give up, so you can cram bullshit into law and schools and everything else unchecked.
      Which is why we _CAN'T_ stop fighting these bastards. They need sane people to give up, because they can't win otherwise. It's hard to keep at it for us because _we care_ about the truth and they don't. It's easy to lie constantly and they get amusement from out frustration.

      I did agree the RR's original video was in poor taste. But when they went after Rachel Oates accusing her of being a transphobe just because of association, it was clear people weren't in it for genuine criticism. Jimmy Snow released a 4 video series about it, which sums up how I felt too.

      Seemed like a case of having a thought, making a video, and then later doing some research. He got the order mixed up.
      Of course he corrected himself when shown better evidence. That's what rational people do. Who is reading this that would continue to deny a god's existence if you were given valid evidence at least one does exist? I doubt any. Compare that to theists who maintain their beliefs no matter how much contradicting evidence is presented to them. Practically the definition of Delusional: maintaining false beliefs in spite of contradicting evidence.

      @@Julian0101 What do you mean "everyone didn't understand"? If EVERYONE ELSE didn't understand him, then he didn't EXPLAIN HIMSELF properly.
      However, RR's "argument", you can't actually CALL it an argument, was "trans women athletes have more testosterone than women in general have", but cis ATHLETE women have more testosterone than women in general have. Something "rationality rules" should keep his yap shut until he HAS evidence that there is a problem. But he had a conclusion he WANTED to be true, and like Lisle here, made connections to make him "right", whether reality agreed or not.

    1:52 Yeah. The apologist often shoots for a "win by default" approach. The best framming up of the issue is not Evolution vs Creation. It is Neo Darwinian Evolution true or false. Despite creation. The best work I've read on this does not even go to ultimate conclusions that are true or false. It is Darwin on Trial by Phillip Johnson. An evaluation of the philosophical underpinning of Neo Darwinian Evolutionary Theory.

    If the ability to reason comes from god and not from the processes within our brains then why when the brain is damaged it can effect our ability to reason. If reason comes from god instead of our brains processing the world around us and our experiences in it, then why can adults, generally speaking, reason better than children?

    My counter to "God made your brain" is, since the 10 commandments prove God, if believed, is arrogant and obsessive, then if he created our brain, he would have installed an automatic belief in him. Which he actually did in Adam & Eve. If the serpent didn't convince Eve, the two would have continued being the robotic, obedient slaves, but the knowledge showed them the truth, and the "truth will set you free".

    Great stuff guys, I really appreciate the approach you're taking to this discussion, as I think pointing out, in a straightforward way, the obvious question begging that goes on from apologists is great. However, Stephen, I think you're missing the forest for the trees in your response to him saying that the human brain is simply an accident. I don't believe that by saying that he's making an assessment of the particular facets of evolution, but instead he's commenting on the nature of human existence. I think what he's saying is if we are evolved beings in a material-only universe, by whatever means that evolution may occur, then it means that the fact that we exist and the fact that the universe exists in such a way that evolution is possible is serendipitous.

    I’m bewildered by his attitude as if he had already proven that we were made in God’s image before mentioning that it says this in the Bible, as if that wasn’t the source for his claim. That wasn’t a circular argument, it was just the first step of his argument stated backwards and he never made an argument.
    I’m also bewildered as to how he imagines that everyone was born with the ability to think rationally when most people are irrational and only respond to the chemical emotions in their brains; which, in fact, is what he’s relying on by gaslighting people into scoffing at evolution. If all people are rational then the law of gravity would have been discovered much sooner.

    Thank you Dr. Lisle, you gave ample evidence that your religion has stopped you from using reason and evidence. And never gave any verifiable evidence that supports your assertions. Indeed verifiable evidence shows that the Earth is old, the universe older, life evolves and there was no Great Flood. Thus disproving the god of Genesis. Thus you do not have the word of a god.

    Does this mean that "reason" provides a dis-advantage within -religion- creationism?

    • @markhackett2302
      @markhackett2302 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It takes a disadvantage for religions, all of them. If you use reason, you won't adhere to dogma, and therefore you become "religious in name only" or even "atheist", because reason would lead you there and only dogma would keep you in the fold of a religion. This is true even for religions that supposedly revere rationality. See Jesuits.
