      I control my population as low as possible until I complete of my palace area. As I generate much more trade income than tax. Without complete palace, tax can never support Mable import. Also I produce just a bit extra food and slowly fill up extra granary for the final boost for population.

    This game is better than alot of modern city builders. There's something about the 2d era, beyond nostalgia. They just look and feel better in 2d and somehow are far more immersive

      I genuinely think it's because of the detail in the graphics, but for Caesar 3, a big part of the immersion for me is the music.

      I was thinking about this a lot.
      In 2d graphics at every given time, every pixel you see is planned, one way or another , with 3d its hard to design for every angle. Very hard to make it top notch.
      Other thing, Isometric view, 2d view is flattend so its much more easy to see every detail , in 3d lot of things perspective really make the silluets details inconsistent.
      Look at AoE2 vs AoE4

    I loved this city. I used to play it back in the beginning and have redone it a few times. I made this with over 10,000. I think I got it north of 12,000 with a stable city. The Palace block was in the middle, with grand insula areas on either side. Farmed to the max and used the islands for fishing. Early, I focused on industry and trade for money until I could get the luxury palaces going, and then tax revenue provided stable income. I enjoy your videos. Fun to see this game still being played. In fairness, I would spend many days working on it.

      Thx to your video I gave it another try, the challenge is to break even on taxes vs wages, also I split all villa's, docks and production chains chains from the general populous. Two big food zones; the villa's vs the populous (only fish). Then you can import grain (just for the villa's) and pottery will never go to the plebs. Fruit from the islands was also only used for the villa's. Then you overproduce fish and fruit, which you can export.

    Sorry for the double post, but I struggled watching this lol. Use small casas to get a medium palace block setup immediately with an Arena and Tavern. Use 2-3 warehouses a piece for clay and olives to massively boost production of pottery and oil set to receive only 8. One cart pusher cannot support all of those factories so the efficiency is way down. Tents to build military sand food -> small casas to build medium palaces, then lighthouse, then import marble. Also, you only need 2-4 factories of pottery/oil to feed palaces until you’re ready to boost the plebs. 3 farms of each type and 3 warves will feed 6 palaces handsomely. When the medium palaces are full, import the marble you need for monuments like lighthouse (first), caravan, and hippodrome. Patience is a virtue. 😊

  • @mitchcroskell8665
    @mitchcroskell8665 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I wholeheartedly agree with your sentiments that playing this mission on Augustus definitely makes things much more challenging. I found this to be the case on a few different maps. Is obviously the case on maps where you have to import marble since the cost to do so is so prohibitively expensive and time consuming.
    I also ran into difficulties with building monuments when having to import clay. My main problem with this being that monument construction doesn’t usually start until the city is a fair ways into its lifespan, and thus there is usually a pretty substantial pottery industry relying on said imported clay and lots of housing that requires it to exist in its current state. Thus, when the clay starts going towards the monument instead (I think I remember the hippodrome taking 46 clay, so basically two years of imports), you can get into a vicious cycle situation where everything starts devolving due to lack of pottery, which then causes huge unemployment, which then causes even more production problems…with everything just compounding upon itself to create ever increasing difficulties!

  • @bazcuda
    @bazcuda 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Pottery: IMHO, instead of having 1 warehouse accepting 32 clay you would have been better off having e.g. 4 warehouses accepting 8 clay. The one cartpusher from your 1 warehouse only delivers one 100 cartload of clay at a time to your pottery workshops. He can't keep up with supplying so many workshops. Better to split the task between e.g. 4 warehouses. I suspect a lot of your pottery workshops have been idle because of lack of clay, despite your warehouse being full of it. It's another interesting difficulty that the Augustus mod has introduced 😀
    This also means you should have your workshops as close as possible to any warehouse which is accepting imported raw materials, to reduce the distance the one cartpusher has to travel to keep the workshops stocked up.

    My most entertaining city in Caesar III was when my population was so large I collected so much in tax that I didn’t need to export anything. Also Caesar’s army as we know would arrive from a certain area location. I constructed a gauntlet with towers at that location and with javelins I would annihilate Caesar’s army, so I never had to please Caesar with anything. I reached over 1million in money if I remember correctly. I only constantly pleased the gods and the people festivals.

    I found this superrrr challenging playing with Augustus 3.0
    I found that to make it stable, I could not upgrade the plebs housing to insulae, only remain at small casa so as not to deal with pottery/clay consumption disruption issue when I build the hippodrome. For me the challenge was food consumption in the patrician forced walker loop since very limited farms available and I didnt construct the ceres GT. I had to prep 4 granaries and 6 markets to satisfy 13 luxury palaces
    Also, with augustus, I dont build Colloseum anymore, since Arena cover the gladiator requirement of max house plebs and hippodrome is a must for luxury palaces.

  • @lukelilienkamp2831

    Whenever I have to import raw materials to manufacture i.e. clay to pottery, I use 2 warehouses both set to 16 clay and 16 pottery. Because in ceasar 3 industries do not gather their own resources they must be delivered, so with only 1 warehouse cart pusher trying to supply like 10 workshops they can't keep up. Its also a bad idea to try and use 1 warehouse to distribute more than one raw material for the same reason.

    • @lukelilienkamp2831
      @lukelilienkamp2831 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you notice, when some of your pottery workshops finish, they sit idle for a bit before the cart pusher brings them more clay, since thier own cart pusher only delivers goods, and does not go get raw materials.

    Funny thing, did not know where to "report" it so here will do, as it has to do with C3.
    When having a map that contains a river, like the one with the earthquake, and you bridge over the river twice (two bridges, both ship bridges, about 20 or so tiles apart or less, did not try it with bigger distance) AND have a shiyard between them, it cannot build fishing ships for wharves placed outside the space defined by the bridges. (does this make sense? You can understand what I am saying?). It CAN build ships for wharves between the bridges but none for outside ones. Not sure if this is a bug or proper behavior, it keeps reporting that "Fishing boats cannot navigate". The problem is solved if you place another shiyard outside the bridges, on the side your wharves are.
    If this is not normal, can the Augustus team please make a note for a future update? It IS annoying, that message popping up every 1-2 months, and having to have multiple shipyards to accomodate a decent number of wharves...just saying. If it is normal, I will make a note for future maps, if not, someone that CAN do something about it may look into it?
    P.S. Same thing did occur when I placed 18 wharves, practically side by side, further up the same river but this time there were NO bridges nearby! Shipyard at the end of the "row" refused to send ships out, when moved to a more "central" location all was fine!

    About the Caravans, they do not turn around, but there will always be a spawn of 3 caravans from each trading partner on your map, so, if they leave fast, they will spawn fast again too.
    Also, when you dropped to 10, why choose a single send-off and not a double, it would award 10/5 from both shipments.
    Why not tax the people early game?
    Why not tax villa's with the Senate, so you also boost desirability?
    If villa's claim not enough variety, you need not only theaters, but also more training centers.
    You are always broke, due to the high wages.
    In the endgame, pottery is not your issue, the frequency of runs for food is, the market lady does not have enough time to shop pottery. Store more fish.
    Why you choose to keep importing wine lategame? Just block off imports with your own wine.
    Consideration for the future; design your cities populous in non-pottery houses, then you can expert all pottery and oil non stop, outside the villas.

      There's no difference between original Caesar 3 and Augustus when it comes to the variety of cities that can be built. In my first original Caesar 3 playthrough, I just did 9x9 blocks every mission and won. Augustus doesn't change anything in that regard, why do you think every city looks simple and synthetic?

    • @p0pka_enota
      @p0pka_enota 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@GamerZakh First, there's no "wrong" way of playing it. It's just my vision. But why do I see it simple and synthetic is probably because of the road blocks. It's a killer feature. If you break down this city, it's all done of straight pieces of road with blocks on the ends and everything that block might need is inside. That's why I call it simple and synthetic. And also static cause there's no chance of catching fire, damages, simple food and goods distribution. So "random" effects are only limited to rebellions, since everything else is scripted.
      I'm not an expert in C3, but I guess in vanilla you cannot separate the city completely or at least it's much more complicated/inefficient.
      P.S. I know that gates work as a roadblock.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@p0pka_enota Ah well yeah gates work as roadblocks, so it's just whether you choose to use them or not. If you choose to not use gatehouses as roadblocks, then you can just choose to not use roadblocks. I played original Caesar 3 using gatehouses everywhere, so roadblocks don't really change anything. It's just whether you want to use them or not. You can separate the city in vanilla no problem too. It's easy and pretty much the same efficiency as in Augustus.

    You really should make room for a tavern, if supplied with both wine and fish you do not need the Hippodrome (at least TRY IT!).

    Re-calculate please! It is not only 3500 for the Hippodrome, that's just to place it down. The real "fun" begins right after you do that!
    ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY EIGHT pieces of marble (at 250 a piece, as I believe you are paying right now) that is 32,000 in gold, just for the marble and NOT counting the years it will take to accumulate all that marble by importing 25 a year (SIX years, as five leaves you 3 marble short!!) - actually, the long wait might help as it spreads the financial strain over more years!
    Just spam a few Arenas too, if ALL your venues show "Perfect" coverage I believe you will be good!
    Or, you can use multiple taverns on your palaces, maybe THAT will do it - all I know is that you CAN get LPs without the Hippodrome.

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes it helps a lot. What you can check for with wharves is, are the boats sitting at the wharves? If yes, it means the fish are stuck at the wharves and not going into your city, and the boat will wait there until they can get rid of the fish, meaning the wharves aren't working at maximum efficiency.

      As we are right on the verge of winning, a few thoughts on this playthrough, the new version of Augustus and the game in general. (just my $.02, if anyone cares)
      1. Augustus made some things way easier (global labor pool, roadblocks, Grand Temples, Lighthouse and Caravanserai) but others way way harder (even a mere Oracle now needs marble, as it did before, AND Architects AND a Work Camp AND they need to be place reasonably close with a road connection!!). Luxury Palaces now are a true challenge, as they should be.
      2. Zakh is a perfectionist, we know that and we love him for that. I could never devote the time and effort like he does for "small details" like decorations, proper placement of each and every building, micro management of every tiny aspect, it is simply too much for me! Sometimes the result is a sight to behold, some other times (not many, Zakh's skill takes care of that) he makes things way too difficult on himself. He does listen and appreciates an idea if it is any good, sometimes he even follows ideas that are not so good, just to test the waters - hey, we all learn something every time we see him struggle, no? This is one of the things no mod can change, thank God for that! (when an atheist thanks "god", you can take that to the bank!!)
      3. The game DID get a boost, or some would say a kick in the behind, with Augustus, moreso with the last update! It is, in many aspects, a new game. Thanks to the team that developed it as it did way more than just revamp how an old game looks - it changed core elements! Removing the population bug, from "very hard", did not make the game easier, all the other things that got tweaked make the game harder, now "very hard" IS very hard indeed! We expect more in the coming update(s), if any.
      4. This particular mission (and I expect its military counterpart, Lindum, that follows) now feels truly like the LAST and, therefore, hardest mission. Kudos to Zakh for building that monster of a thing, that Hippodrome, on a map with so limited resources - I wouldn't attempt it for the world! There should be some way to alleviate some of the financial pressure (or, convince Zakh not to aim for the highest of goals every time? Nah, who would want THAT?), perhaps another consideration for a future Augustus update? (you guys made making money almost impossible on "very hard", maybe give us some "painful" way of making some extra money, like selling slaves or gladiators? Not politically correct but it WAS the norm back then...)
      5. Anxiously awaiting the last mission, I know it will be a "win" but I am curious to see how it happens. Lindum has some BIG invasions early on...
      P.S. I must re-test it but I know LPs can be achieved without a Hippodrome IF you have tavern(s) at full effect (wine + meat/fish). Not sure if it is multiple venues, entertainer schools, global coverage or a combo of those but I know it can be done!
      P.P.S. Now that I remembered, on maps with BOTH fish AND pigs, the pigs do not show on special orders of granaries, warehouses, taverns. Was that on purpose or something "fell through a crack", so to speak?

  • @croitzy338

    I don't understand. Do market ladies ignore roadblocks?

    • @GamerZakh
      @GamerZakh  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Walkers with a specific destination in mind ignore roadblocks. They also ignore gatehouses. So an actor from an actor colony going to a theatre, cart pushers going to a granary or warehouse, soldiers walking to towers, along with any walker going back to their original building will ignore roadblocks and gatehouses. If there isn't a specific destination then they are 'wandering' walkers, and those are blocked by roadblocks and gatehouses.

    Since your main food source is fish, and you can grow vines, shouldn't it be beneficial to setup a small wine industry when possible and supply taverns instead of other forms of entertainment? You CAN get the full benefit in this map without going out of your way.
    [Edit: Yes, soldiers can get by on fish alone on this one, food is really in short supply, except fish.]

    If you're looking for a challenge then one thing you could try is defending your city from Caesar's legions on the very first map. It seems impossible since you don't have any solders or walls or watch towers or, hell, even aqueducts. But I know it possible because I've done it. I was just trying to get caesar to attack me on that map to see if I could do it. Well I just happened to build some tents into some trees and the pathfinding for the solders isn't very good so they couldn't really reach the tents. Meanwhile, the prefecture was attacking the invaders. Of course he died but another one spawned. Repeat this several times. Eventually the solders found the path around took me down. I tried a few more times but eventually was able to get the solders that hadn't died to retreat.
