A vital part of our onlinne course program is our regular Zoom sessions.
These are available to all students enrolled in a term, but sometimes we get one that’s so interesting we have to share it more widely.
This term we invited OCHS Director/Founder, Shaunaka Rishi Das, to share his thoughts on the importance of Hindu Studies and to shed a some light on the role of the Oxford Centre for Hindu Studies in making it all happen.
Enrolled students also got to participate in a Q&A session at the end but for privacy reasons we edited this out. However, it stands alone as an excellent exploration of a big and important question.

I thought Shaunaka Rishi does wanted to start the Hindu Studies because he was a Gaudiya Vaishnava and wanted to spread the ideology and proselytise particularly according to ISKCON, but it seems that there is more open mindedness as he mentioned that he believes academia provides a space to define Hinduism beyond Hindu Nationalism and Marxis Leninism. I appreciate that.
I’ve just wondered, what if there is a critical study of ISKCON, detailing abuses. Wouldn’t that be a conflict of interest? For example a study of Henry Doktorski’s book, or New Vrindaban in the 1980’s during the reign of Kirtanananda Swami.

    You are right
There is no hindu study center/departments in India
    It's very unfortunate and tragic

Was shocked to hear the Oxford professor's report (Shaunaka Rishi Das' report)--with your confirmation--on the woeful state of academic Hindu studies in India. I'm an African-American Shaiva, adopted Hindu faith 35 years ago. Favorite philosopher Utpaladeva. Have many times shed tears of gratitude for the inspiration and intellectual penetration of teachings received over the years. It's such a priceless treasure of insight and divine intuition. No doubt countless persons in India are studying independently, just as I a foreigner have done. But this is a world legacy that deserves continuing academic attention.

Only Univ of Hawai and Univ of Oxford have Indian philosophy departments ?
    What a shame.
This after having universities 300 years old, 1000s of Univs all over Europe, USA, spending 100s of Billions of dollars on Greek studies?,
    What a shame .
    Shows evil mindset of westerners.

Why is Hinduism good? We have caste problems. We are poor and broken.

And yet we dont go around blowing people up. And FYI caste exists even in British society. You got the posh and the chavs and everyone in between. In Islam you got the Syeds at the top of the pile. Among non religionists or atheists too im sure there are hierarchies of some sort. See its human nature. You put 10 people on an island and theyll form 10 groups. What i am saying is...caste is a social construct and has no basis in Hinduism...sure some obscure ancient texts somewhere by someone might describe the cast hierarchy as god ordained or something but that is no reason to diss the loftiest ideas ever propounded by any religious tradition. Pick up a copy of the upanishads and try deciphering the multi layered meaning of each verse and you will marvel at its depth.

You need to study deeply. What you are questioning is the outcome of intellectual colonization and intentionally distorted history & culture.

I have been studying Hindusim for last 20 years it is fascinating! I would like to ask if you have read Bhagavad Gita, once you read that and understand more about your self you will love it too.
You will learn about the soul, body, paramatma, understand how Time works, how the material world works, how the universe is created. You will learn how the whole world followed Vedic Culture before....it's fascinating, I would recommend you to pick up a book and start your journey.
