This man, the definition of class. "Oh my grandfather invented the volume on the radio and a method to put sound on film" and still is crazy humble. Props to this man.
What a great and down-to earth person. He shares his knowledge delightfully, understandably, He is fun, down-to-earth, cheery. Lovely. Thank you, Dr. Poliakoff.
Martyn is quite possibly one of the nicest people that one could meet. Smart, funny, charismatic, and above all, real. We need more people like him!! Thank you for all of Nottingham U's great videos...I have recently discovered 60 Symbols and that too is a very intriguing channel. If I had the cash, I'd go there to continue my education, but sadly, I am not rich. Still, I can get a taste of what it's like to be in the presence of such revered men and women. Thank you all!
KC Le Jeune I had some email correspondense with his a few years ago about the human popn problem. I have Met Poliakoff twice when I was studying chemistry in Nottingham on a PHD. He seemed ok in person. But he is very selfcentered and rude and selfopiniatred. I can send it to you if you like. He rubbished all Darwin solutions and refused to discuss the problem., just laying the law to me. Scienctists are meant to be open minded, not selfopinated. he has never given me 1 single piece of evidence to support his ideas. I think he is breaking the Royal Society motto Nullius in Verba "take no ones work for it, check for yourself.. he just expects me to obey him and to worship him. But I will not.
At 2:54 he presents the answer to making kids excited about learning things: forbid it. No! You cannot study trigonometry! Now get back to making macaroni art! Brilliant.
We all love you Professor Poliakoff! He's such a nice English gent and that awesome scientist hair. Without him the periodic table of videos would not have been as great as they have become
This man is one of the most interesting people out there. Even though he, himself isn't overly energetic, he has so many interesting things to share. And also his hair is amazing. xD
I was 9 years old when I found my father's store of KMnO4 , he was a DVM, and discovered the pretty purple trail it radiates when the crystals are dropped in water. Every container of stagnant water in the house was colored purple. I'm sure I prevented some people from catching malaria since I killed every mosquito larvae for a 1-kilometer radius. Then I found the container of hydrogen peroxide, looks like water right? Well, the reaction was more energetic if the crystals were dropped in the hydrogen peroxide. My parent's bathroom needed a fresh coat of paint anyway, I thought after the bottle exploded. It made the bathroom look like Jackson Pollack's -Lavender Mist, only more colorful. Thank you, Sir-Prof. P and crew, I've enjoyed all of your Periodic Videos
When empress Maria Feradorona (princess Dagmar) escaped back to Denmark in 1919, she did bring with her two kozak gards. One one of them had the name Poliakoff.
Though Im a 47 yr old disabled father of 5 in the US, Id love nothing more than to begin tomorrow at Nottingham as a Freshman Astrophysics student. Of course, Id have a few Chemistry classes, even as electives. The cruelty of life vexes me. Im a disabled Art Professor, with all the time in the world to go to school, though Id miss many days due to my condition, but Im sure if I even tried to take one class, SS would be calling to ask if i am still disabled...guh...thank Goodness for Nottingham!
Great guy, a good reminder that not everyone his age is grumpy, uninspiring and boring! Thanks for being such an open minded and passionate scientist who joins the youtube community!
Thank you Professor Poliakoff, and thank you Brady. After 2 years of watching as many of your videos as I can, I've finally tracked back to this one. So.. Brady, we are all pretty sure we know where Martyn Poliakoff will be in the near future, but where will you be in the next 12-24 months? You've been at University a bit longer than your average student! =) Nobody wants to see you go, but I think everyone is curious!
Martyn is such a sweet humbling generous person who is extremely intelligent and should be in every middle schools and universities across the world giving lectures
I'd love to go to Nottingham's university. I love science, but I don't know much or have read about chemistry as much as other sciences such as astronomy, a science I love very dearly but I cannot imagine how I would get a job studying etc, especially since that I'm slightly more interested in the nature of the universe, like its physics, compared to the physical science that I am perhaps falsely assuming NASA operates around.
I've just seen the video in which he tells the dangers of alcohol distillation on a closed environment and now I know he used to do it on a basement in his younger years. Quite amusing.
@jsullivan05 he isn't wearing his ring because he works with dangerous chemicals (once he worked with aqua regia, and his ring is made from gold,he said it) so it is better not to wear it than to ruin it :)
@Trollingwithmyhomies Whoa, easy, Tex. I'm just a disabled Professor Emeritus of Art, who rarely even lectures now, but my best friend is the Chair of the Graduate Program of Astrophysics. He and I often talk about how The Arts and Sciences overlap each other in many ways. Simple analogy: When a Physicist nails a great equation, he speaks of its elegance and beauty, as would an Artist. An Artist, if like me, makes his own Paint, Varnishes and Mediums as precisely as would a chemist. I vote like!
Hello Martin i have a question if you have noble gas in liquid form for example Helium. What happen if it meet water and goes thru phasetransition in an enclosed system freeze or boil? Will the water boil by the pressure change, well i was thinking some sort of weird steem engine taking advantage of liquid Helium rather then raised pressure thru combustion of material. Water and liquid Helium to drive a car ;), well i do not know where to get the liquid Helium i guess it rather expensive process to cool it down, unless you pump it up from under the ice sheet of Antarctica ;) Rumour says the Aliens have steem engines in their ships Martin steem engines driven by liquid Helium :)
hey i want to ask you about your curly hair. This is because in hong kong those fishermen have hair similar and that is due to excessive lead exposure. is your's the same
can you ask him to explain negatively charged water and its characteristics in being used with d2o inside a stainless positive anode (POSITIVE) with a cathode (NEGATIVE) inside that hit with plasma spark at the sponge tungstan tip ....look up wik wip that will explain what i am trying to find out thank you.
There are so very few things people agree in TH-cam comments. One of those things seems to be the fact that the professor is great.
He grew up surrounded with family members involved in the arts and sciences. Lucky fella.
Oliver Lavelle
What about it?
I am the first in my family to go to university 😢
Correction: he is now Sir Martyn Poliakoff
Sir doctor poliocoff
Sir is even higher in rank than the prefixes Dr or professor.
JorgeSalasify You know, for like, British people. The rest of us couldn't care a less
Mr. Red Bird So you do care? At least a little bit?
Properly, he is Professor Sir Martyn Poliakoff.
I can't believe I'm going to watch a lecture by him in Brazil this year, I'm so excited
How was that?
@@mr.n0ne I too want to know how it went

@@Samuelon552 it was everything I was expecting, it was about supercritical CO2 and I got to take a picture with him... such a nice man

as a chemistry student i just adore The Proffesor! Long live Martyn!
Such a lovely professor. And that lamp is so cool. I need one.
He is sweet and adorable!! Absolutely lovely!!

I can't get enough of Martyn's stories. I just enjoy hearing him talk and hearing his thoughts.
Oh Sir Prof Dr Martyn - such a great person.
Dr. Poliakoff thanks for your dedication and maintaining an excitement for your field of endeavor - it's catchy!
Prof. Martin is an inspiration for me and I guess many others.
What an interesting person! He has a great way of explaining things.
TV ads response was quite surprising. But then I can totally see him being absorbed in creating wacky ads.
If the world would have more people like Sir Martyn Poliakoff it would be so much better. One of the most remarkable person you could ever meet.

Why?
Because of his hair,I guess.

Probably because this was recorded 8 years ago
Wow Martyn is really inspirational! I hope one day to attend one of his lectures!
"don't try to distill alcohol yourself! it's dangerous!... but I did it when I was younger..." lol
I remember synthesizing Et2O when I started chemistry in my undergrad years...
Professor? Sir. Preach, reverend! Spread the faith.
Met professor Poliakoff today, got to shake his hand and had a picture taken with him. :D

Honored to carry his name. Love you Martyn. From Martin
In his case the iodine is replaced by yttrium
I just searched up Martyn's Grandfather and discovered he had the same birthday as me, the 24th of April.
I'm guessing that it would be a lecture I would actually turn up for!

@puretroubleman this is because in the fishing nets, they need lead to hold it in place coz its dense enough, cheap and not reactive with sea water.
Martyn, you would be GREAT at TV adverts!!! Especially for 2011 The International Year of Chemistry.
It's your personality that has a made you famous,! Good show!
I would be an honor to attend to one of Martyn's lectures!
7 dislikes from professors who wants to have the same nerdy haircut but cant

@tonyngjichun No, I think someone hit it by mistake. Who could dislike the professor?
Get an hd camera ,professiori
why on earth would anyone dislike this video!?
I get to do so every Monday at 11am.
Can I buy that lamp anywhere?
I stained myself with potassium permanganate too when I was little, and experimented a lot with chemicals. :)

@iNinja85 BUT, when you get a job as a chemist, you'll probably realize it's ridiculously boring, unless you're a professor.
@aeroscope why are fishermen being exposed to lead?
