Honestly, I love this dynamic. The whole abusive!Nightmare thing doesnt sit right with me honestly, but then again, im an apologist for him. But to tell the truth, ironically, I feel like Nightmare is teaching Crescent how to deal with it the same way he had to growing up. But instead of snapping and going through the trauma Nightmare had to, hes trying to teach Crescent to fight back. Showing weakness only puts a target of bullies on your back, if you dont cry, they wont know your weak. If you arent weak, then youll survive the rough treatment that the world gives out. This is just something Nightmare was forced to learn because of his backstory, afterall, he was hated purely for the reason of guarding the negative apples. He was weak, he cried, and he paid for it in the most painful of ways. Not only did he lose his brother, became his brothers enemy, he killed his mother. The trauma had to have an effect on him, had to make him realize that weakness will only get you killed. Yet, that isnt entirely true, you can be strong and cry. I love that Crescent didnt abandon Nightmare and tried to genuinely teach his father that boys can cry, because crying isnt a sign of weakness. But rather, a knowledge of your emotions, you arent weak, your strong. Because it takes strength to admit to yourself that its okay to cry. No matter what others say, you can cry, because every tear you shed, only makes you stronger. More resilient, its okay to cry. I love the message here, its so beautiful.
