The world record was set a year earlier by Jonathan Edwards at the 1995 Gothenburg World Championships. He broke the World record twice that day. Going into Atlanta 1996 Olympics only Kenny Harrison had a chance of beating a prime Edwards & boy did he produce much to our chagrin. ☺ I can look back at as the best triple jump competition ever much like the long jump of Barcelona 1992 Olympics
Yes agree. But Olympic Games in 1968 is the only one event where world record was improved 4 times in The final! And twice by Soviet athlete Saneev who died in 2022 unfortunatelly.
***** 100% correct. It was a massive deal. Pissed all over London & Atlanta. Rio is going to be unreal though. Brazil take big sporting events so seriously!
It's more just luck Jonathan Edwards and Kenny harrison have 2 of the 3 best times ever with Kenny having a 18.1, edwards has the Wr at 18.29 set in 95. And christian taylor gold medalist in 2012/16 with 17.81/17.86 has a best of 18.21. Edwards went on to win gold in 2000 but basically it just so happens 2 of the best jumpers ever were in their prime in the mid 90s for atlanta
Amazingly Edwards nearly broke his world record of 18.29 in the final jump but it was a foul by nearly 0.02m... Just watch the highlights of that final and you'll see his reaction after that jump was called foul..though he took gold 4 years later at Sydney 2000...but Atlanta 1996 was really amazing...And for people who dont know Edwards also jumped 18.41(the biggest jump in the history of triple jump, but it is not considered a world record because it was wind assisted... If wind is more than 2.0, it cannot be considered a world record though it would be counted for that games but not more....That day when Edwards jumped that jump, wind was 2.4....Sad,isn't it.. )
Reminiscence of that time. I still remember Muhammad Ali burning the Olympic torch in the opening ceremony and my uncle was in tears watching him shiver (Parkinson's)
Jonathan Edwards had a great jump rightly ruled out as a foul, but by millimetres off the board. It would have been 18.30 something and beaten the world record had it been legal. Kenny Harrison won fair and square. He was on fire that day!
Agreed. For the USians out there the WR (held by Jonathon Edwards from Great Britain and set in 1995) of 18.29m is just a shade over 60 feet... or 102.7 bananas
I’ve attempted a few Triple Jumps back when I lived in Kamloops when the public was still allowed to use the long/triple jump pit at the Tournament Capital Centre...I only went about 9 meters but it’s still a good effort. Now I live in Campbell River and besides, the long/triple jump pit is now only being used by people who are taking lessons in the sport
Olympic record can only be achieved in an Olympics event. On the other hand World Record can be achieved in World Championship, Olympics and others. E.g. Jonathan Edwards achieved a World Record of 18.29 meters leap, in Göteborg World Championships, in 1995, but it is not considered an Olympic record because it is not held in an Olympic Event. Sometimes an WR = OR, if a world record is achieved in an Olympic games. Sometimes WR > OR, like the example above. But there are no such thing as OR > WR.

Can someone please explain at the beginning of the video right at the 9-10 second mark how that's possible? Is that fake? It looks like the guy sort of is walking on air and takes like a second step or something midair. Is that video altered? How does he do that? Please explain because that's incredible!!
But Olympic Games in 1968 is the only one event where world record was improved 4 times in The final! And twice by Soviet athlete Saneev who died in 2022 unfortunatelly. Respect him please everyone from any country!
Imagine having the realization after doing something that you were the best in the world at it. That must be a great feeling
Grunting what if we have the best fap skill in the world and not realize it because we're too shy?
Grunting
. ..
Im blessed to know how that feels.
These are olympic records, not world records
TimmaBilla Jonathan Edwards holds record tho. So he is best in the world
Imagine getting one of the top scores ever in the world only to get topped twice by the same person within the same competition.
He won Gold 4 years later and to this day still holds the world record so I think he's probably over it
Imagine beating someone's top score minutes later then again in the same game just to have people talk about the loser and how he feels.
@@Justme-jh6uubecause the loser is the 20+ year world record holder.

atlanta 1996 was truly the most epic olympic games.
According to Americans.

steroids.
Records
WR = 18.29 m
OR = 18.09 m
WR - Nélson Évora (Portugal)
Jonathan Edwards (uk)
Raul Pedro no it’s Johnathon Edwards
Jonathan edwards two records in 20mins broke his own records.
For me the Olympic records matter who knows who is doping
the amount of people who don't know the difference between a olympic record and world record is too damm high
looks-like-kristoff usually OR is lower than WR
If the OR is the same as the WR, then the OR is not lower than the WR.
Explain america explain
if OR be higher for everything record that could be WR... never OR > WR...

Wow these were all at the same olympics
yeah, the first thing that comes to mind is that it's probably something about americans' failure to use the metric system accurately.

Superb !!
Now we have Pedro Pichardo (POR) with the 3rd longest olympic triple jump (17,98m).

I think his 5th it was 18.21 adjusted to minus his foul distance, his 6th 18.13
It might have been 18.23 not 18.21, ut I lost my data a few years ago
Reminiscence of that time. I still remember Muhammad Ali burning the Olympic torch in the opening ceremony and my uncle was in tears watching him shiver (Parkinson's)
this discipline is one of the most amazing disciplines to try im trying it

Kenny Harrison won fair and square. He was on fire that day!
He had two jumps beyond KH but as Edwards mentions, KH would have probably jumped hard again to beat him that night
I don’t think any one realises how long 18 meters is unless they can see it
Agreed. For the USians out there the WR (held by Jonathon Edwards from Great Britain and set in 1995) of 18.29m is just a shade over 60 feet... or 102.7 bananas
nice video!
When i try triple jump i look like a dying chicken
What's up with Kenny Harrison's left shoulder?
His brother
LOOOOOL ^

I want to know too. :(
Thanks for all your comments guys, isn't it amazing to think these all took place at the same Games! What Top 3 would you like to see in the series?
Great athletes.
Nothing specific. We need MORE videos like this idea. You should make them as a playlist. That would be amazing.
Thank you.
but Jonathan Edwards holds the wr at 18.95?
18.29
***** Pure competition which it is the way it's supposed to be!
+Joel Wynter is was in the 1995 world championships he set the record
My favorite olympics 1996
Nice AC Joint separation.
Harrison is a beast
Amazing that 27 years later with all of the advances in sports science and peak physical conditioning that no one has yet beat this record.

Amazing!!
Edwards jumped an 18.20 at the 1996 Olympics but it got wiped off by a really close foul
Ok so it doesn't count

Triple jump is a hop, skip then and jump to two feet. So He's just cycling his leg on the hop. Basically all triple jumpers do it.
Mike Conley 1992 18,17m windaided
please what is the name of the song @Olympic
No words
Can someone please tell which music it is? Or is it created by Olympic channel itself?
Mike Conley jumped 18.17m (wind assisted - just at 2.1m/s) in Barcelona in 1992
that is not olympics
Doesn't count, as it was wind assisted, all these three jumps were record legal
Wind assistance over 2.0 doesn't count
what's up with home dudes shoulder?
"home dude" hahahahahaha
??
They're wings
Check out Edwards 18:43 triple jump which had a marginal wind violation
What's the background music called..... 1:00

Well done to kenny
why is the world record with Jonathan Edwards
Basketball players would be great at this
