It would be cool to conceal these into solar-powered garden lights then give them to friends to put into balcony pots. They get nice light you get comms.

That is cool idea. They are small enough they could integrated into lots of things.

I've been noodling on coming up with hook/loop (not velcro) mounting ideas for urban applications. Like putting a big aluminum shepherd hook onto the back of the box and using a painters extension pole to hang them from street lights, billboard frameworks, etc. The goal is to make it easy to put up but also easy to take down for inevitable maintenance. I've also been coming up with ways to do it much higher, via drone.

@@innercityprepper Drone drops are a really cool idea.

@@ElectricityTaster drop is the easy (relative) part -- getting it down for maintenance is the big challenge. I'm trying to think of a good way (or ways) to have something be droppable, strong enough mounting to handle sustained winds etc, and still be pick-up-able with the node completely dead/unresponsive.
I'm thinking some sort of "disposable" magnet-based rotary toggle lock that you can stick to a pole or something? It's still in development (aka I have no idea yet what to do)

@@innercityprepper Look at how the Canada arm on the ISS grabs stuff. It seems like the easiest solution. You could even make the grabbing pin part of the antenna.

Hi, your video was a suggestion after I watched a video by knoxieman who built a node into a $10 solar light. I used the same solar light node but used a RAK board instead of the Heltec and it's been running is the dull UK weather and has stayed at 85% battery for a month without any intervention. I thought you might be interested.

I have seen Knoxieman video, what a outstanding project. I am definitely interested in a similar build. Thanks for the feedback.

Most antennas require a ground plane to function well. I used metal tape. Line the inside of the box, at least 1/4 wavelength on each side of the antenna connector, 2 sides is fine. That’s about 3.5” for the 900mhz US band. More tape won’t hurt.

Great point, I will give that a try on my next build.

All the screws supplied with those "wing" style black cases show signs of rust within a few weeks

They must be only plated not stainless steel.
