    You are lucky guy :) To avoid accidential damage during assembly I recommend (next time) to plug power connection and turn power ON last, not first ;). I have one Idea to realize in cooperation with Look Mum No Computer: to put synth cartridge and midi interface together on one board and make new cartridge without expander board (final result should be like mssiah cart). This should solve many problems with loosing connections on stage. Alternative way is solder two carts directly to c=64 board, put extra boards inside and put midi sockets to c=64 back side. I hope my English is understandable ;) Greetings from Poland :)

    One thing to consider, is make sure all your signal grounds are connected together. You would also probably better off with one common supply feeding everything. But, in the world of analog electronics, you're about to enter a world where simply moving your hand over components can capacitively couple and change the circuits behavior.
    On your display module, make sure all the grounds there are connected together as well.
    Good luck this is a cool project!

    Breadbin case can hold both the long and short motherboards... need the extra height of the of the breadbin for the mods of course. I fixed an uncountable number of them back in the late 80's when I had my own repair shop in the back of a software store. Power is 5VDC and 9VAC on all C64 power supplies. With the extra SID chip and the cartridges, I wouldn't push a stock C64 power supply much more. Maybe not a good idea to try and power the control panel with the 9VAC unless it has it's own bridge rectifier.
    Edit: Yeah the C64 does distort, I'm not sure if it's it's own pre-amp which is just a transistor, or actually coming from the SID. But I suspect a mod using an actual pre-amp chip would improve it quite a bit.

  • @alexsperi
    @alexsperi 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Claudio, it's good to see that the C64 project is going on! From the images I see that you have a "ceramic" vic II chip on your breadbin. While these are a little bit uncommon revisions, they are also a little bit worse in video performance and signal "isolation". Usually newer revisions could manager better interferences. Sadly the vic II chip video output is mixed with audio output inside the "tin rf box" and from there is splitted again to the back connectors. This of course means that your problems could arise also inside the rf box (could be bad filtering capacitors or something else). The fact that you are also "losing" color could be related to the fact that someway you lose the chroma signal and the only output is luma.
    Let me know if you need some more specific info!

  • @Madusch
    @Madusch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Do what Sam said and adjust the potentiometers on the Lumafix. It might help you with the distortion. Refer to the manual of the Lumafix on how to adjust it properly.

    • @tassadar1977
      @tassadar1977 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think he should replace the VIC chip with another one.

    • @tassadar1977
      @tassadar1977 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mr Guru I use the Lumafix with the (later) VIC chip on my C64c with the luma/chroma signal into my 1084 monitor. I feel it's the best possible video output possible. The Lumafix REALLY cleans up the signal further. The board Dr Mix bought doesn't have sVideo, composite only, sadly. While he could get a converter to go from svideo to VGA, that's going to look like crap too.

  • @DigitalFacts
    @DigitalFacts 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The thing with composite signal is that it mixes the chroma (color information) and the luma (brightness information) signal into one signal of less quality. Apart from that, the C64 outputs way too much signal on the chroma line where most moderen displays got problems showing a clean signal. Usually you get much better results (sharp and clear picture) when connecting a C64 via S-Video (this is Chroma and Luma signal separated) to a display that supports it. If your chinese display board supports SVideo you should order an appropriate cable for connection. Most of those cables also come with a resistor of 100k attached to the Chroma line so that the colors look way better on modern displays.

    C64's were not designed to go into composite unless you have the original 1701 or 1702. The refresh rate and the scan lines was very specific on commodore monitors. I personally used the TV VHF modulator that came with the C64. It had a 2 way switch on it TV / Computer. It was actually on the back of the VCR because I used to record my game playing on VHS. the best way to get around this on a modern flat screen is to get an old proc amp and adjust the scan lines/ refresh rate until it's dialed in just right.

    Claudio - as a former hacker from way back one thing I might suggest regarding your monitor being black and white and distorted. I would suggest trying a new cable from the computer to the monitor. The effects you are getting are similar to when I have had composite cables have a loose connection on the sleeve part of the RCA video cable. Just a thought

    There’s also a new PSY that has C64 and 1541 power. That definitely gives enough power to power a 5V composite screen from that 1541 PSU. Beware there 5V and 12V there too. And you can get these from a guy from Poland. For 59 euros!
    I got one recently. If you wanna know the exact name of then let me know. I’ll dig up the invoice.
    Oh 9:45 Sam brings that dual power supply up. That’s dual because it powers the C64 and the 1541 from a single brick.

    That cartridge connector looks fragile... Also was the commodore 64 absolutely needed for the SID to be used, cause there is really nothing special about C64's, the CPU itself wasn't even a legitimate CPU, its was a BUS controller and is said to also be a RISC chip meaning it doesn't have all the components of a full CPU.. That maybe it had some operations substituted.. RISC chips traditionally have a small instruction set with some operations hardwired (but I don't suppose they have to) and the rest of the processor dominated by memory so that extra operations can be emulated quickly with essential operations that run as fast as microcode. The RISC processor used in the PowerPC's was supposed to emulate the Motorola 68000 and intel 8086 selectively which was a selling point of those computers. The Motorola's albeit slower than the Intel line eventually, was said to have a object oriented style of assembly language. I was trained on the 8086, so I can't imagine.. The Apple IIgs had a Ensoniq 15 voice mirage sampler chip in it, but only 64K of memory for samples, and the computer itself was Apple II compatible and use a 4Mhz 6502 compatible processor. It was sold to be competition for the Amiga, but was a serious let down. Especially if you've heard music made with its Ensoniq chip. I may be incorrect on a lot of this as I'm going bassed on my own recall memory. I'm a ex-Amiga/C64 user.. I have a vic=2o a week, then was told Montgomery Ward in America was going to sell the C64 for $200, and I and my brother bought one each. At the time it was quite a deal. But the Amiga made it look quite archaic.. A jump technologically as the C64 would be to a Atari 2600, which is what I had for years before I had a computer. Sometime after I got an Amiga I bought a Roland MT-32, which I thought was cool until I learned of the limits of the muti-timbre polyphony.. Its nowhere near as nice as a D-50 it was modeled after.

  • @Shadownrun2
    @Shadownrun2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    the "lumafix" is bad indeed, that "distortion" is most probably just noise in the signal, probably because the wires are all over the place on your table, I bet that will get better once you put it in the case
