I would like to add something to the explanation of why C is the wrong answer. The passage mentions that for the apes, "repeated exposures" leads to self-directed behaviour, but perhaps if the apes were exposed to a mirror only once, they could display social-behaviour, and since apes are capable of self-awareness, we could eliminate option C.
