The thing about speaking American is that, as a simplified version of English, many people don't have a vocabulary that allows them to express themselves concisely and there are pitfalls everywhere which result in them being misunderstood in many other English-speaking countries. The main two adjectives the USA employs to describe someones intelligence are just "dumb" or "smart". All those beautiful words like "canny", "clever" "sharp" "astute" "adept" "brilliant" "knowledgable" "well-read" "well-educated" "witty" "quick-witted" "perceptive" "shrewd" "percspicacious"" "".....are just the ones that come to mind - doubtless any Thesaurus has heaps more. But these are all ways to describe a "smart" person...there are so many different kinds of intelligence and we have words that fit them all.
As for "dumb" - a word I've never heard used to describe a person except for people from the US - but there's "thick", "slow-witted" "uneducated" "slow" "dim" "obvious" "uninformed" "dense" "inane" "foolish" "ridiculous " "mindless" "silly" "daft"....because there are also many different kinds of "dumbness" which have no correlation with a person's IQ.
As you'll see from the comments, "smart" to most English speakers means "chic" "sophisticated" "elegant" "fashionable" "well-groomed" "trim" "neat" "spruced up" "dapper" "edgy". So, if people from the US are described as "Smart" no-one's referring to their brain-power but to their dress sense!

      I have to concur.
The word dumb doesn't even mean stupid, it means someone who lacks the ability to talk.
Deaf and dumb was a common phrase back in my youth because most people who are deaf can't hear their own voice and are therefore also dumb.
It has nothing to do with being dim-witted.
I was married to an American for 15 years and I was astonished at how lazy their language is.
Ya'll instead of you all is a classic example.

A college could be a university or other four-year college to earn a Bachelor's degree or advanced degrees after earning a Bachelor's, or it could be a community college to take either academic classes or vocational classes to get certified for a certain job, which could be in any field.

Here in Europe where I live, children learn their mothertongue and English from grade 1. Starting grade 4 they start learning an additional 3rd language of their choice (they can chose out of 2 or 3 languages available in that particular school, and the class will be shuffled according to the kids language choices)
Yes, and we dress smartly. Smartly means decent. Something close to formal/classy but not too formal, with a timge of casual or artistic. Sports wear and a messy bun is for lazy people who have given up and don't care anymore (it doesn't even fall under casual). Jeans are a staple for both genders as every day casual wear, usually couple with a stylish blowse for women. T shirts and tank tops for women is more on the level as sports wear. Dresses during summer are very popular. T shirts for men are great for garden barbeque or camping or a game nigh, and ok for every day wear for a teenager or younger... But for a day in the city, a nice button up shirt with a jacket definetly is a plus.

ok hear me out, the point he made about dutch trams and subways is actually astoundingly true lol. I'm from Italy and I've been to the netherlands a bunch of times, and although in Milan on the subway there may be definetely a good bunch of beautiful girls, mostly university students i guess, there are also tons of women that look all stressed out due to work and some clearly have difficult economic situations, mainly immigrants , added up to the stress of the city and all they don't quite have the luxury to care about their aesthetics.
But in the Netherlands it's crazy. Everywhere you go you're surrounded by angels (ok, I may be biased towards blue haired blondies, but there're also MANY black people in the netherlands, and the girls/women can be just as good looking), but not just younger girls. I saw some of the most beautiful moms I've ever seen on dutch trains. And by comparing it directly to Italy they definetely care less about heavy make up and fancy clothes in the netherlands, yet they aòways look stunning just naturally for the most part.
This will probably sound weird at some points but hey, that's like the entire video lol. It's pretty hard to avoid evry possible controversy when talking about this stuff honestly

yup. i'm from the netherlands and can say its true. although to my eyes that's just normal. so when i go elsewhere i'm barely looking at the women there unless they really stand out.
Over here we have women traveling on trams and trains. in the USA they're transporting whales and pigs :D
In europe we're reserved about our feelings? dude we're more clear and direct. especially in the netherlands. "hey this date went well. i like you. lets go to the next stage" and then the other responds clearly so you know straight up what's what.

7:44, no, that's not unusual in Budapest. The fact of the matter is that there are much more similarities than differences when it comes to nontraditional styles and whatnot and there certainly are a ton of uniquely styled people here in Budapest as I'd imagine it being the case in the US or UK.. The government is conservative but the people are not.. funnily enough, especially the young adults.

Gosh, do women still do that? It would absolutely p*ss me off, if I was a guy.
I always hated such games. If I‘m interested in a man, I let him know. If I want to flirt with him, I have no problem to start it.

Somebody please check if this guy is still alive! If he's dead, it was definitely not natural causes, nor suicide, but murder. The suspect pool contains roughly 50% of the population.
The etymology of 'smart' goes back to a word that meant 'stinging' or 'pain'. This has then taken on several other meanings, such as 'sharp', which has then come to mean 'mentally sharp', but also things like 'neat', 'orderly', 'precise', 'well formed', 'pretty'. These can, obviously, be used to refer to fashion choices.

As a European at school, I learned that "look smert" means "look elegant", so maybe that was the point.🙃
As for the education of languages in a Polish school, we must know our native language, English, which is required for, for example, the eighth-grade exam or the high school leaving exam, and from maybe the 6th grade we must learn French, Russian or German (depends on the school). I'm talking about primary school, in post-primary school we still have our native language and English and we choose an additional language that the school can offer us (we have, for example, 2 choices depending on the type of school/profession we study). At least that was my case.
To be honest, I used a translator to write this😉

Um no. To dress "smart" is to dress neat and professional with matched styles and colours. He is not calling someone who does not dress "smart" a dumb person. The opposite of "smart" would be casual or ad hoc (ie random). I didn't even realise that Americans don't have that adjective. For a man, "smart" would be a long sleeve shirt with collar and neatly pressed pants. For a woman it might be a blouse with a lapel blazer and matching skirt or slacks. No T-shirts, no jeans, no shorts.

Learning English starts already in primary school, as a compulsory foreign language. Then it also depends on where you live - if you live in a bilingual area (where two languages between two countries merge) then they also learn this language in school.
With continuing education comes electives and languages. In hospitality and tourism schools, knowledge of two to three languages is mandatory. Many people also attend language courses (for a hobby or because they would like to know more languages, they travel a lot...). Unlike Americans, Europeans are multilingual.

In a small village you won't find many women running around in high heels. And at least in Germany even in the city many women wear sneakers.
He also forgot the different generations. The old women often didn't travel at all, not even in the country, had almost no education, only speak one language, never had a job, raised their children and so on.
But younger generations have to learn two languages. You will be taught a second language if you go to school. And we need English not only for travelling. Online tutorials are often only in English. Manuals are often very poorly translated, so it's easier to use the English version. It's normal to travel to other countries and usually you need two salaries to afford a family.
And we also have the different kinds of girls. There are punks and fat girls and so on.
