Junction 4 used to end in a roundabout, up to about 20 years ago. I believe that's when the canal tunnel was rebuilt to allow its reopening to traffic.
The A663 or Broadway as we locals call it, was originally built in the 1930s to connect the A671 Oldham Road at Royton, to the A62 Oldham Road in Failsworth, to make it quicker and easier to get to and from Manchester to Royton/Shaw/Rochdale areas. Great video Jon, hope you enjoyed Tandle Hill Park.
Love the location choice for the opening. I can just imagine you walking along, spotting .... that ... And thinking "perfect spot". Also, is this the only example of traffic lights on the _main carriage way_? I know there are other places with traffic lights under motorway regs, but they are (mostly?) off the main carriage way, accessible only via a slip lane.
I broke down on the A627M just after lock down ,the turbo went the the jeep I was driving right near the bridge you featured stood there at the side of the road for 4 f-ing hours before being recovered,,anyway on with my weekend,,great video 👍🏻🍺
After you are done with the Secrets of the Motorway series, I would love to see you hunt down and find trap streets... and then try to navigate them as if they were actual roads. It would fit your style, I think!
Told my PCV instructor about the A627Ms traffic light controlled roundabout junction. He argued black and blue with me that there’s no such thing as a roundabout or traffic lights on a motorway. So THANK YOU Jon for proving me right. Yet another excellent video. Safe travels.
Only with John can you be informed, entertained and just when you think.."surely that's enough, John, we don't deserve any more," and he reminds you of the impressive production behind the 'Rude Dawg & the Dweebs' theme. Bravo sir, bravo.
0:05 Putin has indeed... but on a tangent: why are brits so obsessed with testicle size and the number of them ? Back in the good old days a curtain German politician was accused of having just one testicle...
The British view is that aggressive, bullying little men who send others to do their dirty work are invariably cowards, over compensating for a severe lack in the gonads department. 😉
Could you do a vid on the east side of the M60 (when the M63 got renamed) and it's disastrous implementation (worlds longest skid pan) - also the "ugly" railway bridge which was installed in a day, and the almost unique (except for m8?) outside lane slip road from Bredbury onto the M60.
Small point with a tenuous transport connection, specifically while the northwest processed cotton, the northeast was all about wool. This is because cotton was grown in the Americas and shipped over via Liverpool. Yorkshire was further away which made shipping raw cotton too expensive and had great water more suitable for processing wool. The packhorse routes, canals then railways across the pennines were only really used for fetching lancastrian fleeces for processing and exportation of finished cloth.
I understand that the atmosphere on the west of the Pennines is more suitable for producing cotton woven products because it is more humid. The prevailing winds are from the west and when they rise they cause moisture and rain to form. Hence east of the Pennines are less humid which is better for producing wooden goods.
Near the end of the Stakehill link is Hopwood Hall College which has a smaller version of the Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral (Paddy’s Wigwam). We used to walk there for special masses from the nearby Cardinal Langley school which was attended by Steve Coogan (Alan Partridge) We also had to do cross country runs in Tandle Hill
The roundabout at the end of what google erroneously calls the A627(M) is somewhat confusing. It has three exits all of which are marked A664 on the roundabout. Not much help if you are looking for the A664 exit. Bing Maps calls the roundabout (and just the roundabout) the A644 - another map trap or the shortest circular A road?. The sign for the exit to the A627(M) has more left brackets than right brackets so wasn't proof read before being printed, unless it really does go to the A627(M
The A664 connects also to the Slattocks spur, and splits twice: to meet the A58 at Sudden, to pass the northern end of the A627(M) and meet the A58 again north of Tesco, and finally it meets the A58 a third time on the far side of Rochdale. The original A627 routing was from Ashton to Rochdale along the route of the current A671. For about fifteen years after the motorway was open they coexisted.
Brilliant as always and a real Sunday night treat for everyone. We certainly know how to mess up things here in Manchester, and urban legend says that the graffiti on the bridges stems back to the 1970’s when the motorway was built, and is beautifully preserved as a reminder of how inept town planners can be and a warning for future planners. (Please know it was Dave in the Kenny pub who told me about the graffiti, and he also thinks Elvis works at the McDonalds on the A6045 so take graffiti bit with a large sachet of McDonalds salt) 10/10 As always and thank you x
Junction 3 is feckin' nighmare as nobody seems to know the correct lane to get into when crossing it for Rochdale and M62 Eastbound, even though it's painted on the carriageway!
Speaking of copyright traps, I think you should include some completely made up fact in each video as a copyright trap...or just use that excuse for any completely made up facts that already exist in the videos.
Alas, the guy has a grand pair of cojones and the UkroNazis are taking one hell of a beating. Was it so hard for the Kiev headbangers to implement a UN-agreed treaty and stop bombing their own civilians?
Shorter videos means soon it'll be just a 'hello' followed by a 'goodbye'...with an advert thrown in there to make it at least a 30 second offering. p.s. was the paint still wet on the graffiti by any chance?
There would be so many concerns raised by local residents if Broadway (A663) would have been converted to motorway standards when the M60 was finally completed (watch the M60 video LOL). There are so many houses and schools built on or use Broadway so that would have caused nightmares at the planning stages. Then again, Broadway is a complete nightmare to begin with so who knows if the upgrade would have helped anyway? I do love the location of the introduction!!! Pretty much sums up everything.
The A627(M) at junction 2 where you got the Slattocks link road that is part of the A627(M). That small motorway could have been renumbered as the A664(M) Slattocks link road. And yes the A627(M) would have had a flyover that would have gone over M62 at junction 3 at Kirkholt Interchange (south of Rochdale). The A627(M) acts like a small expressway linking Rochdale and Oldham and avoiding Slattocks village where the A664 passes through. I was thinking if the A627(M) could have been renumbered as the A664(M) or maybe re-classified as the M627 or M664 Motorway.
I hate that roundabout. If it's the same one im thinking of. I always end up in the wrong lane as it's signs read Manchester (East) Manchester (North) ..etc and not being local i haven't a bstd clue which way im facing as I've lost my bearings by then lol
right at the start, the putin comment... I could not help myself but laugh, unfortunately i was laughing for the rest of the video... you couldn't have picked a better spot!!
You mentioned Stakehill industrial estate, I spent 5 months working in a warehouse during a winter when I was 19, It was that cold and foggy (It's built on Marshland) The loading bays were open all through the night, I ended up getting Pneumonia and a Blood clot on my lung for sat driving Forklift trucks. Every time I see or hear of that, Hell Hole I get a cold shiver down my spine.
I kid you not, only yesterday myself and my family were making mundane trip on the A31 in our Toyota Auris 1.6 Estate when our son asked if there were traffic lights on a motorway. I suggested we reach out to you, given your subject matter expertise on the topic and loandbehold, not even 24 hours later, here we are.
Fantastic stuff! Bogus road numbers? Intellectual property dramas? Traffic lights on (barely contains disbelief) a roundabout that bisects a motorway? A big lump of concrete with a playgroundesque reference to the suspected inferiority of a madcap dictator-in-all-bit-name’s manhood? Done deal on all counts! How on earth do you do it? 🤷🏻♂️🤔 💡 Worth the licence fee alone ironically enough 🤣😂😅 Cheers John 💚🍀🍷👍
Pre transporter days I did a lot of foodsftuffs from factory to supermarket distribution centres, I used to spend so long on Stakehill waiting to unload at the craphole depots for 3 in particular I could easily end up on a night out and it was only a 90 minute trip from the yard to the estate. Don't get me started on the inability folk have to read the (not) teeny weeny lane markers and traffic lights at the roundabout. If only they were slightly bigger and the lights a bit brighter I'd have a 30 year accident free record to my name.

Putin has bigger balls than Biden, according to the Saudis.
That opening shot 😂😂😂 Hilarious, and probably true.

'Putin has tiny balls'
😂😂
I'm sure he does.
I would just like to say I approve wholeheartedly of your choice of location for the introduction. Such a picturesque backdrop.
Yes. Very reminiscent of 1940’s propaganda movies.
Only 5 seconds into the vid and that backdrop choice already earned a like from me!

Oh yes the A663 is pretty rubbish, lots of traffic lights and traffic jams, especially at the M60 junction area.

M271 near Southampton also stops for an at-grade roundabout where it meets M27, as did the former A601(M) near Carnforth
Bradford end of the M606 has traffic lights on the main carriageway. The thumbnail for Jon's video has "traffic lights on the motorway!?" in it.

Junction 8/9 on the M4. Jon covered this with his A404(M) and A308(M) vlogs
M60/m62 junction at sinister is a huge 3 level junction...... with traffic lights to continue on the M60 🤷🏻
Thank you... for just doing this. every week. reliably. I look forward to each of your videos.
Amen.

“Putin has tiny ballz” is this a political statement by some well informed locals, or just perfectly placed graffiti 😂.
