Jeff Beck was a complete original musician. He was always evolving. I loved watching him perform, you could always see the joy in his face as he played. The man loved what he did.
I jammed with Jeff Beck in 2015….we played Blue Wind, and Hey Joe. Before we started Hey Joe, he asked me what was the second section chords he had forgotten! I was thinking damn I just gave Jeff Beck a guitar lesson. When he shook my hand, he faked me out and pulled the cable out of my Strat. Couple years later, I found a video on TH-cam that shows Les Paul doing the same thing to Jeff back when they met on stage. Cheeky bloke. Rest in peace guitar hero. I have a jamming with Prince story too but that’s for another video 😊
I think you are so right. That's the shame of it in a way, but I imagine his family has been very comforted by the outpouring of acknowledgement from the world over. When she was much younger my wife would see him as she lived not far away from him and he could have been anybody. He was completely unassuming.
Got to see Jeff Beck back in 1980 on the There And Back tour. He was one of the greatest back then, but I've never known anyone who was already considered "one of the best" continue to revolutionize the instrument the way he did. This was high school for me, and I was a jazz head bass player and Wired was constantly on my turntable because of the interplay between Jeff and Wilbur Bascomb. As my musical interests grew I reached both back and forward with him. I'd always known about his Cliff Gallup obsessions, but Crazy Legs blew me away hearing him play that. The show linked is part of a residency he did at Ronnie Scott's, and if you've never seen the DVD release from that it shows the breadth of what he can do. I can't say that I have a definitive Beck album now. For me he's a bit like David Bowie, reinventing himself on a regular basis for most of his career before being able to settle in and do anything. I was crushed when I heard he passed in a way I haven't since I heard about Terry Kath, my first guitar hero, back in the 70's. Thanks for sharing, Otis.
Jeff was playing 'stunt guitar' in 1965-66 long before people even heard Hendrix. All on a 1-pickup Esquire! Controlled feedback, using the volume and tone controls as effects, etc. Just a supremely talented guy....
I purchased "Crazy Legs" when it was released and was amazed(not really} at his versatility.Jeff has been my favorite guitarist for over 50 years.I am shocked nad saddened by his untimely passing. R.I.P.
I followed Jeff Beck intensly starting March 1977 with Jeff Beck live with the Jan Hammer group through now! I had heard Jeff 's Yardbird songs on AM radio in the 1960's. I heard a bit of Jeff with BBA. Jeff appeared on Stanley Clarke's Journey to love, 1975. So...I saw Jeff several times, 1980-2014. It wasn't only a concert, it was a spectacular spectacle in guitar playing. Every time I saw him, he had reinvented himself!
The dude was absolutely brilliant. I think he was so advanced from his counterparts. Meaning the other bunch of players that surrounded him. Anyway. He will forever be one of the greats from this little ole planet of ours. My favorite era of his music. Would have to be the early years. I can’t get enough of the yardbirds. Peace to you Jeff. Your journey has just begun.✌️

He's been described as an extremely responsive musician, and a generous one as well, amongst many other distinguishing characteristics. Jeff lived in his mum's house in Demesne Road, Wallington, when he was a teenager, I lived about two or three miles away from him, I was about 16 he was about 18, I used to go round to his house and he sometimes came round to mine, he taught me quite a lot of pull off's and hammer on's, as I was just starting out, he was an absolutely amazing player at that age, and I'm still nowhere near it, but I plod on.
Saw Jeff Beck in Seattle in the late 60’s at the Eagles Ballroom, no seats everyone sat on the floor. He came on stage in blue jeans an a white t-shirt. With his back towards the crowd he played solo for an hour, he had us mesmerized, back then WOW was the word.
Long time Jeff Beck fan. Blow by Blow and Wired were always my favorite albums from Beck and his version of Good Bye Pork Pie Hat takes me on a journey every time I listen to it. Unlike most rock and rollers that came into the spotlight in the 60's, Beck's creativity never stopped expanding. The man never 'settled down' professionally.
Saw Jeff Healy open for Jeff Beck opening for SRV in Toronto awhile back - Healy was a hometown boy made good - JB was full on fusion on fire (not a word spoken until he gave a shoutout to Healy) whoa boy! SRV smoked the place (my second SRV show saw him at Massey Hall in 84) - finally SRV does a couple of encores and then invites a "friend of his" out - JB and SRV proceeded to absolutely fry Freddie King's Goin Down🔥🔥🔥 - the only tune JB played that night that had lyrics - great night goes without saying - sadly none of these legends are with us any more 😞

I got to see Jeff numerous times over the years starting from The Jeff Beck Group that featured Rod the Mod and Ron Wood on bass in a little teen club. It was always a trancendental experience as a guitar player. God Bless you Jeff wherever you are jamming with Jimi and Stevie.

I really enjoyed the second incarnation on the Jeff Beck group with Clive chaman Bob tench cozy pal Max Middleton. That was such a great hybrid of pop jazz and sort of that band's own style. But I also loved blow-by-blow when it came out as anybody you ever owned a guitar did. And I loved Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer. That live openly did is wonderful. And of course his yardbird stint, legendary
I just watched the Jeff Beck show you spoke about. I'm speechless, that might be the most incredible 20 mins of live music I've experienced in decades. Why is it we don't celebrate great musicians until they're gone? Maybe we take too many things in life for granted. I really appreciate the hard work you put into these wonderful stories. I saw him open for Santana once. He blew everyone's minds with a jaw dropping set. The audience was shaking it off and crying for more when Beck exited. Carlos came out praising Beck and acknowledged what had just happened, how the air had been sucked out of the outdoor venue. Then Carlos was begging Beck to come out on stage and jam. Literally begging from the stage, three cheers for Jeff Beck type thing, and for whatever reason Beck didn't come out. I felt bad for Carlos, he said he was on that tour for six weeks and Beck still wouldn't jam w/him. lol. Spinal Tap moment. He and Stevie Ray did a show in Toronto, Jeff Healy opened. It was called the Fire and the Fury Tour. SRV was touring the In Step album and Beck was on the Guitar Shop Tour. Outrageous show. Terry Bozzio was drumming w/Beck. He got better with age as his right hand developed a mind of it's own. Every time he toured he added dynamic musicians and warped out into new styles. The last time I saw him was in 2011 and that was the best concert I've ever seen. He did How High the Moon on that Gretsch and Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the Strat. He had Merle Haggard or Stevie Wonder level cool/class. Jeff was big on Chet/Les/Cliff Gallup...Roy Buchanan Cause We've Ended as Lovers is as close to a human voice as a guitar can get. He was the gold standard.
wish that show with Stevie was 10 yrs later.i remember the sound being horrible.stadium shows have gotten so much better all those amazing musicians deserved a better venue
Saw Jeff numerous times and saw the tour where he opened for Santana. It was at Starplex in Dallas. That was a a rare time that I think Carlos had more energy than Beck that night. Beck is by far still the best I have ever seen. Playing in heaven for God now.
@@tommilks3043 He opened once for BB King and didn't jam with BB. It would seem obvious that they'd do something together but it didn't happen. They jammed on TV in the lead up to the tour but when I saw them Beck didn't appear in BB's set.
@@bradc32 For sure. When I saw them it was at Skydome Toronto and I think it was the first show where they converted the stadium into a smaller indoor venue with a thing called the Sky tent. I remember the sound being pretty rough. SRV was on overload though
I had they great privilege to see Jeff Beck twice-once in the late ‘70s, then again just a few years ago. Both times, he played his ass off. At the ‘70s show, he came out for 3 or 4 encores, each time it seemed he was so amazed that the crowd was digging him so much. The more recent show, he was touring with Buddy Guy. Guy opened, then came back later and played a few numbers with Jeff and his band-awesome expedience. IMHO, of all the ‘60s/‘70s era “Rock Guitar Gods”, Jeff was the only one who kept evolving, pushing the envelope of what can be done with a guitar, growing as an artist. The world has lost an irreplaceable musician. If you haven’t already, search TH-cam for his performances at Ronnie Scott’s. That will give you some idea of what he was capable of doing. RIP Jeff Beck
Over the years I saw Jeff Beck maybe a dozen times. Recently, I found a few torn off ticket stubs from back in the day and one was from Jeff Beck sharing the bill with the Mahavishnu Otchestra at Hofstra University on Long Island. The price was $6.50!! Probably the most memorable show was Jeff and Stevie Ray back in the '89 at Maddison Square Garden and it was billed as the "Fire Meets the Fury" tour. BTW, I was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin back in '69-'71 and I believe that the base is now the municipal airport.

He waa a Chameleon. He did right on Les Paul with Imelda May after he died. Cliff Gallup and yet he defined futuristic sounds that people can't duplicate.
Jeff Beck was an astounding musician, a conversationalist really with the guitar as his voice. His relative uniqueness in his field of endeavor, leaving aside his musicianship, was that he remained a force even as most of his contemporaries were aging out. He continually explored the musical terrain with new artists. I daresay he brought the likes of a young bassist phenom, female Aussie bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, to larger public awareness at one point. Or at least I became aware of her thru Beck. You should TH-cam the session they did entitled "Live at Ronnie Scotts," a personal fave of mine. And one of his recent CD's, Loud Hailer, proved him to still be cuttin' it on the edge of musical terrain. He seemed more than willing to cultivate young, male and female, talent. I can think of no finer way to eulogize the man than by that which Bill Murray said upon introducing him on stage at an event: "Ladys and Gentlemen, he IS the TRUTH! Nobody sounds like the honorable Jeff Beck!!" Indeed. NoooBODY does. Not even Clapton, no slouch at his art, could match Beck's sound. Lighters in the air please folks, or smart phone lights to you younger readers viewing this, here's to the passing of an age in music! We will not see his like again. John~ American Net'Zen

Well said. JB is my favorite musician! Saw him several times, but saw him oct 10th at the Count Basey Theatre 2nd row, right in front of him. Unbelievable show, Johnny was good, Rhonda , Anika and Jason were all exceptional. 3 months later and he's gone.
I only saw the great Jeff Beck once but what a show. It was in Fair Park in Dallas. Was warmed up by The Robert Cray band and played with the local hero SRV. Maybe 2000 people there. A most memorable night, a guitar players heaven that night And you are SO right about Austin not being what it was!

I was also at the Brown County,Nashville,IN show you mentioned with Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp and they tore it up! The Video you shared was @Ronnie Scott's NOV 2007 it was the 6th and extra set of his 5-Night Residency that week,I was put in the front row because a crazeed fan was standing up playing 'Air Guitar' so his manager put people he knew from then on instead. I am sending my condolences,and am gutted from Jeff's passing,I traveled all over following Jeff all the way until his final show in Reno,NV, they'll never be another. Never got to see him,,,,somehow missed him at Winterland, touring for Blow By Blow in '75. I bought the album. I didn't know the dang thing was out.. I had everything before except Rough and Ready. RIP, Jeff Beck.
When SRV came to town soon before the helicopter crash, I sure am glad I got my butt up off the couch and went to see him. I wish i would have seen Ronnie Van Zant of Skynyrd before the plane crash. I had the Jeff Beck albums, Blow by Blow, Wired, and Guitar shop.

Just watched the video of the pre show Gene Vincent rockabilly thing you were talking about... It was great! I've always been a fan of Clapton and Page, but I was never really into Beck. I'm not a big fan of Jazz and I knew that was Jeff's thing so I never considered it much... But after watching this video I've found a new level of respect for the man Many thanks, Otis Gibbs... Thx for bringing your perspective Otis, I wasn't aware of his rockabilly roots. I came up with the late 50s on and listened and played along (on my prized 00018 I bought with yardwork jobs money I made..$212 00 at Manny's in NYC 1966).with the wide range of music around in the rock and folk rock heyday. Jeff has simply been a marvel of sound and invention my whole life and was thrilled he was a force of style,imagination and the sweetest hands in the business.. while maintaining his love and appreciative generosity to his peers, A beautiful guy went capriciously before his time and talent had been maximized. It hit me kinda hard, but the cat DID live in all our times. Lucky us.

Bought the Shapes of Things 45 in 1966 when I was 12. Bought Truth when it came out. Blow By Blow and Wired as well. Saw him only once; with the Jan Hammer Group. Live At Ronnie Scott's is a master class. What a guy!
Jeff Beck's enthusiasm for the players he was on stage with was one really cool aspect of his musicality and elder statesman stature. His right hand was like a Swiss Army Leatherman tool for operating a Strat to probably its utmost. There's more fascinating stuff going on right there than in most of what passes for "live" music in the 21st century. His playing on "Looking For Another Pure Love," on Stevie Wonder's Talking Book album is one of my favorite things he did. The idea of those two guys in a studio, just bouncing ideas around, at that point in their lives is pretty damn incredible.
Your reflections on Jeff are like how I feel about him. I to greatly regret not going to Nashville in Brown county to see him, I'm not too far away. Somehow I thought there would be another chance. He's for ever young and was greatly gifted and shared it until the end.
Beck held influence over many guitarists. Bands I played with starting out always included Yardbirds tunes. I was fortunate enough to have seen JB many times and had many of his albums. His "sound" changed so much through the years - amazing. I was lucky enough to aquire back stage tickets often in Denver and found Beck to be stand offish taciturn and phlegmatic, he earned the right. Great guitarists and someone I consider in a very small group who are the best ever. Thanks Otis.
There must be more Jeff Beck live footage from the 1970s out there somewhere. Really wonderful video. This time to reflect on Jeff Beck's life and career is so important to me. I've thought a lot about Jeff Beck over the years, but am thinking and learning of so much more about him that is incredibly impressive. Yes, his talent as a bandleader is under-appreciated.
Lovely, thoughtful tribute to Jeff Beck -- you described well the joy and generosity of spirit that comes across in his performance videos of more recent vintage (as opposed to smashing his guitar in "Blow Up"!). Beck seemed to truly mature as a player and person over the decades. I really appreciate that he liked to have strong women in his band -- not as eye candy (or at least not just) but as peers and great musicians. Having that feminine aspect is a nice balance to the Rock and Roll Boys club. My go to -- "Rough and Ready."

The juxtaposition of the Rockabilly set and how Jeff "normally" plays is amazing. His unique style of playing is so nuanced and original. On the Ronnie Scott Blu-ray, watch the Rockabilly set and then the regular Jeff set. You'll be slapped in the face by his originality and style. Unbelievable!

It's so cool that you emphasized Jeff Beck's rockabilly roots and that rockabilly show at Ronnie Scott's. I need to do a deep dive there. I got to see JB in concert twice, in Birmingham, AL; once as a teenager after he released Blow by Blow and on his '89 tour with SRV (where they both played the encore, Hendrix). I'm disappointed I didn't see him once in the past few years after rediscovering him. His mastery of the guitar is off-the-charts!

He did it all with his guitar. do remember few years back there was a series where they got different movie directors to do a film on the blues?forgive me for not remembering the directors name but he was English and had Van Morrison, Lulu,Tom Jones and Jeff Beck. man what you said about playing in context is so true. I think one of the songs was cry me a river, and the chords were beautiful and the crying single string was heartbreaking. saw him a few times and he was a master of presentation. he could sound like a heard of rhinos running through the room and stop on a dime and hit one note that would give you goosebumps. and then there's his slide playing. well I ran my mouth enough going for the second cup of coffee. much love to you Otis and Jeff your inspiration and music lives on.
Interestingly the great rockabilly video you recommend has Jeff playing with a pick, probably simply in service to the sounds he was seeking for that music. Never say never with Jeff…. Blow by Blow and Wired are the some of the most influential guitar music sound collections ever made and yet represent only one of the pinnacles he achieved. Thanks for the thoughts Otis!

Jeff's tribute to Les Paul and rockabilly with Imelda May is a great album AND DVD! First heard Constipated Duck on a 'breakfast' TV show as they were going to commercial. Within a week I'd found Blow By Blow on vinyl. Within a month I'd grabbed most of his 70s LPs

So...I saw Jeff several times, 1980-2014. It wasn't only a concert, it was a spectacular spectacle in guitar playing. Every time I saw him, he had reinvented himself!
The dude was absolutely brilliant. I think he was so advanced from his counterparts. Meaning the other bunch of players that surrounded him. Anyway. He will forever be one of the greats from this little ole planet of ours. My favorite era of his music. Would have to be the early years. I can’t get enough of the yardbirds. Peace to you Jeff. Your journey has just begun.✌️

Jeff lived in his mum's house in Demesne Road, Wallington, when he was a teenager, I lived about two or three miles away from him, I was about 16 he was about 18, I used to go round to his house and he sometimes came round to mine, he taught me quite a lot of pull off's and hammer on's, as I was just starting out, he was an absolutely amazing player at that age, and I'm still nowhere near it, but I plod on.
Saw Jeff Beck in Seattle in the late 60’s at the Eagles Ballroom, no seats everyone sat on the floor. He came on stage in blue jeans an a white t-shirt. With his back towards the crowd he played solo for an hour, he had us mesmerized, back then WOW was the word.
Long time Jeff Beck fan. Blow by Blow and Wired were always my favorite albums from Beck and his version of Good Bye Pork Pie Hat takes me on a journey every time I listen to it.
Unlike most rock and rollers that came into the spotlight in the 60's, Beck's creativity never stopped expanding. The man never 'settled down' professionally.
Saw Jeff Healy open for Jeff Beck opening for SRV in Toronto awhile back - Healy was a hometown boy made good - JB was full on fusion on fire (not a word spoken until he gave a shoutout to Healy) whoa boy! SRV smoked the place (my second SRV show saw him at Massey Hall in 84) - finally SRV does a couple of encores and then invites a "friend of his" out - JB and SRV proceeded to absolutely fry Freddie King's Goin Down🔥🔥🔥 - the only tune JB played that night that had lyrics - great night goes without saying - sadly none of these legends are with us any more 😞

I got to see Jeff numerous times over the years starting from The Jeff Beck Group that featured Rod the Mod and Ron Wood on bass in a little teen club. It was always a trancendental experience as a guitar player. God Bless you Jeff wherever you are jamming with Jimi and Stevie.

I really enjoyed the second incarnation on the Jeff Beck group with Clive chaman Bob tench cozy pal Max Middleton. That was such a great hybrid of pop jazz and sort of that band's own style. But I also loved blow-by-blow when it came out as anybody you ever owned a guitar did. And I loved Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer. That live openly did is wonderful. And of course his yardbird stint, legendary
I just watched the Jeff Beck show you spoke about. I'm speechless, that might be the most incredible 20 mins of live music I've experienced in decades. Why is it we don't celebrate great musicians until they're gone? Maybe we take too many things in life for granted. I really appreciate the hard work you put into these wonderful stories. I tip my hat to you my friend. If we ever cross paths I would be honored to buy you a quality cup of coffee and share a story or two.

I saw him open for Santana once. He blew everyone's minds with a jaw dropping set. The audience was shaking it off and crying for more when Beck exited.
Carlos came out praising Beck and acknowledged what had just happened, how the air had been sucked out of the outdoor venue. Then Carlos was begging Beck to come out on stage and jam. Literally begging from the stage, three cheers for Jeff Beck type thing, and for whatever reason Beck didn't come out. I felt bad for Carlos, he said he was on that tour for six weeks and Beck still wouldn't jam w/him. lol. Spinal Tap moment.
He and Stevie Ray did a show in Toronto, Jeff Healy opened. It was called the Fire and the Fury Tour. SRV was touring the In Step album and Beck was on the Guitar Shop Tour. Outrageous show. Terry Bozzio was drumming w/Beck.
He got better with age as his right hand developed a mind of it's own. Every time he toured he added dynamic musicians and warped out into new styles. The last time I saw him was in 2011 and that was the best concert I've ever seen. He did How High the Moon on that Gretsch and Somewhere Over the Rainbow on the Strat.
He had Merle Haggard or Stevie Wonder level cool/class. Jeff was big on Chet/Les/Cliff Gallup...Roy Buchanan

Saw Jeff numerous times and saw the tour where he opened for Santana. It was at Starplex in Dallas. That was a a rare time that I think Carlos had more energy than Beck that night. Beck is by far still the best I have ever seen. Playing in heaven for God now.
@@tommilks3043 He opened once for BB King and didn't jam with BB. It would seem obvious that they'd do something together but it didn't happen.
They jammed on TV in the lead up to the tour but when I saw them Beck didn't appear in BB's set.
@@bradc32 For sure. When I saw them it was at Skydome Toronto and I think it was the first show where they converted the stadium into a smaller indoor venue with a thing called the Sky tent. I remember the sound being pretty rough. SRV was on overload though
I had they great privilege to see Jeff Beck twice-once in the late ‘70s, then again just a few years ago. Both times, he played his ass off. At the ‘70s show, he came out for 3 or 4 encores, each time it seemed he was so amazed that the crowd was digging him so much. The more recent show, he was touring with Buddy Guy. Guy opened, then came back later and played a few numbers with Jeff and his band-awesome expedience. IMHO, of all the ‘60s/‘70s era “Rock Guitar Gods”, Jeff was the only one who kept evolving, pushing the envelope of what can be done with a guitar, growing as an artist. The world has lost an irreplaceable musician. If you haven’t already, search TH-cam for his performances at Ronnie Scott’s. That will give you some idea of what he was capable of doing. RIP Jeff Beck
Over the years I saw Jeff Beck maybe a dozen times. Recently, I found a few torn off ticket stubs from back in the day and one was from Jeff Beck sharing the bill with the Mahavishnu Otchestra at Hofstra University on Long Island. The price was $6.50!!
Probably the most memorable show was Jeff and Stevie Ray back in the '89 at Maddison Square Garden and it was billed as the "Fire Meets the Fury" tour.
BTW, I was stationed at Bergstrom Air Force Base in Austin back in '69-'71 and I believe that the base is now the municipal airport.

He waa a Chameleon. He did right on Les Paul with Imelda May after he died. Cliff Gallup and yet he defined futuristic sounds that people can't duplicate.
Jeff Beck was an astounding musician, a conversationalist really with the guitar as his voice. His relative uniqueness in his field of endeavor, leaving aside his musicianship, was that he remained a force even as most of his contemporaries were aging out. He continually explored the musical terrain with new artists.
I daresay he brought the likes of a young bassist phenom, female Aussie bassist Tal Wilkenfeld, to larger public awareness at one point. Or at least I became aware of her thru Beck. You should TH-cam the session they did entitled "Live at Ronnie Scotts," a personal fave of mine.
And one of his recent CD's, Loud Hailer, proved him to still be cuttin' it on the edge of musical terrain. He seemed more than willing to cultivate young, male and female, talent. I can think of no finer way to eulogize the man than by that which Bill Murray said upon introducing him on stage at an event:
"Ladys and Gentlemen, he IS the TRUTH! Nobody sounds like the honorable Jeff Beck!!"
Indeed. NoooBODY does. Not even Clapton, no slouch at his art, could match Beck's sound. Lighters in the air please folks, or smart phone lights to you younger readers viewing this, here's to the passing of an age in music! We will not see his like again.

Well said. JB is my favorite musician! Saw him several times, but saw him oct 10th at the Count Basey Theatre 2nd row, right in front of him. Unbelievable show, Johnny was good, Rhonda , Anika and Jason were all exceptional. 3 months later and he's gone.

I only saw the great Jeff Beck once but what a show. It was in Fair Park in Dallas. Was warmed up by The Robert Cray band and played with the local hero SRV. Maybe 2000 people there. A most memorable night, a guitar players heaven that night

I watched him yesterday with Tal and narada Michael Walden doing little wing with Michael singing on drums omg I preferred it to Hendrix and Jeff was in awe of Hendrix and nearly quit playing when he first heard him

Otis,you are spot on about everything you say about Jeff Beck. I made it to Austin,TX a few times to see Jeff Beck,always incredible,and Stevie Ray was always on his mind! I was also at the Brown County,Nashville,IN show you mentioned with Jeff Beck and Johnny Depp and they tore it up! The Video you shared was @Ronnie Scott's NOV 2007 it was the 6th and extra set of his 5-Night Residency that week,I was put in the front row because a crazeed fan was standing up playing 'Air Guitar' so his manager put people he knew from then on instead. I am sending my condolences,and am gutted from Jeff's passing,I traveled all over following Jeff all the way until his final show in Reno,NV, they'll never be another. When SRV came to town soon before the helicopter crash, I sure am glad I got my butt up off the couch and went to see him. I wish i would have seen Ronnie Van Zant of Skynyrd before the plane crash. I had the Jeff Beck albums, Blow by Blow, Wired, and Guitar shop.

I've always been a fan of Clapton and Page, but I was never really into Beck. I'm not a big fan of Jazz and I knew that was Jeff's thing so I never considered it much... But after watching this video I've found a new level of respect for the man

I came up with the late 50s on and listened and played along (on my prized 00018 I bought with yardwork jobs money I made..$212 00 at Manny's in NYC 1966).with the wide range of music around in the rock and folk rock heyday. Jeff has simply been a marvel of sound and invention my whole life and was thrilled he was a force of style,imagination and the sweetest hands in the business.. while maintaining his love and appreciative generosity to his peers, A beautiful guy went capriciously before his time and talent had been maximized. It hit me kinda hard, but the cat DID live in all our times. Lucky us.
Hey Otis, You did manage to say some stuff about JB that I had not not heard said. I went to see that Crazy Legs performance. It is everything you said and more. My favorite part is when the reprise Train Kept a Rolling as he had plaid so many times with the yardbirds. Loved that video. Everyone should checki it out.

Bought the Shapes of Things 45 in 1966 when I was 12. Bought Truth when it came out. Blow By Blow and Wired as well. Saw him only once; with the Jan Hammer Group. Live At Ronnie Scott's is a master class. What a guy!
Jeff Beck's enthusiasm for the players he was on stage with was one really cool aspect of his musicality and elder statesman stature.
His right hand was like a Swiss Army Leatherman tool for operating a Strat to probably its utmost.
There's more fascinating stuff going on right there than in most of what passes for "live" music in the 21st century.
His playing on "Looking For Another Pure Love," on Stevie Wonder's Talking Book album is one of my favorite things he did.
The idea of those two guys in a studio, just bouncing ideas around, at that point in their lives is pretty damn incredible.

Your reflections on Jeff are like how I feel about him. I to greatly regret not going to Nashville in Brown county to see him, I'm not too far away. Somehow I thought there would be another chance. He's for ever young and was greatly gifted and shared it until the end.

Beck held influence over many guitarists. Bands I played with starting out always included Yardbirds tunes. I was fortunate enough to have seen JB many times and had many of his albums. His "sound" changed so much through the years - amazing. I was lucky enough to aquire back stage tickets often in Denver and found Beck to be stand offish taciturn and phlegmatic, he earned the right. Great guitarists and someone I consider in a very small group who are the best ever. Thanks Otis.

Really wonderful video. This time to reflect on Jeff Beck's life and career is so important to me. I've thought a lot about Jeff Beck over the years, but am thinking and learning of so much more about him that is incredibly impressive. Yes, his talent as a bandleader is under-appreciated.
Lovely, thoughtful tribute to Jeff Beck -- you described well the joy and generosity of spirit that comes across in his performance videos of more recent vintage (as opposed to smashing his guitar in "Blow Up"!). Beck seemed to truly mature as a player and person over the decades. I really appreciate that he liked to have strong women in his band -- not as eye candy (or at least not just) but as peers and great musicians. Having that feminine aspect is a nice balance to the Rock and Roll Boys club.

The juxtaposition of the Rockabilly set and how Jeff "normally" plays is amazing. His unique style of playing is so nuanced and original. On the Ronnie Scott Blu-ray, watch the Rockabilly set and then the regular Jeff set. You'll be slapped in the face by his originality and style. Unbelievable!

It's so cool that you emphasized Jeff Beck's rockabilly roots and that rockabilly show at Ronnie Scott's. I need to do a deep dive there. I got to see JB in concert twice, in Birmingham, AL; once as a teenager after he released Blow by Blow and on his '89 tour with SRV (where they both played the encore, Hendrix). I'm disappointed I didn't see him once in the past few years after rediscovering him. His mastery of the guitar is off-the-charts!

I hear them say you need at least 10,000 hours on your instrument to be considered proficient. Jeff had 10,000 hours in 1968.

Jeff Beck was the guy who truly represented rock and roll from the past into the future. He did it all with his guitar. do remember few years back there was a series where they got different movie directors to do a film on the blues?forgive me for not remembering the directors name but he was English and had Van Morrison, Lulu,Tom Jones and Jeff Beck. man what you said about playing in context is so true. I think one of the songs was cry me a river, and the chords were beautiful and the crying single string was heartbreaking. saw him a few times and he was a master of presentation. he could sound like a heard of rhinos running through the room and stop on a dime and hit one note that would give you goosebumps. and then there's his slide playing. well I ran my mouth enough going for the second cup of coffee. much love to you Otis and Jeff your inspiration and music lives on.

Interestingly the great rockabilly video you recommend has Jeff playing with a pick, probably simply in service to the sounds he was seeking for that music. Never say never with Jeff…. Blow by Blow and Wired are the some of the most influential guitar music sound collections ever made and yet represent only one of the pinnacles he achieved. Thanks for the thoughts Otis!
Great video Otis!!! To your point, if you see the version of Cause We've Ended As Lovers from the '07 Crossroads Festival Jeff's reaction to Tal's solo is exactly what you described!!!! As Bill Murray said in his introduction, "nobody sounds like Jeff Beck!!!"
