  • Crusade vs Ottoman Empire | Battle of Nicopolis 1396 | Epic Total War Cinematic |
The Battle of Nicopolis represents a critical juncture in late medieval European and Ottoman history, illustrating the shifting balance of power in favor of the Ottomans in Southeast Europe. Initiated by a call from Sigismund of Hungary, the crusade aimed to push back against the encroaching Ottoman forces that threatened Christian Europe's eastern frontiers. Despite assembling a sizable and diverse force, the European coalition suffered from strategic missteps, overconfidence, and a lack of coherent command, culminating in a disastrous defeat. The battle showcased the effective use of disciplined Ottoman infantry and cavalry tactics, including the strategic deployment of janissaries and the effective use of light cavalry for flanking maneuvers. The aftermath of the battle led to significant captivities, ransoms, and the further cementation of Ottoman control over the Balkans, setting the stage for future conflicts and the eventual siege of Constantinople in 1453. The Battle of Nicopolis not only marks a pivotal moment in the decline of the Crusading movement but also highlights the rise of the Ottoman Empire as a dominant power in Southeast Europe.

You are describing the war incorrectly, we have very clear historical documents. First of all, when this union was formed, the Ottoman army was at war in Anatolia. The Ottoman army had just set out when the Crusaders united and began to besiege Nicopolis. The armies consisted of the following states. France, England, Genoa, Venice, the Knights of Rhodes, Bohemia, the German principalities, Wallachia, Naples, Aragon, Castile, Poland, Switzerland, Bosnians, Burgundians, Hungarians, Teutonic Knights and many counts and feudal lords participated in this war. The war happened like this. A group of Hungarians entered from the Carpathians and the Crusaders went to Vidin. From here they united and advanced towards Nicopolis by plundering. The Crusader fleet also reached the Danube and entered the port. Two days later, land troops came and surrounded Niğbolu, which was defended by Doğan Bey. Meanwhile, Beyazıt, who set out, crossed the Şipka pass and united with all his troops in Tirnova on 22 September. From here he set out to Nicopolis and arrived in Nicopolis on 24 September. In the Crusader army, 1st Mercia went out to explore, taking Wallachian troops and some French and German knights with him. Meanwhile, they encountered the Ottoman Akıncı forces. In the conflict between the two units, the Mercian forces were victorious and the Ottoman vanguard units withdrew. On September 25, both sides took their place on the battlefield. Although there are many conflicting figures from many sources about army numbers, the figure stated by reliable historians and confirmed by modern historians is as follows. It is almost certain that the Crusaders consisted of 17,000 people, the Hungarians and Wallachians 15,000, for a total of 32,000 people, and the Ottomans, including auxiliary forces, consisted of 20,000 people. The formations of the armies are as follows. At the front lines of the Crusader army were heavily armored cavalry, mostly composed of crusaders and noblemen. There were Hungarian soldiers and Germans on the second line, Wallachians on the left, and Hungarian cavalry on the right. In the front ranks of the Ottomans were light cavalry raiders under the command of Evrenos Bey. Right behind them, there were the Azaps, the Archers, and the Janissaries, whose numbers were VERY LOW AT THE TIME, who set up positions by hammering stakes. Because it had only been a few years since the janissary corps was established. On the right was Prince Suleiman with his Rumelian sipahis, and on the left was Prince Mustafa with his Anatolian sipahis. The Sultan himself was at the rear with his Kapıkulu cavalry. Stefan was also waiting, positioned in the forest on the left side, with the forces of the vassals. Since the geography was not suitable for wide-maneuvered cavalry warfare, the Ottoman plan was to remain on the defensive. The Hungarian king Sigismund knew how the Turks fought, so he wanted to lead the war, but the crusaders, who were enthusiastic and excited, refused, they wanted to fight immediately, they were very confident in their invincible heavily armored knights, the Ottoman's lightly armored and unarmored infantry soldiers could not resist them, they thought they would trample them. For this reason, they rejected Sigismund's offer to wait a little longer and launch an attack from the flanks and started attacking from the center with heavy cavalry. At full speed, they mounted the Akinci forces, which were light cavalry forces, like an iron fist. Raiders were light cavalry units used in attrition operations during the conquests, and they had no chance against heavily armored knights. Anyway, the Ottoman plan was not to make them fight. In the face of this attack, the raiders opened up to the right and left with a quick maneuver. Thus, the knights, whose front was empty, quickly launched an attack towards the center. When they came in front of the infantry, they saw the stakes and were surprised, but they were late. The knights trapped between the stakes were showered with archers. Here they had to dismount and fight on foot, but they did not stop. They made a strong attack on the infantry and archers behind. The Ottoman forces retreated after clashing with them. Seeing that the knights could not be superior, the Sultan sent the cavalrymen into battle and the cavalrymen began to hit the knights from the sides. While the tough battle continued, the Hungarians attacked. The Sultan, who did not want the Hungarians and the knights to unite, withdrew the sipahis and placed them in front of the Hungarians, uniting them with the raiders. The knights under the command of the Count of Never continued to fight, and the Sultan then attacked their right and left flanks with his Kapıkulu cavalry. With this fierce attack, the Earl of Never was captured and the knights were completely destroyed. All the nobles were taken prisoner. Meanwhile, Sigismund launched a general attack to save the allies. They attacked the newly established front line of the Ottoman Empire with all their troops. The attack was very violent. The Hungarians were fighting very well. Meanwhile, the forces of Mircea of Wallachia and Prince Stefan of Transylvania were suffering a lot of casualties. Thinking that the knights were also defeated, they thought they would be defeated and took their troops and fled the battle. But the Hungarians continued to fight persistently. Because they were very good warriors, there was a heavy battle in that region and the Ottoman forces began to deteriorate. At this moment, the Sultan ordered the attack on Stephan, the commander of his Serbian vassals. The vassal army attacked from the Hungarian right. With this attack, the Hungarian and other European forces, who were already fighting with their last strength, began to disperse. Seeing that the battle was lost, Sigismund took his loyal forces and headed towards the ships anchored in the harbour. However, Ottoman troops arrived here and Sigismund escaped by only managing to board the ship with a few of his soldiers. The entire remaining crusader army was destroyed. The nobles were taken prisoner. According to Ottoman historians, the number of nobles taken captive was so high that almost every household in Europe had a child captured. The Ottomans demanded very heavy ransoms for these. It is said that due to these ransoms, a serious economic crisis broke out in Europe for a while. In response, Jan, the count of Never, swore that he would never fight the Ottomans again and begged for forgiveness. However, after the Ottoman sultan received his ransom, he returned Jan's oath to him and released him, saying that he could fight him again. Sigismund, who was proud of his army before the war and said to the whole army, "Whether the Ottoman Sultan comes or not, we will destroy all the Turks and go to Jerusalem," could not fight the Turks again. With this war, Europeans completely gave up their dreams of taking over the Balkans.

The crusader armies were not always disorganized etc. how on earth would a disorganized crusader army take the queen of cities, unconquerable in 1204 Constantinople. How were they able to take Jerusalem. How were they able to passify the pagans of northern Europe esp Lithuanians. King of hungry played a major role in the events of this particular crusade.

The Matrice number is even vastly lowered from the official numbers the western sources indicate.
