1994 is an epic year for Music. Peral Jam's Vitalogy, Soundgarden's Superunknown, NIN's Downward Spiral, Alice In Chains - Jar of Flies, Beck - Mellow Gold, Beastie Boys - Ill Communication to name a few. An absolutely unprecedented year of album drops.
Any chance you react to Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop? its probably their most original album, great diversity and underrated gems there.
Flies in the Vasoline comes from when Scott was a kid…he heard The Eagles “Life in the Fast Lane” and thought they were saying “flies in the Vasoline “, and not Life in the fast lane, lol
Oh yeah btw the reason why you hear Chester Bennington in this is because Chester was a HUGE STP fan, so much so he even became STP's lead of a while. I believe it was back in 2014 or 15
I bought this album when it came out when I was 16. It was bought with my first paycheck and played it over and over again. It’s been a while since I’ve heard this album. Thanks! This is a timeless album. They don’t make music like this anymore. Great reaction! That’s crazy you said the big empty was the reason people bought this album. That was the case for me. It’s a great tune! The chorus is very powerful
Seriously, I subscribed to you yesterday because you reviewed STP! Now I watch you listening to another one of their albums?! It brings back memories of when I first heard and fell in love with STP.
I have loved STP since their first album and I still listen to (and enjoy) them quite often. Thanx for a superb listenthrough of the "Purple" album - that sure made me hit the subscribe button !
I recommend listening to their third album, Tiny Music. It has a different style that really defines them. It’s probably one of the best rock albums in the 90s.
Watching you react to “Still Remains” gave me life. I’ve never met anyone who appreciates the song for what it is… the fact that you said it was your favorite after it was done means the impact of its beauty really hit you. I’ve been listening to this record since I was in middle school a couple years after it was released. 30 years of this being one of the best songs I’ve ever heard and it’s sooo fun seeing someone hear it for the first time. Thanks for sharing with us. I saw them in concert when I was in middle school and fell in love with Scott Weiland after seeing him live… and now this summer I get to see STP perform (rip Scott - he was a rock god). I’m still mourning his death and cannot wait to hear these songs that were the soundtrack to my life live again.
Me as a teenager in the early 90's - "I have no clue what the lyrics are about, but I sure do feel this song." This CD is one of the all time greats!!!
@@downtowncharlevoix yes but back in the day they caught a lot of flak for being clones of other bands, and were generally underappreciated BTW I disagreed then and now. Always loved STP
Superman Silver Gun is one of my favorite all time songs. Such a heavy pump instrumentally and I love that over that over the same guitar Scott has a two part vocal verse or verse/bridge
I discovered the Pilots in late 1992 around the time "Core" came out. I loved the record, and while you could point to similarities evidenced on a few songs, it bummed me out seeing the kind of flak the band took back then from some people quick to dismiss them as Seattle grunge knock-offs. Though a few of the seminal, breakout records by Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice did shortly predate the release of "Core", the Pilots had been a working band four or five years already. The criticism was overblown. To me "Core" was a strong statement, an album that endured, and was rich with suggestion of the brilliance we could expect in future albums (as they would come more into their own). I remember those critical voices being silenced after "Purple" dropped in 1994. Another excellent record, and for those who hadn't yet appreciated it, "Purple" demonstrated that Stone Temple Pilots weren't simply aping the sound of other bands - but were stepping into their own identity, taking more risks, showing a better understanding of what is uniquely them. By the time "Tiny Music..." music came along (1996), despite personal challenges Scott Weiland was wrestling with, there was a brimming confidence and swagger to the album, a fearless embracing of 'pop' sensibilities in the writing & recording of many songs, and loaded with amazing hooks, big choruses and memorable harmonies (the kinds you're constantly humming having stuck to your brain). The fraternal and creative bond between the DeLeo brothers adds something tangible, but not easy to describe, to the songs they write. Of course there are several more albums after "Tiny Music..." (equally worth one's time like the first three) but I've probably spouted-off long enough.
Robert De Leo, the bassist and major songwriter is a very sophisticated musician -- if you dig into the details of the riffs and melodic/harmonic content you can see it. The Beato interview with Robert De Leo is worth it 100%. I'm a new subscriber, love your vibe, keep it going!
I was always hoping someone would react to Blind Melon "Nico". It was released after Shannon Hoon overdosed. I grew up during this time period. I didn't cry when Kurt Cobain died. I didn't cry when Layne Staley died. But, I cried my ass off in my 1977 Monte Carlo when Shannon Hoon died. Such a beautiful voice/soul.
I was 15 at this time, loved Green Day Dookie, Offspring Smash, Stone Temple Pilots Purple. Went to Lollapaloosa that year. I learned guitar to all this shit haha
Was a pleasure to watch you discover this album! This one was big for me growing up. The music is so satisfying and they have great range, both between songs and albums.
FYI, the "2 voices" he was talking about at 6:16, Robert Deleo (bassist) is the backing vocal of Scott Weiland (singer). Look up videos of STP's live shows.
He sang it live, but he only recorded backing vocals in studio on Core, No. 4 and Shangri La Dee-Da, and Scott recorded them on tiny music and purple, but he always sang Scott’s parts live
Such a great album. This and “Core” were my favorites in high school. On the deluxe version of purple there is a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “dancing days” from their houses of the holy album.
In a January 1994 Rolling Stone poll, the band was simultaneously voted Best New Band by Rolling Stone's readers and Worst New Band by the magazine's music critics.
Also react to lounge fly live [ alive from the Windy City ] This performance is from 2010 and Scott was past his prime and far into his addiction but this is still one of the best live performances of this song.
The Big Empty story is not quite right. The Crow soundtrack was released in March of ‘94, and Big Empty was included on Purple that summer. Vaseline was the first single. i was there😅
My second album is actually not their song! It was a lounge song by Richard Peterson, a struggling street musician, STP loved the song, so they put it on their record and payed him 15.000 USD to help him out. This is so wholesome!
You talk about learning the guitar riff, I see you have a bass back there, try learning the bass to Interstate Love Song, one of the most fun basslines to play, it's the song that made me want to learn bass.
I wish I could give this more than 1 like. This took me back 30 years to when I heard this album for the first time. This was the soundtrack to my teenage years and will always be considered a perfect album to me.
just saw this bro, great review and reaction. STP is one of the best from the 90s. I hope you do Tiny music from the vatican, my fave album of theirs and I think their best.
This is the album that got me into rock, back when it was released. Also, for the longest time I thought it was called "12 Gracious Melodies" because that's all you could read on the CD, which I still have. There was not a single mention to "Purple"! Also, there was no internet...
There are acoustic versions of Interstate Love Song that are absolutely fantastic. Gotta check them out. Their first 3 albums absolutely slap. 4 is pretty good as well. Shangi-la-da was decent w a handful of great songs.
I believe that most of the song lyrics on Purple are about Scott Weiland trying to get sober Vs. his experiences with drug addiction, and how his addiction was negatively impacting his relationships (romantic and professional).
I'm glad people of new generations are finding this stuff. Music needs a kick in the ass. Kitchenware wasn't the hidden track, it's after that, but I'm about to find out if you catch that or not 😂 You should check out some of my music, sometime. I started playing in 92. There's a playlist of my old bands on my channel. Unfortunately, I don't have any of my new stuff recorded.
Always loved the ending to Vaseline. Pretty sure that end note is from a Beatles song, but I can’t remember which one. There’s some Secret Agent Man vibe in there too.
Stone Temple Pilot's Purple is more like Soundgarden's Superunknow and Smashing Pumpkin's Mellon Collie and the Infinate Sadness than Green Day's Dookie. All came out in 1994. Superunknown and Mellon Collie are the true alternate masterpieces in '94. They blew Dookie out of the water and Dookie is a great album. I know Smashing Pumkins won some Grammys for Mellon Collie, and I think Soundgarden would have won some for Superunknown a well.
A lot of the guitar voicings are actually pretty inteicate. A lot of jazzy and bluesey stuff played in a 90s rock way. Interstate is built off of a bossanova riff. But you almost don't catch it until you know.
I don't mean this to be flippant, but maybe I do. Anytime I'm not sure what Scott's words mean, I assume he's talking about heroin and everyone he lied to about quitting, and them having the unmitigated audacity to be mad at him for being mad at them when they call him out.
Yeah a fair warning for your entire Weiland-era STP journey, the bright sounding music usually acted as an offset to strange lyrics that were often about some pretty dark and/or heavy shit. It can be highly deceptive.
I grew up swimming in a mountain of diamonds.
Scott always wrote his own lyrics. The guy was a poet. His lyrics were always really deep. The man wrote books on the side.
Any chance you react to Tiny Music... Songs from the Vatican Gift Shop? its probably their most original album, great diversity and underrated gems there.
One of my favorite albums of all time. RIP Scott.
Same
I like this one. Lounge Fly is my favorite here.
Yes, Interstate Love Song was the big radio and MTV hit from this album.
Interstate, Big Empty and Vasoline were all played ad nauseam on radio and MTV
This album is practically perfect in every way. Amazing stuff. Weiland was such a fantastic front man. RIP.
Yes. Such a catchy and satisfying riff. The whole song is such ear candy.
Flies in the Vasoline comes from when Scott was a kid…he heard The Eagles “Life in the Fast Lane” and thought they were saying “flies in the Vasoline “, and not Life in the fast lane, lol
I remember now that I had this Album! Knowing EVERY SONG brought me back! I wore this CD out! What an Awesome Time the 90s were..

Back in '94, finding the secret track was awesome and funny.
Big Empty has to be one of the top 10 songs of this entire era. So well written, composed, and arranged. That song is immaculate.
I recommend listening to their third album, Tiny Music. It has a different style that really defines them. It’s probably one of the best rock albums in the 90s.

Me as a teenager in the early 90's - "I have no clue what the lyrics are about, but I sure do feel this song." This CD is one of the all time greats!!!
Saw these guys multiple times in the 90s. Definitely an underrated band.
Underrated? I feel like they had massive success!!
@@downtowncharlevoix yes but back in the day they caught a lot of flak for being clones of other bands, and were generally underappreciated
BTW I disagreed then and now. Always loved STP
Just consider they have 0 shot at the Rock Hall.
Their stuff was as good as anything else of the era.
Bro i have just discovered your channel and i love how fast you get the song's feelings and their meanings, continue like this🤘
'Army Ants' is my fave. Me being a drummer, one of the best songs for a drummer by STP.
Every song is classic. The production by Brendan O' Brien is amazing and elevates the songs even more.
He ruined Ten. Y PJ…the original is is superior
One of my favorite albums of all time, thanks for reacting to it!!!!!

Army Ants is a masterpiece 1:22:31
I used to stay with my mom in the summer at the time this came out and she had Mtv. I remember they played the VASOLINE video about a billion times.
I was always hoping someone would react to Blind Melon "Nico". It was released after Shannon Hoon overdosed.

The whole story behind the hidden track is a rabbit hole in itself. One worth diving into. You should watch the documentary about it! Awesome stuff

People should be reviewing the album version of Big Empty instead of the unplugged. So good.
There is a strong element of psychedelia that runs through the album, and alot of STP's music.
Not sure if you covered this, but Chester did end up singing for Stone Temple Pilots, and said they were a huge influence on him, so you are right.
Gotta check out the sit down Rick Beato does with Robert Deleo.
Epic.
Dude is such a talent.
Let's call this album what it must be called... a MASTERPIECE. You should totally try Shangri-LA DEE DA. Great album too.
still remains and army ants....and the secret track
VELVET REVOLVER is two masterpiece albums
Dean Deleo... Amazing!
Unglued was also played a lot on the radio, at least here in Toronto.
A lot of the guitar voicings are actually pretty inteicate.
A lot of jazzy and bluesey stuff played in a 90s rock way.
Interstate is built off of a bossanova riff.
But you almost don't catch it until you know.
You need to do the rest of the songs on Core!!!!!!!!
Vaseline was the lead single and video, for obvious reasons. Short to the point; one of the best songs of the decade.
I don't mean this to be flippant, but maybe I do. Anytime I'm not sure what Scott's words mean, I assume he's talking about heroin and everyone he lied to about quitting, and them having the unmitigated audacity to be mad at him for being mad at them when they call him out.

I don't have the last album, but all their albums don't have filler music. They all have unique qualities.
Vasoline = Mescaline 🔥
The phrase "you sold me down the river" means you betrayed me.
You're right about Interstate Love Song. It was a huge hit. Very poppy.
Please react stone temple pilots unglued live letterman 1994 (upgrade) it is the best live of this song.
Every album by STP only got better. BTW, Presidents of USA are awesome too (in a Mel Brooks kind of way)
MTV News flashbacks lmao
And I'm Kurt Loader for MTV News!
What a Fkn album!
I’ve always thought Meatplow was about the dehumanization of fame.
Or the sexualization
Great Generational Album, Great Lyrics Great everything, oh yeah Green Day Sucks
Great reaction, watched it a few times but how dare you even mention those shit bags green day in the same breath as STP.
Great album, .. however iam not liking what they have changed on the re-mastering, original pressing production is better.
