  • Katrina Cain returns for a collaborative conversation about bringing vocal performances into the modular realm with our pal Jacob!
    Jacob put together a modular system designed to provide different vocal effects and processing, as well as two smaller "control pods" for Katrina to use as she performs.
    Join them as they explore how to use comparators to track and divide pitches, multi-tap delays and loopers for rhythmic and polyphonic overdubs, as well as discuss some of the techniques they use to integrate a vocal performance with a synthesizer.
    For a more in depth look at some of the modules and concepts used in this video check out Jacob's Signal article on this rig : www.perfectcircuit.com/signal...

    "We created an envelope where we could feed Jim's (Morrison) track into the Moog so that he could play any note on the keyboard and it would process his voice (...) "I then added a little delay and fed the whole thing into an infinite tape repeat. That was hand-played."
    -Bruce Botnick on recording and processing Jim Morrison's voice for the song 'Strange Days', that was about 54 years ago (!)

      So that's what made that unusual warbling effect. Interesting! There's also the last PBS interview when Jim describes "one man singing or talking with ... electronic set ups"

    really loved this! especially interesting to hear Katrina's insights from a perspective of someone unfamiliar with modular synths. this sparked some ideas for me on how I could use my guitar in conjunction with my modular setup. great!

    Katrina's insight was pretty sick, and she seemed like she was really interested! And on top of all of that, her voice is amazing

    I have the ability to run vocals through my Arp2600, but have a hard time wrapping my head around the more complex concepts. thanks for this!

    What a great idea to make synths accessible to other fields of artists. I’d like to see what Katrina comes up with after experimenting for a while

    Thank you for sharing this! I loved the discussion between Katrina and Jacob - for someone new to modular like myself, I really appreciated the "outsider" fresh perspective and feedback from Katrina. I think sometimes those in the know, forget that to the rest of us we have no idea how any of this is accomplished! lol To that point...I would LOVE to see a list of ALL the modules - or better yet a link to a MODULAR GRID setup - and a detailed "patch map" of how it is all connected - it would be a fantastic learning tool to see how/what is involved and all the hard work Jacob did to figure it out and set it all up. Great job!

      @jjjohnson834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      How are you able to do this? I have a hydrasynth

    • @Windiguana
      @Windiguana 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jjjohnson834 you go in through either of the mod inputs to the ring modulator. You can turn down the ring mod so you don't hear it, but keep the mod depth up. I'm using a mixer for my mic, then out of a send on that to the Hydra. I don't think the Hydra would accept a mic level input directly. You can latch a note without any of the oscillators playing if you wish, then apply any of the effects to your voice.

    • @australianaliens5942
      @australianaliens5942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Hey John, here is what I think happened (from an Australian Alien perspective) : I feel the title is accurate and indicates fairly clearly that this is a discussion/demonstration video - if you want to see a performance there are many on TH-cam. To be honest, I feel like these presenters balanced it really nicely; covering the functionality and signal flow in an accessible and thorough way. You didn't ask for 'my' opinion but I took the rhetorical question addressed to 'Guys' as an opening for dialogue. I hope you're safe and well and singing with synthesisers.
      Peace from Australian Aliens
