DO NOT TOWEL DRY YOUR HAIR Don't wrap it in a towel either. Even the softest towel is harsh and messes up the cuticle of your hair, which leads to all kinds of damage. I used to take insane care of my hair, I tried all the oils and masks and leave-in stuff and supplements, I used heat on my hair maybe once a year (literally, once a year, maybe even less than that), and I still got a ton of breakage and split ends. Then I decided to try wrapping my hair in an old oversized t-shirt after I wash it insteat of a towel, and bam, miracle happened, no damage anymore (I've been doing it for almost two years). I also started using tangle teezer and invisibobble, both claim to minimize split ends, and maybe they work too but I think most of the work in my case is done by the t-shirt.
Me too! I always dry my hair with t-shirts out of habit (i typically forget to pick my towel up so i just use any clean shirt lying around the bathroom) and i noticed how soft and smooth my hair feels despite not using any hair treatment. once i use a towel, my hair just feels sort of rough and frizzy
I'm writing this so if anyone is wondering other ways to treat damaged hair, i can hopefully help from my experience... So I have naturally wavy hair and a couple of months ago, I straightened my hair so much (without protection) that it started to break and fall out very easily. However, because I'm only 14 I couldn't take any hair tables (or whatever they're called) so my hair dresser advised me to drink smoothies and take multi-vitamin tablets daily as well as making sure I stayed hydrated and kept my diet properly on track and it actually worked :)
PLEASE do make a video on how the hell to fade out hair dye fast because I'm stuck with a semi permanent that faded from a solid blad to a green to blue to purple ombre, dear god..
There is a great technique where you don't shampoo every day that is really trending now in Brazil. It's called Loo poo/ No poo. The idea is to lay of of sulfates, silicones and petroleum derived substances, and it really makes a HUGE difference. My mom doesn't use shampoo anymore, only to remove dye. I have really greasy hair and even I don't wash it every day anymore. Also, there's another technique called capilar cronogram, where you do a cronogram to treat your hair, with alternate hidration, nutrition and reconstruction. It's AMAZING at recovering really damaged hair. And just to end this on alternate hair dyes, if you mix Henna powder with Indigo powder, it won't come of your hair, like ever again. You can get many shades of brown depending on the proportion you choose, and it's 100% natural. It's and ancient indian technique, really amazing. Anyway, loving the positivity pledge, just wish it would cover your main channel as well. Lots of love from Brazil!
Oh, and if you want to make your hair a bright colour, make shure to buy a dye that is brighter than you want it and put conditioner in it, it wil make the dye lighter and your hair realy soft. It's also less bad i guess, but this is for semi permenent. (al tough arctic fox will stay in your hayr for months if you want it to.)
I've stopped towel drying my hair. Mine is curly and it takes 3 hours to dry so I got fed up of the inconvenience. Plus using a diffuser on my hairdryer has made my curls more defined
I take cod liver oil capsules, makes your burps taste funny but had made not only my health better, but it has made my hair healthier and longer which is great (as I got it cut shorter than I had anticipated and didn't like the length)
To any guys watching this, a lot of the talk about conditioning also applies to beards, though mostly if you keep it longer. If you trim your beard so that it's just longer than stubble, anything like this will have minimal impact since you're regularly trimming off any damage. A lot of people don't do anything special to take care of their beard, but it's so much healthier if you do. I used to shampoo and condition my beard when I showered, but I've since dropped the shampoo and just been washing it with water. If you don't have anything else, or don't want to spend money on care products, regular hair conditioner works fairly well, but recently I've stopped using that in favor of beard care products after I get out of the shower. Beard oils and beard balms are made with oils such as jojoba and argan which are AMAZING for the health of your beard and make it super soft. So a simple routine of rinsing off my beard during my shower, applying beard balm and then brushing it with a boar-bristle brush to distribute the oils has improved my beard health as well as the health of the skin on my face, since those oils are great for your skin as well. Plus, balms and oils smell amazing! Vanilla and peppermint scented balm makes my beard smell like Christmas :D
Disclaimer: all my tips are for curly hair Top tip that I use: Avoid brushing your hair while it's dry, ESPECIALLY if you have curly hair. Brushing it dry is a lot more likely to rip out knots as opposed to detangling them, so when you're washing your hair, load it up with conditioner and use a wide-toothed comb to gently detangle your hair. Also avoid towel drying. The rough surface of the towel can frizz your hair. Use a t-shirt or something of a similar material instead.
THANK YOU!! Honestly I don't dye my hair or straighten or anything, and I was just listening to this to hear your voice while I draw, because I was feeling down and it relaxes me, but then you gave that tip about shampooing once a week and just using conditioner and just... that changes everything! I have very dry, very curly hair and I wash it once every 2 days, but now that I know that shampooing less will mean it's less dry........... !!!!! Just thank you!!!
In addition to the professional products, I'm a big fan of kitchen treatments as well. Sour cream slathered onto your hair for half an hour is magical. Keeps you looking good in between professional treatments since they can be a bit pricey!
this actually made me feel like I'm doing something right. I've never dyed my hair, drink lots of water, and don't put any heat on my hair ever. I do shampoo daily, but it doesn't seem to be having any obvious negative effects. what a great video!
MSM is short for Methylsulfonylmethane. It is basically a chemical that is beneficial for a lot of bodily functions, also with hair growth. It also helps with inflammation as far as I know, and works best when consumed with vitamin C or a liquid which contains said vitamin (ie. orange juice). I like to take it around fall, because that is when my hair sheds quite a bit. I take it along with biotin and folical acid supplements. However, I only do that for 4 weeks or so, to not damage my kidneys too much 😅
For the last several months, I've been using conditioner ONLY on my hair. No product, no heat (other than the sun). I water-rinse it daily and use conditioner about once or twice weekly -- no more than 3x. It's awesome!
I like putting aloe vera on my scalp. It dries matte, doesn't make hair oily but keeps the roots and head moisturized. My sister struggled with dandruff and it hleped her. Also using a t-shirt or a smooth cotton instead of a textured towel, in patting motion is a good tip - leaves hair smoother and less frizzy.
For the best results from Olaplex, use it on hair that is on the brink. Stage 1 opens the cuticle (outer/protective layer) and replaces broken bonds within the cortex (the part of the hair that defines thickness and contains pigment) and then stage 2 perfects those bonds and closes the cuticle again. Stage 3 is basically a watered down version of Stage 2 just to keep up the condition of the hair. So, just to recap, use it as a last resort. It's expensive, but will save your hair and reverse all damage. From a hairdresser.... 💇🏻
Yesssss em! Please post some hair dye related topics! Your fave cruelty free hair dyes, maybe different colours/ brands', keeping the colour, fading the colour! Pls 💖💖💖
we are so alike in some regards. I stopped bleaching & dying my hair crazy colours this year as well and am now actively trying to look more "boring" or more "normal" (and it feels great, it's like a big confusing part of my life finally ended and I'm more myself now) so these tips are really useful thanks!
For my hair I do a mask on my own with honey, olive oli and yogurt, wrap it up with plastic to keep the heat and keep it for like 45 minutes, even an hour and it is SO GOOD for hair, they are so soft and shiny, I love it! I don't think that this works for every tipe of hair, but for mine it has done wonders, really. Honey is good even as a face mask too, you just need some honey and a little bit of lemon juice, it makes my skin so soft!
Also, co washing (conditioner washing) with a silicone-free conditioner is a really good way for people with coarse or curly hair to wash and get more moisture. Just remember that you need to use more conditioner to co-wash.
you don't need shampoo ever if you have the correct conditioner! I haven't used shampoo for 2 years and my hair has never felt better! I believe it's called "The conditioner method" if you wanna look up what brands to use :)
I use the lush henna to dye my hair and even though it's a bit messy, I feel that my hair loves it. It even stays on longer than normal dye. I would highly recommend that to dye your hair with.
Thank you for these videos, they help me a lot and stop anxiety attacks. I just listen to what youre saying. but now ive run out of videos to watch nooo. when are you posting more?
I love this new channel, i like seeing this side of you as well as the satirical side, respect what you are doing with the positivity thing, hope this channel turns into what yo want it to be
I have that deep conditioner from Shea Moisture and my white people curly hair LOVES it. It's the best, I use it as a leave-in conditioner so I don't have to use conditioner in the shower.
ogx has a really nice argan oil conditioner too which can be used like a hair mask if you leave it in for a long time. Its so nourishing and has saved my processed hair many times.
Most natural fats are generally polyunsaturated or monounsaturated which are a lot less harmful than saturated fats (just look at all the Omega-n fats). This is because manufactured fats tend to break the double carbon bond and this makes it harder for the body to process leading to obesity and increased heart disease risk; inversely, mono-unsaturated fats within moderation can improve heart function. Obviously, all fats need to be eaten in moderation, saturated or not, but you can consume more unsaturated than saturated without it being 'unhealthy' for you. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15531663 academic.oup.com/eurheartj/article/32/14/1769/528352/ESC-EAS-Guidelines-for-the-management-of
This is kind of irrelevant to this specific video, but Emma has quickly become one of my favorite TH-camrs lately, I've been subscribed to her for years, but only recently I've started watching her more, and yup, she's one of my favorites
Finally someone who believes in not using heat for hair all the time, adding extra oil and not washing everyday!! I always get a angry "ewwww" reaction!! Tip: Brush hair when slightly damp, not to wet as this can pull on your hair and not dry because your hair would have notted up and you and up pulling on your hair again!! if can you use a comb that would be better. Doing this will make your hair feel less tense! :)
As well as a video on how to fade dye faster, could you do a video on how to keep your dye in longer? As in, what products to avoid, which will help best, etc.
I only wash my hair once a week, not through choice, but it's one of the best thing I could do. I've lost a lot of hair through malnutrition, again, not through choice, yet the hair left is so healthy. I don't go to a hairdresser, I trim my own hair, so no over excessive amounts of products go in my hair. I shampoo and condition my hair, and occasionally do a hair mask. I don't use heat to dry my hair or style my hair, instead I brush it wet, put it in two tight braids so it's all back, neat n tidy, and leave it alone. Not brushing my hair so much has been the best thing for my hair 💕
I cant remember if Emma said about this but once a week I do a coconut oil hair mask. you can get coconut oil from like superdrug or boots and it's quite cheap. I just evenly put coconut oil all throughout my hair before I go to bed and then wash it out the next day with conditioner and it really helps my hair feel smooth and healthier. I had hair that was about shoulder length in the summer and I over dyed and bleached it so much that it just became so damaged I couldn't run my hands through it so now I actually cut it off and have really short hair and I kinda dig it!!! love you Emma!
IMO Emma your hair is the best its ever looked rn! I'm loving the length and the color its very nice! :) just my opinion of course it is your hair after all :D but this was also very informative!
man this is so useful??? I've recently started dying my hair A LOT (what? It looks nice!) and I've been worried about damaging it, so I really needed this. thanks for helping us all out xx
Not sure if you'll even see this Emma, but on the topic of hair I thought I'd let you know you shaving your head inspired me to donate my hair last year (14 inches, took ages to get to that) to a charity that makes wigs for children who have lost their hair for different reasons. Just letting you know your good deed may have inspired many others!
My mother uses the OGX nourishing coconut oil weightless hydrating oil most and her hair is sooooooo shiny and soft so yeah, highly recommend it to you
I'm growing my hair (it's fairly long now but I want it butt-length) and I dye it all sorts of colours. I really could do with picking up some of those supplements, my hair grows fine and considering what I've put it through is pretty healthy really, but every little helps! I also didn't know that olaplex is vegan and cruelty free, I'll have to try that out at some point. - If you're tying your hair up be careful what you use to do it scrunchy type hair ties are the best because thinner ones put more strain on the hair, it's also good to avoid tying it too tight in general for the same reason. - If you're dying your hair try to use dyes that are just adding colour, products like manic panic or la riche directions (which is what I use) are good and they usually contain at least some conditioner, you can add more conditioner to dilute the dye a little more but you don't have to. - I've heard that coconut milk and avocado mixed together make a really good hair mask (rich in protein and natural fats). - Wide toothed hair brushes/combs cause less hair breakage, be careful not to overbrush your hair. - Leave conditioner in for a half hour to try to get the most out of it, apparently any longer is excessive and won't do that much but you can totally put on a shower cap and sleep with conditioner in. - If you're bleaching your hair it's better to use lower values (20vol/30vol) and do it gradually than to use a higher volume to do it quickly, also give your hair time to rest/recover between bleaches (I refuse to bleach more than once every couple of months even if I've got regrowth). - If you're trying to keep your colour, wash your hair in cool water and don't let it hang in your bath water if you're using a bath bomb, bath salts or bubble bar, those sorts of products strip colour out of dyed hair like nobodies business. - The more natural the products are you use the better, avoid sulfates and silicates because they don't help your hair and leave a build up so your hair seems healthy when it's not (I was told off for this once when I used to go to hair dressers). - If you ever have a colour mishap, look at colour theory, it is super helpful in neutralising unwanted tones in your hair without resorting to harsh colour lifters. I'm not a professional in any sense of the word but I've been doing my hair for well over a year and that calls for a lot of research which often comes from professionals or those with tons of experience. When in doubt, Google.
Emma you should try nu-gro hair products. Their leave in spray helped me so much. My hair grows slowly too and with this spray it made my hair grow up to an inch an month!! Please try anyone with dry hair, afro-texture or not!
It's easier to spread the Olaplex if your hair is a little more on the wetter side, in which you will save more product. The way I would use it was to shampoo my hair in the shower, wrap it up in a microfiber towel after I got out (which is better for your hair), and then put it in about five minutes later and I believe I would just condition after I washed it out. Anyway, I was able to get about 6 applications out of the travel-size bottle (like half the size). Also, you don't really start to notice results until about the 4th application. But good video, speaking as a stylist :)
I love this vloggery channel, it's really nice at the end of the day to watch a chill sit down video before going to bed 😊 I'm really happy that you're enjoying making videos again by the way Emma!
It is ridiculous that we've found ourselves in a place, societally, where we feel the need to clarify this, that or another thing. But don't distance yourself from people, just the stupidity. Set an example that naturally doesn't need to justify itself unless it be necessary.
As someone with natural hair, I feel you. What about washing it in the evening so that it's dry in the morning? You can even braid it wet so that you have natural curls in the morning (if that's something you're into).
My hair is bleached blonde so it can get a bit dry, I avoid that by washing it with shampoo and conditioner usually once a week, and just water on other days. over time I've found it just conditions itself and is usually pretty soft 😊
As a guy I struggle with my hair a lot. I was trying to pull some Adam Jensen look since it's very dense and it grows on all sides (plus I have a wealthy beard) but Lord... Having that look is a step. MAINTAINING IT is the ultimate challenge.
The roots at the back of my hair gradually build up oil week after week between washes both with and without shampoos containing SLS or SLES. The only thing I've found to relieve is to use washing up liquid and it completely gets rid of the oil build up and it actually becomes soft again.
you can use heat protecting spray on your hair if you have to use heat and it actually makes it deal like it was done in a hairdressers / salon cause that's what they do
I use eggs instead of shampoo... my hair is past my bum in length and grows at an insanely fast rate. It leaves my hair soft and shiny and not at all oily! I would totally recommend this to those who are not vegan. If you decide to do this though, make sure the water you are rinsing in is not hot, or you will cook the eggs!
my goood, Emma, THANK YOU SO FREAKIN MUCH!1!!! I struggle with making my hair healthier although I don't dye it and your tips are definitely really-really helpful. nothing to add to that, you're amazing ♡
When my hair wouldn't hold colour from over bleaching I found that adores semi permanent dyes in natural colours would stick just as well as the manic panic or crazy colour bright dyes :) way longer than box dyes without the damage
I damaged the crap out of my hair not too long ago by bleaching it. I have naturally curly hair and it was so damaged that it wouldn't curl. I used only the olaplex take-home treatment for a couple weeks and it saved my hair. Would definitely recommend it and FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS. I know it seems weird to shampoo it out but hair science is weird don't question it.
Would love a video on stripping hair colour tbh. My colour changes every month/two and 1) It's obviously damaging my hair a ton. 2) Stripping colour without bleach I've found to be a pain.
this video was v v helpful Emma! could you maybe make a video about how you grew out your hair after you shaved it? how did you deal with the mullets n stuff lmao I'm struggling growing out a pixie
I didn't know about the just washing your hair with conditioner thing :) thanks Emma! I will be trying that out soon. I really need to train my hair so that it produces less oils.
According to my tricologist, most shampoos and conditioners aren't PH neutral, but ideally that's what you should be using and if you are using PH neutral shampoo and conditioner, you should be using shampoo every day and conditioner only about once a week.
My tip would be If you really have to straighten your hair then I would suggest using john Frieda 3 day straight spray. It works for me and it will mean u don't have to straighten everyday
I stopped using straighners or even hair dryers when im not in a rush, and just let my hair dry naturally. ive been doing that for a good few years and my hair now grows so much quicker.. its down at my chest now. Its funny you uploaded this today as ive been lightening my hair from near black to blonde all week. ive failed so bad lol im sat here with bright orange and white hair.. going to stick a brown in now. A friend told me today about putting coconut oil in your hair as a treatment is meant to be good for repairing dye damage. im going to try it
I always used coconut oil when I had dyed hair. it's really good plus it's cheap!! you can just get coconut fat in stores and then later you can just melt the fat and put it in your hair.
I've heard another good thing is the "Search and Destroy" method for preventing split ends: you grab a pair of hair scissors and look through your hair for split ends, and just cut those. It's easier if you have longer hair, so you're able to see what you're doing, but it's apparently really good if you're trying to grow out your hair because you don't have to trim it so often.
Shea Moisture is a amazing they have a blue tub that is for high porosity, I would recommend that one.. my b,each blonde hair shined for the first time in years
Hey Emma, you should look into co-washing! Sounds like you're almost there already but substituting those 1-2 shampoo washes for a light conditioner could really help your hair :) sounds gross but if you massage it in properly then it cleans your scalp just as well as shampoo does. My bleached ends would have been breaking off if I hadn't started co-washing.
Olaplex is a keratin treatment. it's not that it stops damage, it's more that it really deeply conditions while bleaching. I'm not an expert so correct me if I'm wrong, this is just vaguely what my hairdresser told me. Keratese (or smthn) is a cheaper brand that does a similar thing and it genuinely works
Also (wow I'm a loser replying to my own comment twice) I have greasy hair so should I only condition the ends daily? Not expecting a response but it would help to know
Hey, I just said this in a comment, but since you're asking for advice, I thought I'd paste it here. everyone is always asking me how do i keep my hair in such good condition even when i dye it often, and tbh i do most of what emma said in this video. 100% agree!
Am i the only one that just loves the sound of her voice?

Spread the love ❤️❤️❤️
I think my favorite thing about this channel is Emma's voice. I really like her voice.

Yay a new Emma video! Thanks for making my day 😊
BLESS THIS. My hair has been damaged for a couple years due to bleaching it so much and its just so thin. Wow thanks Emma

I believe it's called "The conditioner method" if you wanna look up what brands to use :)
you should look into CO-washing! i've only washed my hair twice with this method and oh my god

this is a link, tons of information
'Fatty foods can help your hair' boi if that were true I'd have fair from China to America
your name is my life wtf
😂😂😂😂
When she said fatty I believe she was talking about NATURAL fats, such as avocados or nuts (as mentioned in the video), not saturated fats.

This is kind of irrelevant to this specific video, but Emma has quickly become one of my favorite TH-camrs lately, I've been subscribed to her for years, but only recently I've started watching her more, and yup, she's one of my favorites
Hi Emma, just want to say that i watched your videos years back, but I've recently come back to your channel through this channel and I love it!!
I'm really loving this channel Emma! You're main channel is really funny and I love it but this channel is super cool! Keep being amazing
I love watching your videos on here after school because I find them really relaxing, thank you for making them
I only wash my hair once a week, not through choice, but it's one of the best thing I could do.

Your hair looks great brown 💕
Shea Moisture castor oil shampoo is sooooo good. All of their products are extremely nice! Definitely recommend them!
This video didn't really relate to me, but I listened all the way through, because your voice is very soothing!
IMO Emma your hair is the best its ever looked rn! I'm loving the length and the color its very nice! :) just my opinion of course it is your hair after all :D but this was also very informative!
These are perfect videos to watch before going to sleep. These are so calming :D
+ i'm one of those people who shower everyday but only wash their hair once a week. My hair is so better now!
man this is so useful??? I've recently started dying my hair A LOT (what? It looks nice!) and I've been worried about damaging it, so I really needed this. thanks for helping us all out xx
I'll try to keep these in mind as I'm trying to grow my hair out for a Lara croft cosplay. Thank you Emma love your videos
Thanks for the advice, Emma!
I love this vloggery channel, it's really nice at the end of the day to watch a chill sit down video before going to bed 😊 I'm really happy that you're enjoying making videos again by the way Emma!
i love the random chatty channel emma! keep up the great work😊🌻
Do you bulk record these videos? No hate just wondering!
I think she does. I guess it would be difficult to upload so many videos if she recorded them all separately.
i do! i try to get a few done at the same time and edit them throughout the week
+Audrey Popo what do you mean?
It is ridiculous that we've found ourselves in a place, societally, where we feel the need to clarify this, that or another thing. But don't distance yourself from people, just the stupidity. Set an example that naturally doesn't need to justify itself unless it be necessary.
I wish I could air dry my hair but it's so thick and so long that it takes legit days to dry naturally
As someone with natural hair, I feel you. What about washing it in the evening so that it's dry in the morning? You can even braid it wet so that you have natural curls in the morning (if that's something you're into).
+rumbim thank you for the tips!!! I'll give that a try :)
Love love love this channel, please don't delete it this time! XD
The roots at the back of my hair gradually build up oil week after week between washes both with and without shampoos containing SLS or SLES. The only thing I've found to relieve is to use washing up liquid and it completely gets rid of the oil build up and it actually becomes soft again.
Emma, you actually convinced me to give my hair a break from constant shampoo. I'll try :)
This is my favourite of your channels Emma, it's amazing :)
ohhhhh the damp hair thingy! I didn't know that damp hair was the most effective one, I've used oils on dry hair oops. Thanks for the tips Emma!
you can use heat protecting spray on your hair if you have to use heat and it actually makes it deal like it was done in a hairdressers / salon cause that's what they do
I use eggs instead of shampoo... my hair is past my bum in length and grows at an insanely fast rate.
Finally someone else is on the conditioner-only bandwagon! I pretty much only wash my hair with conditioner now.
Would love a video on stripping hair colour tbh. My colour changes every month/two and 1) It's obviously damaging my hair a ton. 2) Stripping colour without bleach I've found to be a pain.
*drinks full bottle of water*
*looks in mirror*
"has my hair grown yet"
this video was v v helpful Emma! could you maybe make a video about how you grew out your hair after you shaved it? how did you deal with the mullets n stuff lmao I'm struggling growing out a pixie
I didn't know about the just washing your hair with conditioner thing :) thanks Emma! I will be trying that out soon. I really need to train my hair so that it produces less oils.
Tip: avoid all hair products with silicone (I've heard that ingredients ending with one and ane is silicone(?), and sulfates
I just looked at your first video on this channel and then this one, it looks like your hair has grown, how exciting!
I love the colour of your hair, it really suits your eyes and skin tone
Thank you for making a video about hair care, This is really helpful because my hair is in V v bad condition, Ill try the things out 😊
According to my tricologist, most shampoos and conditioners aren't PH neutral, but ideally that's what you should be using and if you are using PH neutral shampoo and conditioner, you should be using shampoo every day and conditioner only about once a week.
Emma, can you talk about how you take care of your skin too? It always looks so amazing!
Keratese (or smthn) is a cheaper brand that does a similar thing and it genuinely works
the aphogee conditioner is also amazing
Been thinking of dying my hair recently- Thanks for the advice!
My hair kinda hates me, so I'll probably need this advice if I do dye it- especially multiple times
Also (wow I'm a loser replying to my own comment twice) I have greasy hair so should I only condition the ends daily? Not expecting a response but it would help to know
Hey, I just said this in a comment, but since you're asking for advice, I thought I'd paste it here. Good luck with your hair!:
Nightingale21 Thanks for the advice!
i just loove vloggery 💛 so many great topics
everyone is always asking me how do i keep my hair in such good condition even when i dye it often, and tbh i do most of what emma said in this video. 100% agree!
i find all of your videos geneuanly fasinating. Thank you for all that you do:)
