Glad it was helpful! Thanks for the comment, seriously at this stage I do most of the video's for the chance to share my experience with others....and your comment makes me feel very good about that!
I’ve got a DAir smart jacket. I was using the jacket with updated firmware version. According to their user manual, the airbag can’t trigger if you travel at less than 10Km/h AND you are not riding the bike. In my case, I was neither, moving at 10 km/h nor riding the bike. Actually, I was stepping out my bike, just storing the helmet at the vault when suddenly the airbag popped. The airbag triggered in an specific situation the manual says it must not do it. As I was basically “doing nothing” when the airbag was triggered, this worried me a lot, because it can also trigger when you are riding and cause an accident. When the airbag pops, it’s a really abrupt move, so it can easily make you fall from the bike. I contacted Dainese Spain and I was expecting, not only to repair my DAir Smart Jacket for free (it was in guarantee and obviously the product did not function correctly), but also to download the data from the jacket to understand what went wrong. They told me that it was my responsibility, that I needed to pay 250€ (half of the cost of the product) to reequip the airbag, and they where not interested at all in getting data or understanding what when wrong to patch their product. I’ve got two DAir jackets, I decided to sell the one which is still working and I will not repair the faulty one because I really can’t trust it. I will look for another solution. Alpinestars and Ixon has also good alternatives.
This is very surprising and makes me very troubled to read this Ivan! Now I have my worries with this jacket. You are the first one that I have heard or read about that has had this happen. It seems very odd that this would happen. It would seem that Dainese would be interested is examining the jacket...not sure if there is any memory in the system that they could retrieve. But at least they could look at it and determine what they could visually? In any case I have now had mine for more than a year and have yet to experience any issue, or problem with my jacket. But, of course after your testimony I am now very concerned. So sorry to hear about your trouble here!
I visited the D-store in OC and spoke with a representative. I asked him if he knew of any faulty deployments. He was honest enough to tell me a story about some guy who stopped at a red light and dropped to the floor to do some push-ups. I ended up purchasing this vest regardless of hearing this story, trusting that Dainese would work out the algorithm. I hope you, as well as all other D-air owners, went thru the registration process. The canisters are not physically connected to the battery/brain when brand new; you have to do it yourself. During the registration process, the application will also verify if the firmware is the latest edition; mine required two updates. I hope this info helps anyone with this vest 🙂
Awesome! Thank you! I hope you never have to "prove" it in a real world situation...I hope it works well for you on the bike. We were scheduled to visit Germany this year but the virus has curtailed international travel...so enjoy those beautiful roads there!
Got the D Air Jacket myself. Awesome bit of kit. Better than the tethered vest it replaced, nothing to think about, just get on and ride. I'm a size 54 jacket and wear the vest on the outside, this required me to buy an XL....
Great input......I am hoping in my case that if I wear the vest on the outside it will still fit me over a tighter fitting leather jacket. Haven't done it yet though!
Thanks for the in depth review; I am purchasing the Alpinestars TechAir5. The main reason is the 30 hours of battery autonomy of the Alpinestars versus the 5 hours Dainese one. Not that 5 hours isn't adequate for a typical ride, but I want to be able to ride a few days without the need to recharge, because we have enough gadgets that need charging... I also like the fact the TechAir5 has Bluetooth, and records your ride.
Thanks for sharing, thinking about it now and looking at the specs I think there are advantages to the Alpinestars version. It seems to me to have a bit more coverage and as you point out the BlueTooth is certainly noteworthy. They are both fine I think. The Dainese can be worn OVER a jacket as they claim that it has abrasion resistance. i suppose one could also ride with just the Dainese and no jacket. The Alpinestars line has some air specific jackets in leather AND textile that are designed to work with the air bag and have panels allowing them to expand that are specifically located around the garment. For me, one disappointment is that some of the jackets I had before the Dainese Air Jacket won't work with the vest UNDER the jacket because there isn't enough room for expansion.
Very nice and sympathic! I just tested the smart-Jacket to for my channel! Best regards from sunny Berlin. (Poorly not the great weather, like in california)
My wife has a cousin living in Berlin, and the city life is very cool...but as you say the weather TOO cool, well not California style! Ride safe in the big city dude!
Can you say how the airflow/cooling of the mesh jacket or a perforated leather jacket are affected by the Smart Jacket? Thanks! I am torn between the Smart Jacket and the D-air Racing 3 Jacket. The downside of the Racing 3 is that there is no back airbag, just a CE1 protector.
Casual Flyer, there is an effect with the extra layer of the D-Air Smart Jacket, no doubt about it. However it is really a "vest" more than a jacket so there is some help from less added layering. The material of the smart jacket itself is mesh and does allow some airflow to get through. So, I will continue to wear it through our San Diego summer days, but it will be that little bit warmer. No "free lunch" there I guess. Can't comment on the Racing Jacket as I've no direct experience. However even with the added layer for safety I'm willing to compromise a bit more discomfort with the vest. Hope this helps!
@@GareyCooperdude Definitely helps! The weather here in Lisbon, Portugal is similar to San Diego. Just today we hit 37ºC (98ºF) and some times it will even go into the >40ºC (>104ºF). Those temperatures with the mesh jacket are already very hot, that's why I asked you for the comparison. Yes I agree with you, it's better a little more discomfort to get better safety! I'll go with the vest! Thank you!
The phantom still sounds beastly! Still would love to drive down to you sometime. Maybe once this pandemic is over. My Ducati is in the shop for an oil leak and new belts. About 1000 worth of maintenance. What's the saying, you've got to pay to play?
$$$'s wow! Yes, there is truth to that. You get in the "club" and then you have to pay the dues. Be glad to visit with your and meet face-to-face AJ! Maybe June will clear up for us?
Thanks Garey Cooper, Great video, simple and informative. If I may, what is the size of your chest? I am bit surprised by the fact that you are wearing a size Medium, that means these things run little large. I have chest size of 44 and Dainese site recommending XL. I plan to wear it both inside and outside of my jackets.
Good question! I too have a 44 chest. I would think that an XL would be very large on you.....the medium is snug on me but NOT tight. Do you have any way to actually try one on for fitment? If possible, I highly recommend doing this...it is a big purchase after all and to get it right is important. If not, and you can order it and return it if it doesn't fit...I'd recommend starting with a medium and if that does not work go the large. Good luck and I hope you never have to actually use it!
Very useful video, Garey. Thanks. I really like your gentle and friendly presentation style 😀 Good work, sir.
Thank you kindly
Thanks for such a detailed explanation. Definitely one of the best videos out there on this vest!
