- They were likely Rock’s first supergroup and it all started when these virtuosos who went by the name of CREAM starring Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker all took in a Jimi Hendrix concert, and the bassist Jack Bruce was so juiced with inspiration by what he saw, he went home and created one of rock music’s most familiar and magical riffs. Sunshine of Your Love One that gets stuck in your head for days and that’s a good thing. However when they showed the guaranteed hit to the label head, legend Ahmet Ertegun he hated it. He thought it was crap. Some famous artists outside of the band had to talk him into putting it out. The supergroup was only together for a couple of years and they almost killed each other but their music will last a millennia creating genres and subgenera’s in the process. The story is next.

It’s time for another edition of Number One in our Hearts where we breakdown a classic song that was so great it should’ve been a number one hit and this one is a no brainer.
Many regard CREAM as the first supergroup of Rock. CREAM was an interesting, complicated, and audacious trio consisting of drummer/vocalist Ginger Baker, guitarist/vocalist Eric Clapton, and bassist/lead vocalist Jack Bruce.
Although they were a unit for a mere 2 and a half years and 4 albums, CREAM’S powerful confluence of musicianship produced some of the most artistically influential music ever recorded- highlighted by their highest charting achievement entitled “Sunshine of Your Love.”
When the three musicians began their gravitation to form a group, Clapton had already established a reputation as one of England’s finest blues guitarists with his stints in the Yardbirds and John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Baker and Bruce played together in the Graham Bond Organization.There was mutual admiration for their respective talents, in spite of character assaults, and vicious on-stage quarreling between Baker & Bruce that was audible to the crowd while they were in the Graham Bond Organization.
Baker actually fired Bruce at one point, but Jack kept showing up at the gigs to perform. The discord between the two came to a head when Baker threatened Bruce at knifepoint. After a Bluesbreakers gig, Baker took Clapton for a drive, and asked Eric if he wanted to join a new group be wanted to form. Clapton accepted Baker’s invitation, provided that Jack Bruce was in the band as the lead singer. Baker was shocked by Clapton’s stipulation, given his intense friction with Bruce.

I consider myself one of the fortunate few who got to see Cream on their farewell tour at the coliseum in Chicago. It was on a whim, some girl asked me if I wanted to go to a concert with her, I said what concert? She says "Cream" and I'm in. I don't even think my mother knew I was going.😜 Greatest experience ever. Mountains of Marshall amps a packed house, people were outside dancing in the street. I followed that up by seeing Blind Faith and Eric solo, but the Cream concert is at the very top of my personal concert list.🤠👍👍👍
I remember the Summer of 68 in major turmoil as my mother died in 64 and my father almost died right in front of my face of a massive heart attack and stroke at the same time and he was only 37 and I was 15I was a rough summer for me but I remember loving this song.Thank you for reminding me how great Cream was.

Cream as a “supergroup” is quite the understatement! I’m old enough to remember the amount of media hype all the way back from the day they were first announced. They innovated and brought blues riffs to the next level, and were so well received - until the tragic breakup.

EV REE DAE, Sunshine of Your Love was playing when I went in, the whole time I was there, and still playing when I was outside. Sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. After a while I grew to despise it. Twilight Zone made an episode about it. I think it was Mr. French who was the host of the bad guy who finally realized what his awesome afterlife really was.

I was there -- I worked in radio at the time -- loved Cream and always will... but wiki isn't right -- the Yardbirds were the 1st supergroup -- we knew that then....and time has borne that out. Hey, Eric Clapton CAME from the Yardbirds. Just sayin...
There is no doubt that Cream was considered the first Rock and Roll supergroup. To this day, my favorite Album from them is still "Disreali Gears". "Sunshine of Your Love" reached #2, in L.A. in June 1968, (#5 on the Billboard Hot 100) and was on 93KHJ Boss Radio charts for 11 weeks which was astoundingly a long time, in the day, This was part of the Golden Age of Rock.

Cream was actually the only period I loved Eric Clapton! He always excelled when he played heavy rock with a band who challenged him! On his own, he kinda gravitated to very old style blues that we have heard thousands of times! Or MOR pop-semi rock! I would recommend the DVD and album of Clapton and Steve Winwood at Madison Square Garden! A very good album when they jammed together!

There was NOTHING remotely that heavy for its time. Blue Cheer, Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath were still 2 years distant. Even 'Sunshine' wouldn't hit the charts for months.
Greeny was simply an incomparable one off in so many respects - arguably still the greatest of his generation.

The first Cream song I ever heard was “Tales of Brave Ulysses”. The world stood still! I had never heard anything like it! When Cream came to town I bought my ticket. Jack Bruce had the most powerful voice I have ever heard. And Ginger Baker sounded like at least three drummers all by himself.

Cream is my definition of psychedelic, rock/blues. You really can here Hendrix' style in Sunshine of My Love. They came together ,created the best music at the perfect time. Still holds up today.
Both Cream and Hendrix are deeply missed.
It's one of the first songs I learned on the guitar. As a millennial Clapton fan, I love this song and it's simplistic, yet enduring, rhythm and multiple ways to play it.
I think I was 15 back in 1977 when I found this record in my mom's record stack -it was already "old" by then, but I LOVED it. It's amazing the staying power of great music like this -cheers...
I remember hearing this song when I was 16 working as an apprentice painter hearing it on 2SM a Sydney radio station in 1972,I was right into Deep Purple then but when I heard Sunshine of your Love it blew me away!! I eventually became a lover of the dynamic trio Cream,back then it would take years for overseas hit songs to be released in Australia but not now.

Since you asked for requests: staying with the power trio theme, a deep dive into ZZ Top would be interesting. From their early roots, their formation, their dominance in the 70's - 80's. Billy Gibson's incredible knowledge of music history, and what they are now since Dusty Hill has exited the stage.
Also, a deep dive into the mind and writing talent of Neil Peart. I agree completely about how far music has fallen into disposable here today, gone tomorrow dumpster fires. But Neil's higher plain thinking, writing processes, and intense intellect has not been talked about near enough, even by Neil himself. I fancy myself a writer, but with serious writers block for about the last decade. Another reason why your channel means so much to me. You too have that way of communicating intrinsic values & knowledge in a higher, deeper experience. Thanks Adam!
We were BLESSED in the aly 90's to have 4th row center seats for 3 1/2 HOURS of just Eric Clapton.Every hit from white room through I've got a rock n roll heart! The only concernt I had been to sober.Thank You God for the tickets and for sobriety.

I bought the 45 right after I first heard Sunshine of Your Love and put it on automatic repeat on my parents' turntable. I think it played 24 times in a row before I finally turned it off. Later, I discovered the album version, which was even better. Surprisingly, I couldn't overplay it! SoYL remains a favorite to this day!
It’s that type of song you never get tired of.
Cream influenced so many musicians that followed them. All 3 of them were superb musicians in their own right and they had to be, to fill the space as just a trio. This era was instrumental (no pun intended) in the evolution of rock and provided a foundation the for music of the 70s and beyond. Thanks, Adam!

Was just teaching myself this song last week...it is a testament to the wisdom of keeping it simple...once you get yer tone right, the whole song is right there to play...always a treat when it comes on the radio!

I had the once in a lifetime privilege of playing bass in a band that Ginger Baker sat in with. This was in Hawaii in the early '90s. On the island of Oahu, there's a polo field in Mokuleia, and Ginger would come to town for several weeks at a time to play in the polo games. These polo games had an entertainment tent set up where local rock bands would play, and sometimes the promoters could persuade Ginger to sit in. One Sunday, my band got the polo field gig, and I guess Ginger was in the mood to play because he joined us for two songs. Starting with a safe bet, we played a Chicago blues number, and Ginger fell right in, but seemed a bit bored. When that song finished, he said "Ok, now you follow me" and he went into some kind of African type of rhythm. At first, we didn't know what the f**k to play with what he was doing, but then a mental lightbaulb switched on and we realized Ginger was doing a variation on the Bo Diddley beat, so we all went into our best Bo Diddley riffs and it fit like a glove, turning into a jam that went on for six or seven minutes. Ginger didn't say much afterwards, but I think at the end he was at least in a good mood. Talk about a brush with greatness!

I was lucky to go to two Cream concerts. I have all their music and still listen to it often. One of my favorites. Being at one of their concerts truly transported you to another dimension.

Right!! Besides Cream at the Shrine Arena; some of the loudest I've heard: the WHO, BLUE CHEER, FOGHAT, WEST, BRUCE & LAING, MAHOGANY RUSH, SLASH, & YNGWIE MALMSTEEN!!
You covered it so well. That bit about the drum beats... it's so important to the sound, but few coverbands will really do it. The guitars will just naturally fall in with the drums. It's just hard not to play the way most do. These guys did it right no matter whose idea.
As for the rift between Jack and Ginger, they kept getting back together in band after band their whole lives. They really were brothers, and I think you hit the nail on the head about brothers fighting.
It's truly amazing how some groups (super or otherwise) can produce a catalogue of hits in such a short time. They're like Supernovas, intense but short lived. CCR, which you just covered, Cream today..... amazing songs from sensational talent.... I have to mention Bobby McFerrin's version of this song.... I love it.

I didn’t know he covered it. Probably because he’s a true one hit wonder.
One of the really annoying things about the producers of "Sunshine of Your Love" was that when it was released as a single, they deleted Eric's guitar solo via sound editing. Apparently, there was some stupid "rule" that a guitar solo would make a song less marketable or commercial. So, the mainstream AM stations played the shortened version, while the FM "progressive rock" stations (as they were then known) played the slightly longer, immortal version we've all known and loved.

I never heard 'Blue Moon' in Clapton's lead break before. Now I always will! It's little bits like that that keep me coming back for new revelations, in my morning drowse. These guys and their 'Psychedelic Hogwash' were an irresistible inspiration to the teenaged me and my little brother. "Sunshine of Your Love" was one of the first songs we attempted to learn, and working up our lame little version gave us a whole new direction for our previously The Ventures-inspired band.
What a transcendent time it was - Hendrix! The Who! Steppenwolf! The Byrds! Our beloved Beatles, trailblazing unlimited possibilities in Pop...Take me back, Prof - make me fire up the ol' turntable and blast off to spend the day in the greatest, most eclectic era in Pop music.

When I was working as a DJ in the 70s, that was the first time I was really listening closely to their stuff and picked that up at once. But it is subtle and a lot of rock fans had never heard Blue Moon so they really weren't aware of it.
Sunshine Of Your love is one of my favorite guitar solos.

I will argue that "White Room" was a deeper and heavier song than "Sunshine"... That song really resonates with me, I was 8 years old when it came out, and it floored me!! That and Zeppelin's 1st album shortly thereafter. This era will never happen again, and it gives me comfort to know that I lived at the same time all this was happening... Great Summation Professor.

Disraeli Gears was a great album. Every song on it was good, even "mothers Lament". For me "Sunshine of Your Love" was just one of the top 3 tunes on a superb album. Ok, that's just me.
Look I'm a huge Clapton fan. He is one of the very best of the blues guitar players entire world, and that gravely singing voice just makes him better.
Cream was the first power trio, and set the standard to which ALL others are measured, even today. ;-)

Cream were a great band and Jack was a great singer , but it is a pity that more people did not buy Jack's solo albums . They are all great and feature great musicians .

King's X shot out of my speakers like a bolt of sonic goodness, I will never forget hearing them for the first time and feeling my entire spirit lift toward the Heavens! Incredible power and beauty, they are the sound I've always had in my head, come to life! Gretchen Goes To Nebraska belongs with Revolver, Zep 4, Sticky Fingers, Aja, Moving Pictures, Dark Side of The Moon etc. as one of the greatest rock albums ever created! Dig your mention of them! Had the pleasure to open for Kings X in 2000 or 2001.. they performed a flawless 2 1/2 hour set.. no bad notes.. no missed harmonies.. my bandmates and I were mesmerized.. it was nice to pick up many of their fans that night who never knew we existed.. I've opened for 100's of other major acts.. but the compliments I heard from the fans of Kings X make me the proudest of everything we were doing at that time.. and to this day over 20 years later !!

Felix was amazing man!! He led 50 piece orchestras!! I saw him play many times and was amazing with Mountain! And his work here with Cream!! All these guys were amazing!! I'm so lucky to have seen them all!! I remember turning a lot of people onto to Ginger. I would get into drummer arguments and mention Ginger and kids would look at me like I was from Mars!! And go who!
I was 7yrs old,in Spokane, Wa. when I first heard this song, it caught me immediately. Never forgot, it is my go to cure for earworms, that Jack Bruce riff,perfect
Cream is certainly one of the quintessential rock supergroups - and then Clapton and Baker go on to form Blind Faith after Cream dissolved! Unfortunately that was even more short-lived than Cream. People are loving to use Clapton as a punching bag these days and even deriding him as "not so great" (I actually saw that repeated multiple times in a Reddit thread - ridiculous), but he is clearly a defining guitarist of the 60s and 70s and is better than most in his old age. Bruce was an INCREDIBLE bassist - watch him play the fretless bass and be amazed. Baker was thunder personified on the drums - all of his fiery temper and anger came out through his sticks. They were a fantastic lightning strike of a group for their short life.
Clapton is a deeply troubled and complicated person but anybody who thinks his playing is not great, simply has no idea and is just pretending to know what they are talking about.
Ginger has said that it's jazz coming out of him on the drums.
Another thing Ginger has said, on the 2005 DVD.
"Me and Jack are jazz men, Eric is blues, errr same thing"

Phenomenal line-up of 'The Billboard Hot 100' as it simply SMASHES anything even remotely approaching what this generation defines music to be in the endless lack of creativity and regression into emptiness having no purpose what-so-ever. LOVE ALL FOUR OF THE TOP 5 THAT WEEK. We were so fortunate to live in the most prolific time of the birth of so many cross-overs and genre of music and art in the history of the world with maybe the exception of The Renaissance and Baroque Periods. Stupendous. GOSH, YOU CRACK ME UP!!!

I absolutely love Cream and they definitely sparked my love for power trios that burns to this day. Cream, Rush, Triumph, King's X, Seduce, etc.
Sunshine of Your Love was my introduction to alternate beats and while practicing this song for a while on bass, I was able to train my brain to be able to sing melodies and play opposing bass lines. It really honed my craft for the bar crowd who couldn't care less how we sounded after three or four beers!😂
I'm actually surprised Cream lasted as long as they did given the fact that by all accounts, Ginger was a surly git. And that's a nice way to describe him!

I was mesmerized the same way you were, Prof, the first time I heard it. I was about eight when it first came out.
While watching this excellent episode, it occurred to me that Jazz musicians and Jazz music has either directly or indirectly influenced the course of Rock music. Ginger Baker and Charlie Watts were both Jazz Drummers prior to joining rock and blues bands. John Bonham and Neil Peart were influenced by the big band ear Jazz drummers Gene Krupa, Buddy Rich and Max Roach. Hal Blaine (Wrecking Crew) was a Jazz Drummer, taught by the same drummer that taught Gene Krupa. Many of the Wrecking Crew session players came from Jazz bands. There is a school of thought that learning Jazz techniques is a good way to improve as a musician. I know that it helped me to improve. 🎸😎
Phil Collins mentioned Elvin Jones and one or two other jazz drummers as influences.
'60's and 70's rock was the music of my father. I too compared music of my time, growing up in the '80's and '90's, to the '60's and '70's. I personally believe those were the best years of music and I still feel that way. Thanks for covering Cream. The night I got home, on leave, after graduating basic training/AIT in 1995 was I got into my truck, put on Cream/Sunshine, and headed straight to the beach with a 6-pack. Great memory!!!
My fave Cream song has always been "White Room." Eric Clapton also has a great sad love ballad titled "River Of Tears" from his solo career.

I was a junior in college. I would blast Hendrix's "Foxey Lady" from the 8 track in my 66 GTO. Then along came Creme, I never wet back.
Totally makes sense that the bass line was written on a double bass. One of the alltime great bass lines.
The 3 of them playing at their reunion cements their legendary status, like Zeppelin and the O2 reunion. "Move over kiddos, let us show you how its really done."
I saw Cream in their 2005 Reunion at Madison Square Garden in Nov 2005.
Flawless performance. Just great.
They briefly reunited in 2005 for 4 concert shows which sold out in under one hour. They sounded as good as ever.

My first rendition of "Sunshine of Your Love" was the *24 Nights* version that Eric Clapton performed at Albert Hall in 1990. I always knew that I enjoyed hearing it, well before I realized anything about its Cream origins. To a great extent, it was the Cream original (along with the original "White Room") that helped me decide that I wanted to be a guitar player myself. Later on, I realized how thick I was to not pick up on my own that Clapton was playing the Melody from "Blue Moon" at the start of his solo, quotation that he has Faithfully repeated each time he's ever performed it my good friend Jim wants play me a 60s compilation that included the radio edit of this song; it felt so empty without the full-length guitar solo.
The deepest level of irony regarding Ahmad Ertegun initially rejecting "Sunshine" have to do with an interview he conducted with VH1 regarding the whole *Disraeli Gears* LP, saying that it's a piece of music that one should be willing to play partly loud, even if they wake the neighbors. (Sometime, I'll feed brazen enough to try that, even though I live in a New York City apartment.) In the time since he made that silly assertion that Jack shouldn't have been the lead singer, I hope Mr are to gun was made conscious of every other bass playing frontman in the rock music spectrum, people like Peter Cetera, John Lodge, Geddy Lee, Sting, Randy Meisner - hey, The Beatles were still together when this song was new, and someone forgot to tell him about Paul McCartney.

I still get pumped every time I hear this song. It hasn’t lost a bit of its impact after all these years.
Before I ever heard this song, I heard the Black Sabbath song N.I.B. which has a suspiciously similar riff. Now let's think about that. One of the most influential bands in Rock and Roll and Heavy Metal, Black Sabbath, showed that they were obviously influenced by this song. Ozzy eventually did a cover of Sunshine in a more recent covers album. Fantastic song and Jack's vocals are incredibly underrated.
Well, Geezer Butler did write the bass riff and Jack Bruce was one of his biggest role models.
Jack Bruce was very underrated as an all around musician.
His amazing talents can never be denied.
This world was sadly for too many years, far too guitar-centric. A bass player and/or all-round talent like Jack Bruce could never hope to get proper recognition in the 60s or 70s. Thank heavens that we then got the 80s when Billy Sheehan and Flea turned all that around.
I saw Eric Clapton perform a twelve minute version at Knebworth. He had Ray Cooper on percussion do an amazing solo during the song. For the first time I sat up and took notice of Cream

Great to give these exemplary musicians their due, particularly Jack Bruce.
I remember being in the record store, which I think was in JC Penny's, if you can believe that. But I saw the album cover of "Disraeli Gears" and bought it just based on the cover (I know). It was very different from what i was listening too at the time. Needed to adjust to it, but then really began to like it. Starting with "Strange Brew" was a unique style to my ear. And really like "Tales of Brave Ulysses". Cool album.
I really like Tales of Brave Ulysses too, was just listening to it a couple of days ago. I remember buying The Alladin Sane album at Woolco, the days when so many stores had record, book, fabric and plant sections. I’m getting old!

I've bought several albums based on the covers!
One of my all time favorites I bought when I was 15. It was a 1960 Chess label record, with a smiling black man riding a scooter with a funky rectangular electric guitar slung over his shoulder. He's holding one hand up to make it look like he's holding a giant calling card that says, "Have Guitar... Will Travel". I loved everything about that image, but what I heard on that record changed my world!
It was the great Bo Diddley, the artist who never got his due even though he's been copied by so many. That album would be one of my top ten deserted island music I'd take with me. It's funny ("Say Man" is a hoot!), classic, and no one plays that jangly Diddley guitar style better than the original!
I have that album framed and hanging on my wall, next to my Rockpile album that's autographed by all the members (I'm a huge Nick Lowe fan).
I miss album art and all the neat inserts that came with them. Ahhh, that fresh vinyl smell when we'd slice the shrink wrap for that virgin spin!
This is a number one for sure ! When I was a kid it was on every radio station all the time . No matter what channel you turned to Sunshine of Your Love was on and I couldn’t have been happier ..

I love Eric Clapton & Cream, but I couldn’t disagree more. The birth of Metal was February, Friday the 13th, 1970. Black Sabbath’s self titled debut album and the evil sounding tri tone riff of the song Black Sabbath. Cream, Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix & Deep Purple contributed to the birth of Metal, but Sabbath alone went through the birthing pains. IMO
Close but your opinion is slightly off considering sabbath has admitted stealing Hendrix riff for their hit. Meaning that Hendrix was first , and if you do back to the kinks. Dave may have been the intro to the metal sound and covent actually was considered the first metal…. I know what you’re saying and I believe that deep purple was the ignition to metal. All opinions of course because the actual first time metal was introduced was probably somewhere else that we aren’t even aware of. Lol. I hope my opinion doesn’t anger yours. 🤘
I remember this song because our parents played the "oldies" station all the time.... But I remember a Miller Genuine Draft commercial where it was used and the group of guys were golfing and they were discussing great songs... This was the last one they brought up and they bowed their heads in a moment of silence.

Except helter skelter was done by the beatles in 68 and was almost thrash. Its far harder than anything on sabbaths first album.

What? I NEVER knew that anybody disputed, or would dispute that. Nobody with even the flimsiest knowledge of drumming history is unaware of Baker's importance.
Baker's percussion on Sunshine of Your Love is outstanding as well, for years the guitar dominated my love of this song but in the last 10 the percussion has taken over for me, I love the whole song.
I was in Junior high school in the late sixties when I first heard Cream and became a big fan. I still am.
Had no idea Cream only lasted 2 and a half years...born in 66 only came across their music after 1973 when older brothers of friends introduced me to it all. Cream definately one of the best. I feel free is my favorite, almost of all rock songs.

Great video Adam! Cream was & is my favorite band. Cream is the ONLY band I can think of in which EVERY BAND MEMBER is constantly cited by other rock legends as being their major influence.
Jack Bruce is my favorite musician of all time. His playing influenced so many bass guitarists and his singing influenced so many rock singers. Its clear that Paul Rogers & Lou Gramm, 2 of the best ever, were both influenced by Bruce's phrasing. Meanwhile, Bruce's bass playing was so original and influential that you rarely watch an interview with a bass player without hearing Bruce's name mentioned.
The next time you listen to Crossroads, listen to Bruce playing a bass solo under Clapton's guitar solo without losing his place in time. Sunshine is a great song. Good job Professor!

It was 1969, as a fledgling teenager, when I heard Cream for the first time. Up to then I’d little interest in music. I was at my friend Ger Costelloe’s house doing homework together when he put Best of Cream on the mono record player. I felt like I had an epiphany. I was amazed and totally blown away. He followed Cream up with This Was by Jethro Tull and my undying love of both groups began. The next time I felt a similar jolt when hearing an album for the first time was eight years later when I heard the first Clash album.
You Sir, are an Amazing Storyteller. I got goosebumps when I heard you were talking about Cream. One of my all time Faves!! I was 11years old when Sunshine of your Love came out. It was certainly a game changer.

When I was a junior in high school I was transferred from a school in Southern California to a school in Coolage Arizona. At the end of the year there was a talent show. The unquestioned first place winner was a band of young native Americans called "The Richard Notah Band". They played " Sunshine of Your Love"! They were so good one could not tell they were not Cream! Fabulous!! 🤔😁😆💋💖💋💖😎
