Gyromite is one of two video games designed for use with the Robotic Operating Buddy (R.O.B.), the other being Stack Up ( tasvideos.org/... ). You control a professor who must clear levels by picking up lighted bundles of dynamite while R.O.B. raises and lowers the red and blue gates.
The author, kirbymuncher ( tasvideos.org/... ), plays through the game as fast as possible with optimized movement and a couple of glitches.

And with a well lubricated and Arduino powered R.O.B., you too CAN knock this game out in less than 30 minutes!

Man I wish my R.O.B. worked better, as a kid I needed a friend to use controller 2 for the assists

I had this as a kid and no ROB, only second-player controller to make the pipes move. Me and my sisters never beat it either, this game was too hard for us at the time.

Man, I only had the Action Set as a kid, but the older kid up the street had the Deluxe Set, and my little mind was BLOWN by his ROB and Gyromite.
Always have a spot in my heart for this one.

@@Stevie-J A factoid is a statement that seems like a fact, but is not actually true. It is not a small interesting fact as many think.

I always liked grabbing the dynamite during the multiple phases, but Game 'B' was interesting too, where your character is sleepwalking and you have to get him to the tent on the other side. Plus, it wasn't timed, which made things a LOT easier :P

I wonder if it would be possible to TAS this game using an actual R.O.B., sending the control commands through the inputs? My guess is that it wouldn't work since there are too many mechanical factors with R.O.B. and the spinning gyros that would result in almost immediate desyncs, but it might be interesting to try.

It could be a fun game if it released as ARCADE, instead of Nintendo R.O.B.

This is one of the few games where using a program to play the game is the intended method of playing it.

Did ROB need to be programmed with a TAS?

    • @mr.dudley3484

nope, this game can be played by two human players
player one moves the character and player two moves the pistons
don't even need a rob actually

Between the "Phase" screen, the scrolling view of the level ahead, and getting points for leftover time upon picking up the final stick of dynamite, ~16 seconds a level is spent with the game not under the player's control. There are 40 stages, each of which has all of that. 16*40 = 640 seconds = 10 mins 40 secs. Almost half of this 23 minute TAS is spent in unskippable cutscenes. Daaamn.

Did this game not have an ending? What happens after beating Stage 40, does it just loop back to Stage 1?

Exactly that, yes. The TAS author's notes on the TASVideos site cover that, link is in the description.

If a bird comes across one they'll start eating it for a while, making them safe to walk past.
