As an artist and designer myself, please don't interpret KAWS' story as common. It's VERY difficult to do what he does without a financial boost, like a random millionaire that was at the right place and time to see ONE (ok, let's say 3) piece that makes them fall in love and want everything you do from then on. Making those designer figures isn't cheap and usually you would want to guarantee they're all sold before you even put a manufacturing order in. I say, keep on doing what you love, just keep your feet on the ground.
Kaws used to work for Walt Disney I’m surprised he got around any kind of copyright infringement! He probably the most successful Graff artist in history commercially. I saw a documentary about him n watched his climb up the success ladder. I do remember seeing his pieces in the 90’s on freight trains ,billboards n other spots n knew a couple people from his crew in L.A. ,I’m a “Graffwriter” too! And also I watched his rise in the designer toy industry as he became more n more popular. I walked into a store in Chicago in the mall a friend of mine owns n asked how much was the Kaws figure he told me a thousand dollars I was floored!!! Then when watching a lil interview with Alicia keys n Swiss beats on their home they showed at 12-14 foot tall sculpture piece by Kaws in their home!!! I wonder how much of a percentage does he get from each of his pieces sold? His marketing strategies n execution was in point this dude came up!!!
Appreciate you dropping by from Cam's channel! We've got a bunch of stories lined up about some incredible folks. Really glad you're finding it interesting hope it keeps you coming back for more.
Gonna start investing in KAWS soon, fell in love with his work when I first started getting into fashion and art at 16 and always looked at the pieces but now I can afford to get drops (if I’m lucky) 😂
In what world? Apparently this one, Banksy did all that too except for toys, I will say Banksy probably heard about Kaws and was no doubt influenced in some way.
Something I don't understand is what about copyrights? I mean he's practically using other peoples ideas and changing it a small amount. Couldn't he get in trouble for that?
Great question! It’s a fine line KAWS walks, blending inspiration with his unique twist. It’s all about transformation and interpretation in art, which can sometimes skate close to legal boundaries but often remains within the realm of artistic expression and homage. Overall I was talking about the brand he created more so than his art. That's what I focus more on for the channel.
Went a to a *Kaws* exhibit in a art museum 🖼️ in Toronto. His stuff is actually pretty interestin. Between Him *🕊️Virgil🕊️* and Murakami this is probably the closest comparison to a Andy Warhol or a Norman Roccwell we gonna get.
It wasn't Barry McGee that gave him the "key", it was REVS. And the photos you chose for the 1990s graffiti were not from then, but earlier. But anyway, great overall!

LOVE YOUR COMMENT!1
Everything from Taylor Swift to Campbell's soup has some element of right place right time or "luck" involved.

Appetites for novelty are satiated by plastic figurines. I find them nostalgic, and I also like sneakers. The trash pile grows.
Comment of the week 💯
The 90's photos are from the late 70's - ealry 80's... IJS @1:48
I remember getting my first "real" paycheck back in the day and buying a KAWS Lazzarini Vinyl Figure.

you need to work on your speaking its hard to understand
I don't really see much originality in this stuff, it's just effectively one sticker of a plushy looking skull stamped on ads.
