    As someone who has really gotten into modding certain aspects of my own consoles in the last couple of years, I LOVED this episode. This episode really felt like a throwback to some of your older episodes!

    I'll be honest. You guys have one of the best channels on TH-cam. Personally, it's nice to have older guys discussing games instead of 20 year olds...and you tackle subjects that are away from mainstream topics and instead appeal to the hardcore gamers. Keep up the good work. I can't believe I didn't find you guys sooner.

    To everyone saying "You should have done RGB!" etc ad nauseam please keep in mind that this is not what the video is about. This video is about modding consoles, not specifically about which signal gives the best quality. We have already covered this topic in a MUCH older episode. Check it out:
    th-cam.com/video/Ip6WuOvK8EU/w-d-xo.htmlm13s
    And yes, it sucks that the US never got RGB like PAL countries did. :(

    • @0innerself0

      Oh come on, we got RGB but also 50Hz in the balance ! You can't have it all ;)

      I just think this insight into modding was very interesting, and necessary in the Duo's case. Thanks guys! Keep up the greatness!

      On a 15Khz CRT TV, at a low "scan lined" resolution,a perfectly calibrated S-Video set up should deliver a picture quality which "should be" very hard to distinguish from RGB (I do side by side comparisons for friends all the time by the way) but, if that is not the case right out of the box, it wouldn`t surprise me.
      Not only problems might arise with S-Video when picture settings are wrongly set-up (luma, chroma and sharpness all have ideal values which should not be set either higher or lower to avoid noise, and ringing) but even with the best values the picture might still come out poor compared to RGB.
      The quality of the S-video cable might have something to do with it and sure the quality of the TV itself (specially as far as S-Video is concerned I would stick with Sony, Toshiba and Panasonic) but most probably, even then the picture quality might still not be crystal clear, and that has to do with the TVs internal settings accessible ONLY through the service menu.
      The latter are generally regulated from factory with Interlaced video signals in mind (for low res scanlined images they must be regulated differently, modern Sony TVs for example have a dedicated Svideo section in the service menu).
      Some systems output dirtier signals anyway, for example, for some reason the PS1s after the first SCPH-1000 which had a direct S-video out (and basically all the PS2s), don`t deliver a perfectly clean signal even with the best cable (some problems here and there, not present in RGB or on the SCPH-1000 S-video out when coonected to a perfectly calibrated set through a good quality cable).
      P.S
      the above doesn`t apply If you are passing the signal to a LCD TV (or other kind of upscaling device) but that should not be the point, considering that up-conversion ruins the retro picture anyway (you do want to play retrogames on CRTs, with no streaks left on fas moving objects, no blurriness, no hyper sharpness where everything looks pixelated, and no fake scanlines which are as thick or thicker than the colored lines...).

    • @westofthemoon
      @westofthemoon 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dave Reen I agree for the most part; I have my pal n64 plugged into my crt through a custom made cable and the picture quality is fantastic but I do prefer the clarity of colors on the systems that I have hooked up through rgb scart. Also, in Sweden anyway, Asian crt tv's don't come as highly recommended as German made tv's. We have a 27" Tandberg Select and the picture quality is just stunning... an added bonus is that we found it in the trash room so we didn't even pay 1kr for it :)

    • @BrySkye
      @BrySkye 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's pretty much just down to the US favoring S-Video until Component cables came around, whereas Europe adopted the SCART connection that made RGB mainstream to the masses much, much earlier on.
      The Sega Saturn actually shipped with RGB Scart only, which caused problems for people holding onto older TV's.
      For all the benefit of RGB and an increased vertical resolution, the amount of games that ran 17.5% slower AND had a letterboxed display with squashed graphics doesn't balance things out. :P

      What is sad is that in 2019, the new games are slowly converting to strictly digital distribution. I admit, the one game I have a physical copy I have, I would easily charge an arm and a leg for once it becomes clear that physical copies are harder and harder to come by,....Transformers: Devastation...I even kept the "insert" advertising paper for Combiner Wars Titan Class Devastator that came with it. It's for XBox1 and, other than graphical elements, probably is totally a 1 to 1 compared to the PS4 edition. Fact is physical copy is the only way you can get the game do to Activision losing the Transformers licence which is sad as there isn't very many good Transformers games in the world...(IIRC Angry Video Game Nerd or some other TH-camr covered said topics as many of the early titles were essentially ranked from total turds to not very good)

    Omg that old camcorder video brought back SO many memories. I used to love going to that store!! My grandfathers not around anymore but he used to take me there. It was our special thing we did on the weekends. Thanks for the great video and the awesome memories of the store and my grandfather.

    • @GameSack

      That's great! I'm glad someone else who used to frequent Power Play Games in Littleton got to enjoy the footage. Do you remember Bill? There were two other employees that lasted almost as long as he did. Al (tall, skinny guy) and Luis (Asian guy). After Bill left, a guy named Matt came in to manage the store who was from Gamer's Paradise where I rented the Neo Geo system. I think the holy grail would be if one of the kids in the video recognized themselves and watch Game Sack!

  • @PeteSkerritt
    @PeteSkerritt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +105

    This was fantastic. Loved the segments with Joe & Bill just chatting about old times while Bill was just doing his thing. I can totally see why Bill was management material for a game store-- super-personable, very bright, knowledgeable, and handy. I also loved the old-school video shoot; I was totally trying to ID the games that were on display behind Bill.
    Modding is pretty fascinating stuff. I don't have the understanding or skill with which to do it, but it amazes me what can be done with older hardware to make it even better than the original design. It's also interesting to know about the leak issues with DUO and Turbo Express hardware-- I totally learned something, and that's fantastic.
    If the end of this video is a hint for the next episode, I'm totally excited. Opposite perspective (SNES fan looking at Genesis and vice-versa) could make for some fireworks!
    Thanks again for the hours of entertainment you provide with these videos. A lot of work goes into making them just right, between editing and effects and writing... and I certainly appreciate what you do to bring us the final product.

      @Joshua Paul That is true. Thanks for the insight! But I always ponder if somehow someone would run their Genesis/ MD or NES wirelessly (in NTSC analog standard), what would the result be like? I'd assume that you're not going to get the 60fps because of broadcast limitation with the whole interlaced video thing...

    Great video guys, but I would suggest for people looking to get the best video and audio from their retro consoles to go to retrorgb.com. Some upgrades don't need modding to be done, sometimes it's just having the right cables. For example, for the Sega Genesis model 1, you can get a scart (european format) cable with audio (to get stereo audio from the front) and a scart to HDMI converter. It is a bit pricey like 80 in total, but the games look amazing on an HDTV.

    Great video Joe and Dave. I find comfort in knowing that there are still people out there that are still die hard fans of the older consoles, modded or not. It is definitely good that you know somebody who can modify your consoles for you. Watching this video makes me want to learn how to do things like this so that I can modify my consoles for the greater good. Keep it up with the videos, you'll always have a faithful subscriber here.

    What a fantastic episode. I think you found the perfect balance of just enough tech stuff to keep people like me interested without it becoming a simple "how-to" video. The funny references to your past history with Bill, and Joe's random commentary during the modding were both a lot of fun. I think this is a great example of what makes Game Sack a top notch show - interesting, entertaining and informative. Great job!

    I think you guys missed a big opportunity with this one. When I saw the title, I thought we were going to see a plethora of different mods. Screen and battery mods for handhelds, audio and video mods for various consoles, etc. Instead we got to watch an odd gentleman slowly replace capacitors for 30 minutes.
    And μ is a Greek letter, spelled "mu" in English and pronounced like "mew". It's the metric prefix for "micro", meaning one-millionth.

      We didn't misinform anyone. I was joking and Bill said he correct information. I always give Bill a hard time just for fun, Could you not see me smiling when I said "UF"? There's zero harm in saying M instead of the Greek thing. I mean it IS Micro Fared. Your criticism isn't really that, it's more nit-picking really. We cannot be held responsible for what YOU think our episode will be about based on the title. Also, this isn't necessarily the only show about modding we will ever do. And we didn't just replace capacitors for half an hour. Did you even watch the episode or just skip around? So far the very large majority of people are liking this episode. You're in the minority here. I'm sure there will be others who don't like the episode. There always are. But we don't try to please everybody. That's impossible. We just do as we do and will continue to do so. Thanks for watching!

    • @mrhoeivo
      @mrhoeivo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Game Sack A lower-case m stands for milli-, meaning one-thousanth, and an upper-case M stands for mega-. meaning one million. So yes, there is harm in saying M instead of "the Greek thing."
      I'm glad to hear you might do another modding video. I hope you do. Hopefully the next one will have a bit more meat on the bone. I'm sure the majority of your viewers would love that too.

    I work on computers for a living and I've done a lot of soldering with those. Which is odd why I only recently started working on consoles. Not too long ago I swapped the GBA SP 101 guts into a 001 NES model. I put a newer LCD in a Nomad. I've repaired a lot of capacitors and bad traces on old consoles. Right now I have a few projects waiting in my workroom. I've got a Genesis that I need to add stereo output to the back since I hate the y-adapter coming out of the front. As well as disable the composite encoder. I have a GBA that needs a backlit screen and a glass screen cover. A GBC that needs some work. A Game Gear that needs a cap replacement, like so many of them do. That's just to name a few.
    Bill seems like a cool guy and it looks like he does good work! Wish I had someone I knew like that here locally for when I'm lazy. This is one of my favorite videos of yours. I don't care if you break it... it's Dave's. I love Console 5. Been using them for a while now. That sure brought the sound back and as usual the S-Video is quite an improvement, on both systems. Then again, composite isn't really hard to improve on.
    Also, I thought the VA2.3, 3, and 4 weren't bad. Then again, they're tough to find. Does Bill sell those OPAmps by chance?

    I don't really agree with what you guys did here. I mean I'm not against modding consoles. Its just that the Turbo Duo is quite a rare and valuable console that its almost like a sin that you modified it with S-Video. I understand doing it to more common consoles like the Snes and Genesis because their a dime a dozen but for a system this rare I would have left it original. Maybe its just me good video all around as usual though.

    • @GameSack
      @GameSack  10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      Our perspective of it is that it's up to who owns the console. If you want to keep yours untouched then that's great! Bill says that everything can be undone, though. Even the holes. Not sure exactly how that'd be accomplished but that's what he tells me. But hey at least we didn't change the color, put in a BLUE LED and give it racing stripes and a wing/spoiler. :)

    • @davidmaglioli7048
      @davidmaglioli7048 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well said. I guess in the end it does benefit the console. having S-Video did give it much better picture quality. Though why not give it HDMI, unless S-Video was optimal given the hardware limitations. I know HDMI conversions don't really work well with some systems, and just a quick question about Super Nintendo if you don't mind. I have two Snes consoles both do the same thing. When I pause a game like Super Mario World and the music stops I get a buzzing sound from my tv that gradually gets louder, Also some of the music is out of tune or some parts of the music don't play (this has only happened with Super Mario World). Could it be that my sound capacitors in both systems are dying or could it be something with the cartridge or the AV cables? I tried another game the music was fine but the buzzing still happened when the music stopped after I paused. I don't hear it while the music is playing.
