    This was such a relaxing and special video. I could watch Lew do videos all day! I can't wait to plant my dahlias!

    The may Dahlia was a Cafe or something. However in February you grew a Rip City… how can we know for sure that that is what’s going to happen.

    We’re in Zone 8. It’s useful to know to plant dahlias outside in February. That’s what we did since we bought some a few weeks ago and didn’t have a cool storage place indoors.

    I have always planted my tubers upright, never on the side but with the growing tip just poking out of the soil in a 3 litre pot in March then when they show some growth, plant it in the garden. They are fab. UK

    • @LXW-Arts
      @LXW-Arts 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tend to grow sideways but they probably moved upright because of the sun

    Beautiful Dahlia. I have been tossing the dead flowers and leaves back to the pot, is it gonna do any harm for how I did?

  • @wenjunzhao8696
    @wenjunzhao8696 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What's the reason to plant the tubers sideways?

  • @agb0012000

    You said to plant the tubers in a clump, but you can separate the tubers to get more can load, correct, I hope? Because that is exactly what I did.

    • @RogersGardensCDM
      @RogersGardensCDM  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dahlias can stay in the ground and come up every year. As they grow in the ground, they slowly grow and multiple their tubers. After some time you can dig them up and separate the tubers and replant them to spread the plant out more, get more individual plants, and thus more blooms. ~ Roger's Gardens

    I live in zone 9B, in Texas. Do I have to dig my dahlias every year or can they stay in the ground?

    Sorry. I meant to say, Is that correct as far as being able to separate the tubers to get more dahlias.

    Thank you for great video. Do you water Dahlia while it is in container? Do we need lots of direct sunlight for Thalia in container ?

      I am here for the water answer as well, just planted my first. As far as heat and sunlight I have read they like and thrive in both!

    Lew: a very nice video, but agree with other comments on this thread. From what I have read in the past, critical information such as if the tubers have "eyes", how to place the eyes in the soil, the overall condition and the appearance of the tubers, and HOW TO WATER. Buckets of mistakes could be made without this education being included.

    I was just clearing out dead flowers from last year and I didn't know I could save my dahlias. I found this huge clump of tubers in my large pot outside. If I repot tubers that have wintered outside, will they still grow? UK.

    • @annacollier5372
      @annacollier5372 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Rogers Gardens thank you for your prompt reply! They seemed firm for the most part. There was a small piece at the top that was mushy and liquified but the rest were firm and dry and smelled sort of fragrant.
      I've planted them and now I'm keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🌸

    Hi can you put the tubers right in the ground or do I have to pot them on first to se some life ie leafs first ? Ian from glasgow

    • @weirdangel4025
      @weirdangel4025 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      ian broadfoot u can put them directly in the ground after the first frost is gone. but make sure to check for new growth before planting and don't water until u see green parts poking out above soil.

      water when very top of the soil gets dry to the touch, or do like me - everyday, after all garden works, go ahead, make a cut of tea, try to relax while watching at the sunset at around 9 pm and calm and peacefully, while drinking tea, take a hose and water every dahlia from the top and while doing that, enjoy the gorgious flowers :)

    Hi, I bought some established Dahlias plants in 3 litre pots from the garden centre and they are growing quite well and flowering beautifully, do I have to dig them up in winter ? As I have never had Dahlias before so not sure what to do. Thanks

    • @RogersGardensCDM

      You brush the soil off after they've dried a bit and put them in a cool dry place until the next year. Usually a shoe box is nice and in the garage.
