Thanks for sharing your story and letting others know sobriety is possible. Congrats on 7 years, 8 mo. That's something to hold dear. I've lost more friends than I can count and by the grace of God I'm still here through addiction to Oxy and other pain meds.
During the last few years i had some major random act of violence against me where I was given pain meds in the hospital but leaving I knew that prior PTSD and this most recent incident that taking the pain meds at home was a recipe for relapse. I know I would have been risking over a decade. I was also in a car accident that should have killed me 9 months prior to being attacked. My orthopedic Doc and other 2 doc's all did "pain management" which is pretty much weed cards and "30s" based on everyone talking in the waiting room. I told the primary doc from jump, no opiates. He looked surprised and said okay, never asked again. The 2 other doc's asked once each and never asked again as well. They asked about a MMJ card which i said no for multiple reasons. A. Gun owners cant have MMJ cards, B. I lose my ability to carry and clearance for some contract work. Plus I haven't smoked in nearly 20 years. Not for me.
We all settled on low grade, non narcotic muscle relaxers as needed which i fight thru the pain of torn up back, neck, knee, ankle, and wrist fractures down my right side.
Surviving this accident is truly a miracle. I missed being crushed by a falling 100 ft tree driving on a clear night. It crushed the entire vehicle and missed crushing me by inches. I had a nasty concussion I'm still getting headaches from that nearly 2 years later from the roof catching me as I ducked. My GF skipped the ride 10 mins before or she would be dead. The roof was on her seat.
You're absolutely right that we are where we are supposed to be. My GF and I say "Everything as it is meant to be". Even in the hospital after the attack that again should have killed us both was something we took in stride and have tried to help each other through the PTSD symptoms. I can't get into much of the attack as it's still a legal issue.
Congrats again on your 7+ years and work you're doing. I guarantee you are going to reach kids with your message. I never realized the severity of the reckless shit at 16-17. I see dudes who I was in school with at 18 who are nearly 40 now and still are fucked from stupid crimes, violations on probation and snowballing crimes to feed addiction. This is 20 years later they're still in the system which is nuts. I'm happy you didn't fall back into using when losing your Mom. I see a rapidly declining health in my Mom over the last 4 years and it sucks to watch.
I am blessed to be here and not only have my partner who never has used but has an understanding of addiction who is supportive in this and my business but also we have leaned on each other throughout the struggles with sleep and anxiety from the attack. I feel horrible for her since this is her first serious run in with PTSD and I've been working on it for 7 years in therapy, I went back almost a year ago to get ahead of the last events. I'm trying to encourage her to go because I want her to have some safety in her mind and not be "on" 24/7. I know she needs to do this on her on with support when she's ready.

Loved the video yoo! But just throwing this out there, acid is actually what got me clean. I was day trippin alone in my room and I started talking to myself. I said "I'm on drugs. Wow, I'm really on drugs. I don't wanna be on drugs anymore" and I cried for like 4 fuckin hours lmao. But ever since then, I quit doing all drugs except weed. Then eventually dropped the weed too.

Love the interview, as a former cop, I’m not going to lie, I used to hate the drug court program bc it felt like there was really no accountability, we’d have guys out past curfew, or involved in some of the overdoses in our city and theft and disturbances and all that would happen would be a report sent to the probation officer or drug court cc’d in the reports. They’d get 30 days or so and be right back in the program.
I’ll admit there were some times when you saw the success stories bc as officers, we were obligated to check on these guys daily so you get to know them, and some have jobs and get back in touch with their families. But again for the most part it was kind of annoying knowing they weren’t really taking these new resources seriously.
