The final verse is incredibly profound, especially the last two lines. The enemy is not the soldier on the other side. The enemies are the rich, the elite and the politicians on both sides who willingly send others to their death for their own enrichment.

It's written from the perspective of a dying soldier at the Falkland Island war. Home to him now is he won't live to see his valley farm. He says farewell at the end saying we are fools to make war on our brothers in arms. Key line is "there's so many different worlds and so many different suns. We have just one world but we live in different ones.❤

In this song, Mark Knopfler sings about a soldier who is dying on the battlefield, surrounded by his comrades, who remain by his side as he slips away. It's a look at the folly of war and the plight of those who fight them. "We've got just one world but we live in different ones," he told the BBC. "It's just stupid, it really is. We're just foolish to take part in anybody's war." his song was inspired by the Falklands War, which was going on when Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler wrote the song. The Falklands War was a conflict between Argentina and the UK over islands off the coast of Argentina that each country claimed rights to. The islands are British territories, but in 1982 Argentina tried to reclaim one of the islands. Britain reclaimed their territories, but lost 258 soldiers in the conflict. Peace out.

This is probably the worst version possible to listen to 😂. When you are an avid fan and you go to a concert, it’s all good in the moment and the vibe. If you are listening for the first time out of the cold, it’s not really Indicative of the talent and mastery that is Mark Knofler and Dire Strait

Although it was written in 85, the song is about the Falklands Conflict in 82.
This was a conflict between Argentina (the dictatorship invaded the islands - unfortunately, the UK claimed ownership and when the islanders asked for assistance, the PM - Maggie Thatcher - answered by sending a fleet of warships 8,000 miles to take them back. There was a lot of "discussion" about why because of the distance and the fact that nothing much happened on these islands except sheep farming.)
Looking back I can see why she responded in this way. We were having a miners strike and a recession and she was getting very unpopular. We were "successful" in retaking the Falklands and so her approval among the British electorate was immensely improved, as was the reputation of the UK as a whole.
Although I don't like conflict, I have to say that the Falklands were a proving ground for three things. The Harrier Jump-jet, the Sea-Wolf Anti-missile missile and the Excorcet.

This guitar-sound is just so instantly recognizable. And not just this song (definitely that one, too) but every song when the guitar sets in, people in the know KNOW this is going to be Dire Straits/Knopfler. I am not versed enough with instruments as to why it's so unique - just the type of guitar? Or also something he did to it specifically that it sounds this specific? I dont know but it's for sure *something!

The visual quality is absolutely terrible, but the sound holds up really well, and you get to hear Knopflers extended guitar solo at the end of the song, which really sells it for me.

IMHO, We humans are so new on the evolutionary scale, we are still primitive cavemen fearful and greedy, trapped in the illusion of scarcity and need. Whenever I hear someone say that to talk of peaceful coexistence is a fantasy or the domain of dreamers, xI feel compassion for them, for they haven't yet developed the "being" part of humanity. Those that use their eyes as the only sense in interpreting their world view, forget that they eyes are limited in what they capture, and what they display as fact in our brain.
My view is often clouded by what my expectation is. A common belief is that the "eyes don't lie". We must remember that we are unable to see the full light spectrum and that the intensity of light, the shadows we observe, dust, sun, smoke, soot and many other distractions, change the way we see things, and sometimes our absolute assuredness' that what we see is what others see, blinds our perception... perhaps when we focus in and combine our senses we use the least with our being we alter what is possible in our world.
The practice of being love, being compassionate, being generous. being kind, being equanimous, being joyful, being honest, and being authentic in our interactions with others cam go along ways in ushering in the world of abundance and peace, which most of us desire to exist here and now. ' 'Us and Them' Is the illusion of which we lose ourselves in allowing our egos to drive our behavior. According to my DNA results I am related to everyone and every living thing on this planet. We are fools to make war on our brothers in arms,

Why did you cut the song off with about a third of it left? It is a stunningly beautiful song, but this was a horror of a version of it (even though I wanted to hear the whole thing). Mark Knopfler is an amazing guitarist, but he was just being self indulgent and showing off which completely messed up the flow of the song. As for the vocals, he was slurring the words so badly I could barely understand him. I'm sorry I'm complaining, but I've been listening to this song & album since 1985 when it first came out & I'm just really disappointed. Please, please react to the studio version as I I know you'll be absolutely blown away!

It's an incredibly difficult song to sing for anyone who has a speck of humanity inside them. He wrote the song and knows what every word in the song represents. Look at any live version and you can see he is almost overcome with emotion. He's a Scot and we are an emotional race. It's what makes this song such a powerful statement against war.

    • @jo.s7993
      @jo.s7993 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@williamgeorgefraser Oh lucky me! There's nothing I love more than a bit of mansplaining! I saw Dire straits at Wembley in 85 & twice in 91 at Wembley & the NEC. He managed to sing it absolutely fine without ever coming close to being emotionally overcome & we were within the first three rows each time so had a good view of him. I'd say Romeo & Juliet (about Mark having his heart broken for real) & Telegraph Road seemed harder emotionally for him. MK may have written BIA's but anybody with a "speck of humanity" understands each & every word written. I was only 13 & can remember where I was & what I was doing when I heard about HMS Sheffield getting hit in the Falklands. I spoke to a Royal Marine Bandsman the following year & they acted as "stretcher bearers". He looked so haunted & back then PTSD wasn't a thing. MK's family moved from Glasgow to just outside Newcastle when he was a small boy & he considers himself to be a Geordie (sorry!). I'm half Irish/half Manx so could give you a run for your money when it comes to emotions!

It's a shame that your knocking the table is being picked up by the mic - super annoying.

It's almost never a good idea to listen to a live version of a song the first time you hear it. Live versions are foremost for people who know the band and the song and don't mind some improvisation, sloppy playing etc.

Agree. I even don’t like people recomending Sultans of swing Alchemy for first time listeners. It’s a very good version, but you can truly enjoy it only if you know the song. That’s why I can’t watch most of the reactions on this chanel.

I don't know. I think listenign to the live version can give you an estimate about the actual musical talent of the musicians. Can they play the song? Can they sing without playback? Do they know their lyrics?
Sure, it takes sometimes away from the pleasure because we all want to believe our favorites are great live and hearing that theyre not is a bit of a letdown.
But this version is really good, I think, and so was the Cranberries' song.
and I will account for some live-versions being unfair because maybe the song was at the end of a concert and the voice was gone, or the singer was tired etc. But in general, I've come to enjoy the live-reactions.

@@frizzlethecat2084 It usually doesn't give an adequate picture. Metallica is a good example of this. They are very talented musicians (well, more so in the 80's than now, but that's beside the point), but they usually favor the show over musicianship. They run around on stage, headbang etc. and while it makes it entertaining to watch, it makes their playing less accurate. This doesn't matter to the fans who know their music already, but for someone who's hearing it for the first time it makes it a lot harder to get into their actual songs.
Same with bands who tend to improvise a lot. You may be impressed by their musicianship, but it often is detrimental to the actual songs.
Of course, there are bands who actually manage to keep a good balance and pull off live versions that are on par with the studio recordings as well. But in general, I always advise new listeners to go for the studio versions of songs they haven't heard before.

@@roaringviking5693 Hm, okay, I get your point. I may just be getting some kind of Stockholm syndrome from always watching MrLBoyd react to the live-version and I'm starting to accept it as my new normal 😁

i love your reactions, but why do you always pick the worst version of every song you do. its not hard, try looking at the views might help you a bit. your knowledge is good and your understanding of the songs is as well. please find a decent version of the song.

Did you just do what I think you did? You didn't just cut off the song just before the most emotional instrumental solos of all times, especially in this version? How dare you? I'm so disappointed right now, I don't even know what to say. If you are just interested in the lyrics, then read the fucking lyrics and don't even bother with the music. If anyone ever deserved a dislike on YT, this is it. There is no excuse for what you have done.
