      @@JeanneKinland Several years back, I experienced a delay in getting my onions seeds. That year, I think I didn't get them started until Jan 10th or so. They still worked out. The Proptek trays are really nice and very durable. I expect them to last a good 20 years. 😃 The only downside is that I don't have an actual humidity dome for them, so I use a large clear plastic tote instead. I hope you get your seeds soon.

    Hi Steve,
    You've enticed me into trying to grow onions again. I haven't had much success in the past. I'll have to make sure I'm planting short day, here in Central Florida.
    Happy New Year ❤

      Thanks for watching Peggy. For your location, ideally you would have planted them already and grow them through the winter with a harvest in March or April. Happy New Year to you.

    I like the cell tray. More room for you to start different types of onions. You are getting ready for spring growth.

      I like using the cell trays because it's less disturbance for the plants at transplanting time. Onions are the start of the growing season for me.

    Made up some fresh potting mix for onions and leeks a couple weeks ago, hopefully get them going this weekend. I used to start my onions in a deep aluminum tray, since watching your method have gone to individual cells, makes for more robust transplants and larger bulbs.
    Doing walla walla, yellow of parma and red florence again this year. Yellow of parma is really storing well.
    Your hydroponic lettuce looks terrific in the background, need to get mine going.
    Happy New Year Steve! Stay Well!!!!

      I haven't heard of Yellow of Parma, so I had to look it up. Supposed to be a good storage variety and it's open pollenated. Nice find there Brian. I might need to look into trying that out in a future year. I set up the hydroponic lettuce a little before the weather started turning cold. Happy New Year to you and hope you had a good holiday season. Thanks for watching.

    Nice graphic of the short to long day. I’m in the intermediate day zone. Good tip about bringing the soil inside to warm the soil up. Germination looks good for the candy. I wonder if the Spanish onion needs more warmth 🤔

      The Patterson and Spanish onions all germinated now, they just took a few extra days. I ended up putting a heat mat under the tray to increase the warmth. In your location, you can grow both long day and intermediate day giving you a wide selection of varieties. Thanks for watching Rick.

      @ Happy New Year! I think when I start mine I will sprinkle them in a container and tease the roots. Where do you normally order your onion seeds from?

      @stevefromthegarden1135  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      @@GardeningwithBarchuckin The Candy and Paterson I got from Johnnyseeds and the Spanish I got from MiGardener. I didn't find a place that carried all 3 varieties I wanted to grow. After I had started the seeds I found that Jung Seed had all 3 but their shipping costs are pretty high. The cost difference for their shipping vs someone else is enough to get a packet of something else. 😃

    Hey Steve, good to see you again. I started my onions on the 17th. Well all but 1 because it arrived late. I planted my usual Walla Walla's, and this year Im trying Long Red of Tropea, and the late to get here, Ailsa Craig. Im also trying Carantan Leeks this year as well. Im trying a lot of new things this year. I love to grow things that people around here dont seem to plant. Gets them talking about my garden. Im terrible.

      @@stevefromthegarden1135 I'm in northern Minnesota and have been growing Alisa Craigs for 3 seasons now. Seeds from MI Gardener. Because of limited space under the lights and so many other plants to start, my onions don't get started until March 1st. Plant out is late May. Fertilize and "Spoon" while growing. By early/mid September, some are just under softball size. Very high moisture onion. Poor keepers, but deliciously mild. Maybe 3 months at the most. Depends on moisture content each year.

    • @stevefromthegarden1135
      @stevefromthegarden1135  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      The onions kick off my growing season each year. I don't use any particular color of light on the onion plants. It's just whatever I have setup in the area I put them. That being said, I have both blurple and 4K grow lights available and I generally some of each type for each shelf of plants. When I move the plants upstairs in mid to late Feb, they also will get some sunlight that comes through the large south facing patio door. That patio door also makes it convenient to move them outside on warm days. Thanks for watching Sandra and Happy New Year to you.

    Thanks for the very informative video. I tried onions last year (Zone 5a NH) without much success so I have a lot to learn. I didn't realize they could be started so early so I think I'll start them today. Will they stay in the trays until it's time to plant or will they need to be repotted? My last frost date is May 18th.

    • @stevefromthegarden1135
      @stevefromthegarden1135  9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hello Maureen. My last frost date is similar to yours. Onion plants can be a bit slow to get going initially, so I like to start them around the Christmas/New Year time period. I will transplant them out in the garden in late March once the night time temperatures are generally staying near or above 30 to 32 F. (That time period might be a little different for your area) I don't up pot any of the onions when I use the cell trays. They go directly from the cell tray to the garden. Thanks for watching.

    Just cover them in plastic and put them upstairs and they sprout in about 5 to 7 days and have your growing medium already fertilize with a very diluted organic fertilizer , them when ever you water use a very lite fertilizer mix in your water

    • @stevefromthegarden1135
      @stevefromthegarden1135  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I found having fertilizer in the seed starting mix caused interference with germination. So I now wait until all the seeds have germinated, then I apply some organic fertilizer. Thanks for watching Kenny.

    Fish emulsion is no longer a smart choice. It was when it was made from useless fish entrails scales bones and slime. Then it was very inexpensive and ecological. Now, that it became popular for those reasons it is no longer economical nor ecological. It is now made of whole edible fish caught just for the product and is very profitable as it sells for more than the fillets. It is terrible we are now using food in place of waste just for fertilizer. It is ecologically and economically outrageously overpriced. I used to use it in the 1970s and 80s because it was an ecological use of scraps not even usable as pet food but now fishing fleets go out to harvest fish for this expensive product. There are much stronger economical fertilizers today.

    • @stevefromthegarden1135
      @stevefromthegarden1135  11 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      I haven't bought any in maybe 4 years, as I have less stinky alternatives. I don't know what it costs anymore. I will look up the local price before the next video on fertilizing. It is rather wasteful if they are harvesting fish only to turn into fertilizer instead of only using the waste parts. Not a good of use limited resources. Thanks for watching and commenting.
