I traveled for decades as a photojournalist and commercial photographer. Oh, the stories! I got stopped by customs in Mexico City carrying 14 cases of lights, power packs, stands, and modifiers, plus the cameras and lenses on my person, all for a massive annual report assignment. The customs agent's eyes grew larger and larger as I continued to unzip case after case. Finally, my client shouted from the crowd, "American Journalista!" When I repeated it to the agent, he immediately waved his hand and said, "Go! Go! Go!!" And so the adventure began. Then there was the time in Venezuela...but that will wait another day.

7:55 I am with you Lizzie - my default is to unpack my laptop from my camera bag and nothing else.
My home airport is London Heathrow, which tends to have some of the strictest security around, and I once asked their security team if I should default to unpacking anything from my camera bag beside my laptop. They were clear that all I should unpack from the baggage I am taking through security is any laptops, tablets (I don't usually travel with a tablet) and my bagged liquids - leave everything else packed unless they ask for some additional unpacking.
The way to annoy both the screeners and fellow travellers is to unpack way more than necessary - it slows the screening process down for you and those behind you, makes you more flustered and increases the risk of mislaying something or having it stolen. I was once asked to unpack my tripod from my carry-on (I was travelling with a messenger laptop/camera bag and a rolling carry-on), but other than that I have never been asked to unpack any of my gear except my laptop.
I look forward to the introduction of the new 3D scanners which should make unpacking laptops, tablets and bagged liquids a thing of the past.
So far as not getting flustered at security goes, I take the "be very polite and recognise they are there to keep you and your fellow travellers safe" approach. Because I am a disabled person, I often take a rolling carry-on (carry-on), a laptop/camera messenger (counts as a personal item on my regular airline), and at least one piece of bagged respiratory equipment (additional medical carry-on, allowed free of charge) into security. I might also have a bag of wheelchair batteries if I have been ordered to remove them when checking in my chair: the section in the current IATA Dangerous Goods Code about lithium battery powered wheelchairs is poorly worded and interpreted differently at different airports; I believe IATA intended that securely mounted batteries should stay in the chair, be safely isolated and declared to the airline (this is an explicit exemption in the Dangerous Goods Code to the usual rule you mention that lithium batteries must not be checked under any circumstances). However, on around 40% of my flights, I am ordered to remove the batteries from the chair at check-in and carry them in the cabin as an additional free hand luggage item.
If I'm subject to secondary screening, I ask, "How can I help you to do your job today?". There is no point arguing - following their requests and cooperating makes it easier for everyone. Sometimes I've had to unpack a load of medication or respiratory equipment and allow them to check it against the medical paperwork I carry to prove the medication and equipment is essential and was prescribed to me. If you start to show a poor attitude, then they might think you are trying to hide something, whilst if you are open, honest and respectful then you should soon be repacking your bags and leaving the screening area.
What makes flying a pain for me is flying with disabilities, not flying as a photographer.
And this is why some people with vision and passion, hire creative professionals like you. So you can pack all that and do your magic!
👍 I don't travel outside the city much for work, and it doesn't really require me to shoot, but I can, for real, feel this struggle when it comes to what Camera gear I want to throw in my truck, "just in case".
My mind is always scanning the horizon and I constantly see compelling light and subjects all over the city, I am conflicted between digital, film, wide, telephoto, or should I shoot medium format. There is no client for this work so I don't have anywhere neer the responsibility you have for making these decissions, but I am compelled to shoot for myself, and it can be a distraction from the professional work I am commited too and "should be" focussed on.
There is a level of self care and organization that shines through in the videos you share giving these tips, that is very inspiring and motivational.
It's funny you mention the catch 22 of the gimbal "having it/not using it", "leaving it behind / then needing it". I think it's a pretty common human trait to want what we don't have, or find value in the utility that eludes us.
It might be a bigger stress for me as a creative personality without a clear plan or shot list to follow. I know when it comes to the work I do professionally I am less conflicted about the methods I use, I have very well developed processes and fantastic tools I know work best to get seemless results. I see that in your work. I'm curious if there is a side of life or personal creation that you struggle to find absolute clarity or dirrection with.

def some good tips. I'm terrible about packing for the trip home. on the way to my gig work everything has a spot and looks picture perfect. on the way back it's always felt so rushed. maybe these tips will help me change that.

*As a Solo Creator Myself I've been using the Peter Mckinnon 25L backpack which I use for everyday also, lol. But since I only have (2) Camera's my Sony FX30 & ZV-E10 and I'm going to slim down too this convention in Cali in June with just 3 lens, my 11mm, 15mm G Lens an 18-50mm Sigma( when I get one lmao) but I can pretty much fit everything in that Bag and never had an issue, but these are good tips*
Some helpful tips ive learned over the past 4 years doing mostly domestic US travel for photoshoots.
It helps a ton using travel credit cards with your airline for free checked bags/priority boarding. That can help alleviate the stress of possibly not having overhead bin storage, sometimes just the amount of batteries is enough to force the airlines to have your carry on in cabin anyways. Having a CC with a specific airline can also help during a delayed flight, getting automatically onto the next flight on a better seat instead of needing to scramble to re-book your flight.
Global entry/precheck etc... is worth every penny. Security has been much more forgiving with gear and they seems to not mind it as much as the general security lines.
Some airlines have shipping services as well like Southwestcargo. You can ship your gear a few days ahead and have pickup at your destination airport. This is really only needed when you're shipping large amounts of production gear, tho. Happy travels

In uk you have to empty your camera bag as lens and other gear mess up the security peoples heads. I do this all the time. Once I emptied everything out but forgot some batteries and wires which where in a small pouch in my bag I nearly caused melt down at security expecilly when they kept asking me WHATS IN THE BAG and I kept saying nothing 😂 until I looked at my gear and said Batteries and charging cables 🙈🙈🙈

The issue with a roller camera bag is if the airline forces you to check it at the gate due to limited space. One time, I had step aside and swap all my stuff between my bags to prevent my gear from being checked into belly of the plane.
I literally paid for TSA Pre-Check just so I don't have to worry about unloading my shit from my bag.

But what about us carry on-only extended intl. travelers. I have to stuff my 35, action cam and drone gear (hobbyist) in my personal bag and then clothing in my small roller carry-on bag (no more checked bags). I was hoping you would have a secret to packing without checking luggage. Guess I’ll keep stuffing…
