- For the final half of our Finland trip, Tor and I ventured up to Lapland where we got to play in the snow with reindeer, dogs, elves, and the Northern Lights. Plus, we may or may not have made a surprise visit to the Game of Thrones ice hotel! Check out our funny video from our Lappish adventures for more!

I've been watching Lapland videos all night. My great-grandmother was from Ylitornio and immigrated to the US when she was still a teenager. I'm too poor to ever leave my country, so I live vicariously through these videos with tears in my eyes. I wish Lapland was my home.
This is so peaceful to watch. It's great to watch before bed because the music is relaxing, the scenery is beautiful and I can pretend to be on vacation right before I go to sleep. (and I mean that as a compliment, not that I'm bored)

I basically lived in Lapland for 3 years. Only once I flew from Rovaniemi to Helsinki. I'm from the southern Finland. Mostly I took the train from Kemijärvi. The landscape anywhere in the North is breath-taking any time of the year. In winter really cold for sure.
Can’t wait until I get the chance to go! Definitely on my list of places I’d like to visit. Looks so beautiful and peaceful

A short visit to winter wonderland. As long as you don't have to live there you can enjoy the fantasy in design hotels and skiing resorts.
The design hotels are there for the northern lights. You have to be in the middle of nowhere with a view, for experiencing them in their full glory.
Then again they are built to Finnish standards, so no much difference compared to a local finns house or cabin. (Yes most of us have a second house, a cabin either in the Lake Finland or in the Archipelago. Or in Lapland.)
The ski resorts are definitely for the locals and for the sport, so not only for tourists.
Reindeers are livestock, there is thousands of them. No difference compared to cows in Finland.
A snowscooter is a tool in Lapland and a hobby in southern Finland.
Dogs and huskies are a hobby for many in Finland, also in the south.
Sled rides down hill is what every single child in this country does, every winter.
Every single house or cabin has a sauna!
So actually the only fantasy here is the Santa Claus Park. But hey, our children believe in it too! At least during Christmas. :-)

Don't go to see nothern lights. Because you might not see them, and then you get disapointed. Go to see Lapland, and if the lights appear, they do. What you need for the northern lights, is a plasma cloud from the Sun to hit Earth, a geomagnetic storm, that is called. And it's only a few times a year there is one enough to produce proper northern lights, maybe couple of times a year to have a bright pehenomena. Without a proper geomagnetic storm you might see some green glowwith the corner of your eyes.

Theres usually snow at least towards the end of november and also the temperature should be well below 0 degrees.
Spring-winter is the best period for weather. But of course Christmas is a big thing in the tourist traps.
