    How good is your English? OK -- try listening to this clip and see if you can understand everything! A hilarious sketch which is also brilliant for helping your students develop their ability to cope with ambiguity (and try to guess the words they cannot immediately understand!) [NB: Slightly 'spicy']
    This clip is one of the most popular with my students and I have been using it for years. It was also the very first I uploaded in the 'Comedy for ELT' series -- but I only had the audio track. You can imagine how I felt when somebody who had listened to it sent me the link to the original TV episode... :-)
    Level: C1 -- C2. Topic: Relationships / Language. Taken from the BBC TV Series 'The Two Ronnies'.
    As usual, the handout [+ the KEY] is to be found here [NB: To download documents from the site, you need to use Firefox or Internet Explorer]

    Can you imagine trying to learn these lines? Brilliant stuff. Barker loved playing with words.

      This is true for the vast majority of teachers. I have been lucky so far - almost all my students have been between B2 and C2 levels. I can only use this clip with the very best of my C2 students. That said, I have found that if people like something v much (e.g. 'The Two Ronnies') they will persevere and they will manage to understand most of it eventually - esp if they have the script).

    Excuse me Mr Nick. What is the point of this clip? Surely you are not recommending it for students who study the English language?

    • @tipsforlearners3581
      @tipsforlearners3581 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, I would recommend it actually... 😄 Naturally, it all depends on your teaching context. I wouldn't use this one with teenagers in a state school for instance. However, if one happens to be teaching advanced level adults, then I am sure they would appreciate both the word play and the challenge of trying to understand why a particular bit is funny... More importantly, exposure to comedy might encourage students to start watching such clips themselves at home, in which case the teacher can just sit back and watch his/her students' English improve by leaps and bounds... 😁

    I once announced as the best student for English in my school when I'm in Form 3, and I still have to do a double take on this video and ask myself "Are they using English?"

      the script writer writes a script and changes letters in places to create a bit of a daft/nonsensical result. It works because everybody in Britain already liked the Two Ronnies by then. Two anonymous comedy actors couldn`t have gotten away with this. The Two Ronnies could
