  • Seventy people died last month in Johannesburg, when a fire gutted a 'hijacked' building, drawing attention to the lack of affordable housing. Many of South Africa's poor live in similar rundown properties, which are controlled by armed gangs.

apparently they're not functioning as an even remotely cohesive community, it's everyone for themselves (probably in part due to the mixed nationalities, probably in part due to high levels of drug addiction and petty crime). in principle, the gang collecting the rent ought to be the ones organising, since they are in charge, but clearly they care about nothing as long as they're paid. the kowloon walled city and venezuela's tower of david definitely did not look like that, they could never have functioned on anywhere near their scales.

The word savage has multiple definitions. See the following excerpt from a renowned dictionary below.
I did not use the word how it is most commonly used, but in a correct manner befitting of the context nonetheless. See definition #3:
      savage | ˈsavɪdʒ |
      adjective
1 (of an animal or force of nature) fierce, violent, and uncontrolled: packs of savage dogs roamed the streets.
      • cruel and vicious; aggressively hostile: a savage attack on the government.
2 (of something bad or negative) very great; severe: the decision was a savage blow for the town.
3 dated or offensive (of a person or group) primitive and uncivilized.
      • (of a place) wild-looking and inhospitable; uncultivated.

Housing should be a basic human right and people should never have to resort to living in such conditions. It's deplorable that in the 21st century we still haven't solved this issue.

@@First-Last_name The human right exists ,so congratulations, goodluck getting UN to enforce it .
In my opinion government land should be utilised to build low cost housing.
As everyone paying taxes would atleast like them to work, however since apartheid fell the government has only been expropriating buildings such as this one from private owners.
Why do I say it's the government's way of expropriation, because the government didn't fight against the highjackers, or re-home the squatters in the first place.
The owner's of these buildings contacted the police , but the police did nothing, as a result the government solved it's housing crises at the cost of turning their heads to theft and in some cases human rights abuse.
I have one friend who's sister was trafficked to one of these buildings and kept as a slave , luckily someone hired a PI and they got her back, she was heavily drugged though.

This is literally the opposite 😂
The country is falling apart because it's trying to redistribute wealth instead of creating it.
Controlling for inflation the GDP per capita has decreased since 1994 and the overall GDP changed from 390bil in 1985, to 420bil we have almost twice the people now with a slight increase in GDP .
2012 We lost 250k jobs in the Western Cape to imported textiles from China alone.
The country also won't stop printing money so it makes it harder for people to save and to take the risk on starting a business.
It's great for the state though, with inflation they can indirectly tax everybody.
