I do a lot of free motion with a domestic electric sewing machine
Yesterday I found a machine like yours in a charity shop and after watching your video went back today to get it
I figure that st thd very least I have a nice machine for heavy top stiching or heavy fabric but hopefully some free motion experiments
I need to get a darning foot
    Thanks!!!

This is such a great inspirational video! Thank u very much for your ideas. I was practicing FMQ on a treadle and not getting good results. It came across me why not using a handcrank…. Easier to control …. But one hand? Then I found your video!!! Definitely will experiment what u demonstrated. 👍😄

Very thorough examination of the free motion process in general. I have encountered every issue or problem you cite while learning and using a modern machine, so your discussion is really valuable from a general "free motion" instructional vantage point. Thanks very much, I know much more what to be looking for now as the source of any problems.

Brilliant video! I have a modern combination embroidery/sewing machine but inherited a Singer hand crank although I have yet to attempt free motion on the latter. Love your idea of the rubber bands on the hoop and you've given me ideas for a homemade version of the Brother horseshoe hoop. In the past I've used foam board to make an extension table and secured a teflon oven sheet over it to reduce fabric resistance as well as to cover the feed dogs but I cut out a hole about the size of a paper punch hole for the needle to pass through. The cutout also allows for any slight shifting of the extension table without it causing problems to the stitching. The teflon works really well to avoid the hoop bumping against either the extension table or the machine bed when the two don't quite level up! My first attempt at a diy extension table was an upturned shoe box at the side of the machine with the teflon sheet taped to the side of the needle plate and simply draped over the box but the foam board setup was best and I used it for well over a year until I bought a pucka extension table. As a righthander, you could almost use the machine back to front so that your dominant right hand is moving the fabric. There is nothing on the front that you need to see/press so it might work although it might be awkward to crank the fly wheel towards to you! I'm lefthanded so don't have a problem with the standard handcrank setup. Thanks again for a most informative video - I'm now a subscriber to your channel!

      Thank you so much!
I hadn't thought of turning the machine and cranking with my left hand, that's genius! Ill have to try that.
My poor potnoodle pots didn't last very long (I don't think I glued them enough), so was thinking of making a wooden version, but something that can go around the whole machine (or rather, a big piece of wood with a hole cut out so the base of the machine fits in the middle) as I found after a while the makeshift extension tends to move away. I did try taping the extension around the machine, but it wasn't very good.
Now you've given me more ideas, especially with the teflon. Thank you so much!
If you have any attachments that came with your Singer, I have a few videos that talk through how to use them. Just forgive the bloopers in my videos (I haven't learned how to edit videos, so they are a little raw and a lot of me giggling or faffing).
Thank you so much for subscribing, I hope the videos are helpful.

@@sewythingy If you have legs on the extension table, you could always tie a cord to one leg, sling the cord round to the back of the machine and attach the cord to a rear leg - that might stop it shifting. An alternative would be the carpet anti-slip underlay stuff that's sold in sheet form. I don't think I have any attachments for my 110 year old 128K and I don't actually use it although it is fully functional. It's currently living quite comfortably in my garage as I don't have a space for it in my sewing room. I have to admit to not being sorry that I've been able to advance from using a treadle machine when I was eleven or so via several other mechanical machines to where I am now with an almost all-singing and dancing computerised machine but I still love watching other people use hand crank and treadle machines and some of what is produced is fantastic! Video editing takes time and effort, and a few mistakes and bloopers make them all the more natural. I look forward to seeing what you produce in the future. Regards!

Yes I had thought about cording, or even a strap that I could tighten. Have to have another Blue Peter day and try some different options.
I only learned to sew during lockdown with a little 28k I found. It sparked a crazy urge to collect more machines to bring them back to life, and learn to sew on them.
I now have two Treadles and absolutely love treadling and can get a good speed going.
I'm working on restoring another at the moment, so the poor thing is in bits around the house, it's like a sewing machine hospital/spa centre at my place 🤣

Main problem is the hight of the needle because of fmq of thicker blankets. I own a few hand crank mashines but with old shuttles, my oldest seems to be the Singer from 1895 but i also use my newer ones (1900- 1959) and i love them all- most of all my Jax- a much better sewing feeling than my Singers! For fmq not usful if the plate cannot sink down and have tp find old foots with a feather so i would not use the hand cranks for this, but the foot pedal mashines will work fine for thin Quilts. I 'm a perspn whp loves antique mashines- no question! but for big thick blankets i would use a Juki hallf industrial mashine with thread cutter- this is luxory pure in this case but fpr all other sewing works i would use of course myold Ladies❤ Thanks dor this video❤

Well that was very interesting 😊 thankyou for all your perseverance, it was like I was sitting next to you and I was itching to do the cranking so you could do your weedlings 😂. I've learned a lot from a couple of your videos today. I'm a lover of the beautiful vintage machines but I'm not sure I could cope with the muscles on my muscles and the dexterity to achieve free motion with my hand cranks. I've got painful joints in my hands and wrists so I think so maybe I could try free motion using my electric featherweight 221, any idea if the feed dogs could be dropped on these machines? . I've got a beautiful 201k treadle but I can't get down to put the belt on it so the poor little thing is just sitting quietly in its cupboard, I'm not even sure I'd have the coordination to treadle 😂😂 but I couldn't resist buying it. I've really enjoyed your video, I was supposed to be watching Vera on the TV tonight but was too mesmerised with watching you, I've also had a couple of chuckles too. Thanks again, I'm subscribed now. By the way what's your name ? can't call you "sewy thingy" 😂xx

Aww thank you very much ❤️❤️❤️
My name is Sam, hello 😁
The feed dogs don't drop on the 221, but if you set stitch length to zero it will work. You can also buy a feed dog cover plate for the 221.
But you 201k can drop the feed dogs, and treadling free motion is much easier, and the 201 will be able to handle it beautifully.
Ah yes it does mean fitting a belt to the treadle, but it is very simple to do.
I absolutely adore my 201 in the treadle 😁😁
