- Winspit Quarry DORSET - Winspit is a disused quarry on the cliffs near Worth Matravers in the Isle of Purbeck, Dorset, England. To the west and east are the hills of West Man and East Man.
Until around 1940 Winspit was used as a stone quarry, providing stone for buildings in London. During World War II it was used as a site for naval and air defences. After the war the caves were opened to the public.[citation needed]
The quarry is now a lesser-known tourist attraction. Recently many of Winspit's caves have been closed off for public safety and bat conservation
Winspit Quarry and caves were used as a location for the planet Mecron II in the Blake's 7 episode "Games", and in Doctor Who they were used in the story "The Underwater Menace", and then as the planet Skaro in the serial "Destiny of the Daleks", the quarry's stone cottage and two other larger buildings, (which were just empty derelict shells, with their roofs missing), were used in "Destiny", they were transformed into the external ruins of the long abandoned Dalek city and disused Kaled Bunkers. Later for the 2012 Disney film John Carter it was used as the scene location for the "Orkney Dig".
In May 2021 the quarry was used for a location shoot for the forthcoming Star Wars television series Andor.

Brings back grand memory when l was in country. Went with ZZ9 on visit in country where they filmed some of the Douglas Adams stuff. With ford frick. Went with Davies believe he was an illustrator.

I want to the original filming site of the 1977 Star Wars in Jerba, Tunisia! Right out in the middle of no where was well worth it though, I definitely recommend seeing it..

Was in Dorset for my holiday this year wanted to go there and visit but didn't have enough time. which was a shame as really wanted to explore winspit.didn't realize doctor who destiny of the daleks was filmed there will have to get that again and watch it as it's a great story. didn't know Blake's seven was filmed there aswell as star wars definitely planning to go back and explore winspit this time next visit to Dorset

It was killing me when I saw this location on Andor as to where I had seen it before, BIG Doctor Who fan here, it’s that Destiny Of The Daleks quarry isn’t it? I knew I’d seen those odd square ‘caves’ before somewhere.

Matt I'm afraid you missed the interesting stuff. You walked right past 3 deep mines in the undergrowth just before the main quarry. At least one has the grid broken so you can walk into. This quarry is public access and full of people walking in the summer, however Slightly east there are 2 similar sites that arent and make a better explore. In addition in that whole area were hundreds of steep shafts going into underground workings, if you know where to look, you can still step down into some without climbing gear. And as others have said you are deep into Dorset lol. About 2 hours drive from Devon lol. Cheers Gary
You need to make a film there. Sounds like you know where it all is. I always mix up my Dorset and Devons... doh.
There is also a cottage at the bottom which is abandoned, Winspit house. My grandma was sent to live there during the evacuation in ww2.

All purbeck stone as used to live in Poole and worked as a stone mason 👍

you missed a bit on the main path on the way out on the right hand side is a cave with a mettle grid on it you can see it is a mine but cant go in because of bats
