When learning a new song, I have to ask myself if I want to learn the Marty way or the right way. The Carl way is always gonna be 10 times harder than Marty’s….but right.
I Think this is the 3rd time learning this Song in life and Prob the Most Accurate way to Play it Right Here. Thanks For Posting. Keep Rockin! Cheers! 👍
Carl I realised I never said this was the first time I actually learned this song from you about 3 years ago and adapted it to a true fingerpicking and rhythm style. I still play this to this day. Thankyou so much from 41 year old me for the initial epiphany of how this goes, in a similar way I learned and had the same kind of epiphany toward Travis picking to go on to play Lindsey Buckingham style stuff properly. I'd share and recommend anytime anyone needs a good online guitar lesson
Thanks for all these amazing lessons, Carl! For the section around 10:30, some alternative chord fingerings I have also tried are 9x7910x; 8x7810x; 7x77x5, and 6x77x5. Amazing lessons as always, thanks again for all you do!
I also tried long time ago this alternative fingering for the outro and it's actually the way Page does it (I did with thumb on the low E string for the first chord) on some very old live footages. Thks
Broseph - the part where it picks up at 4:53 is an Aminor formation thats simply moved up to the 9th then 7th fret = You keep the Aminor position held, then play that at the 9th fret while letting the open E ring - and then you move it down a step to the 7th fret also letting the E ring. The way you're hitting the G on the high E in that lick is actually accomplished on the B string while letting the E ring. It's another example of Jimmy simply moving a position to other frets. It's actually really a bit easier than what youre doing and also involves more open ringing strings. Try it out - play an A minor, then slide that position to the 9th fret then 7th. All the while letting the other strings ring open. (except the Low E) = Try it out. Thanks for all the awesome lessons = I'm here to brush up on that darn interlude...ugggh = Thanks again man
you're right but you're explanation makes it a bit difficult to understand. Simply follow the strumming pattern in the song starting on the A minor, then move the A minor shape up to the 9th fret, then down to the 7th fret, with the high e ringing throughout.
Many thanks for this lesson! There are plenty of videos breaking down the iconic intro/verse riff but very few describing the parts you explain this this videos. It really helps! Subscribed
You're a great teacher Carl..you've covered so many songs that I've wanted to learn that there's a high risk of me becoming lazy 😂😂...keep going bro ✌️
I physically can't to the stretch from first fret to the fifth fret with me pinky and index finger for the ending part :( I wish there was another way !
Same here. It's the first time there's actually something I just can't play physically despite of how hard I try... It's pretty frustrating, especially if you listen to the original and know you are not able to get that beautiful sound.
Great tutorial Carl! Can you do The Sky is a Neighbourhood, the Foo Fighters song? There aren't any great tutorials for it yet and it's an amazing song.
I thoroughly enjoyed learning this,if you can master this you can play pink Floyd-Is there anybody out there (instrumental part),almost structured around the same chords.its the first song I learned by ear before the days of TH-cam lol
any ideas what to do if i cant get that very last finger spread between the first and fifth fret on the ending just before the very last arpeggio section ?
Without giving away too much, I bet you know that you get a lot of look-see's and recon from other pro-caliber guitar players, teachers, group players who want to know how to play something the right way, correct? I'm told that we would be surprised if we knew how many real players steal technique, know-how, and tips from your site and others who have taken the time to deconstruct iconic rock guitar parts and diagram them out...on video. To try and emulate classic tunes is dangerous to the pain thresholds of we "senior" guitar hacks....the arthritic pain incurred in tackling that outro chord layering and stretch is too much....I can't roll back the clock, but it is sure fun to try. Thanks for the lesson and the memories and the insights.
some teachers on youtube play the songs slightly different when presenting the whole song to avoid problems of copyright, they are playing it the "wrong way" (just a couple notes or a slight different tempo/beat) on purpose, and they teach the correct stuff. Doesn't happen with all songs though, some bands are more picky than others with that. Anyway, I think this song appears (or used to) credited as "traditional, arranged by Page" or something. If it's "traditional", isn't it public domain of some sort?

this is great. the combined walkdown at end sounds fantastic. what a stretch on the last one!!
Love marty schwartz don't get me wrong but when he don't teach you the whole song I go to this guy lol.

Those big stretches at the end are hard but definitely worth it. You play a multiple guitar part with one guitar and you're sure to impress someone!

Hi, good job but i can't find part 1😞....
What demon did you sell your soul to to be able to make that stretch 1 2 5?
Wha...? So the other 100 videos of the same song are fine, but yours got chopped? No reason why given?
