She was only 23 when she performed this. This was the performance that shot her to stardom, and Lady Gaga quickly became a household name after this. Lady Gaga herself has even mentioned this night as the first defining point for her career that forever changed her life.

So many people found the blood to be weird but her selling of the "injury" whilst singing like she's psychotic and obsessed was AMAZING. True artist. This is easily the best version of this song. much better than the radio version. So much emotion and range.

Funny, people were already saying MTV was irrelevant back in 2009... and yeah I agree. I loved the channel for what it was back in the 90s. TRL, BSB, and of course the Thong Song xD

It's impossible to get the life official video. I wish I had my beta smart phone recording this at the time but who knew it was gonna be epic like this and that evidence if it wouldn't be a thing.

This whole performance is on replay in my head at all times of the day
This was her big break. I followed her before this because I paid attention to MTV up and coming artists but this was what shot her to stardom. No one was expecting the blood. No one knew what she was going to do next in those days. And that’s what made her so iconic
THIS tho... esp back then, nobody was doing what she was doing. Now in the 2020s this seems so tame to what people are willing to do for fame. But Gaga was always the blueprint.
IMO all her videos gave away that she was a theater person... The funny thing now is she's sooooo stripped down.
Yeah, all of that but also I think this was the night the world, Hollywood, and anybody else realized... Gaga could sing SING. At least that's what I felt, because before this I had never really seen her perform BIG. The theatrics plus the LIVE vocals... how could you not fall in love?!
I feel like the three things that took her beyond what anyone would believe was:
1. The Poker Face piano performance. Critics believed she was all show and no talent and she proved them wrong.
2. This performance, which proved her live performance was not just vocally amazing but unique and brilliantly entertaining in a way many hadn’t seen in a long time.
3. Bad Romance, a video that still is considered one of the greatest in music video history.

I remember watching this live too. I watched it with my Mom and my daughter Jade. Jade is a huge Gaga fan. I am too but you can really see Gaga's influence in Jade's style especially during Halloween, I've helped her recreate some of Gaga's looks.
what’s amazing is that the blood wasn’t supposed to get in her eye and she said it burned so bad but she was STILL in character!!!
Having watched 2009's MTV VMA live is one of my best memories. All the MJ tributes, seeing Gaga become an icon with this performance, was just PERFECT!

What a moment in pop history. This was the performance that gagged everyone. She was not just that girl with a couple of hits, she was an ARTIST. Being a Gaga fan back then was incredible. Any release, music video, performance, etc. was very significant. Nowadays, she’s proved how in the same year she can release a power ballad, an experimental record and an award winning performance in a film. Stefani, you’ll always be famous.

The most iconic performance. She popped off so hard in this era. Truly no one was doing what she was doing. Pop had a formula which was getting repetitive and she came on the scene and changed everything.

@@Rose-sy2sh They’re all iconic too but MJ aside, Britney and Madonna tend to lip sync. They make up for it with there dancing and charisma.
However this performance features live vocals, her classically trained piano skills, choreography and a whole story. Not to mention this was her first ever VMA performance and she was only 23.
@chrisman The Love on Top pregnancy reveal was an iconic moment and Bey always sounds great but you rly can’t compare it to the theatrics, choreography and even live piano skills of this performance. Not to mention this was Gaga’s first ever VMA performance and she was just 23.
@chrisman Oh and I completely agree about Beys 2016 performance, it’s up there in my personal top 10 VMA performances in history and I’m a huge Beyoncé fan too, I just personally find this performance more impressive just because of how young Gaga was and the fact it was her first time. Beyoncé however never misses, I never expect her to not show up and out she’s a shining example of a true professional.

I was 28 when this aired … seems like yesterday. I’ll be 44 this November. Still one of MTVs vma performances. Gaga is an entertainer.
