I went to their page to make sure because I had heard mixed opinions(no one gave clear facts in an hour long debate). While they do not list any known metal bottles, nalgene bottles ARE on there. Best bet would be to contact Source directly and ask point blank if they fit/work on the Pathfinder bottles.
I've been looking at both, wondering which one. Your evaluation and presentation gave me the information I need to make a decision. What I am looking for, is a survival kit for my float plane. A single package that I can pack with the 10 C's, some coffee, sugar, freeze dried food, dry soup pouches and Cliff bars, and a small Sawyer water filter, just in case I have to put down on a lake because of mechanical or weather issues, which has happened in the past. (weather) It seems like the canteen version is the best fit. I would remove the green canteen liner as redundant, to use the extra space. Then fill the canteen with the emergency food supplies so that it's safe from bugs or rodents getting at it as it will sit in the back of the airplane all summer. Thanks for the review, and Cheers from Winnipeg.
I'm glad I could help. My friend has a plane and he did the same thing. He likes the wide mouth of the canteen because he can fit bigger stuff inside the bottle. Hopefully you enjoy it as much as he does.
I use the canteen and it's very good. The green case is useful because you can put it on your belt for easy access and it holds the cup and canteen together.
The rings on the back allow for it to be attached via clips to your belt as well if your familiar with the mostly associated Vietnam Era, "H" or "Y" Harness for your direct level 2 gear. Level 3 - Pack Contents, Level - 2 LBV/LBE Gear, Level - 1 Gear in trousers, pockets, attached to uniform belt.
I have been using the canteen kit for years. And that style cup most of my life. I never figured out that form in the handle trick. Excellent! Thank you.
Thank you for the great video and comparison! The D rings on the back of the canteen pouch are to make it easier to Mount on belts of different width sizes. Also, you can adjust how high or low you want the pouch to sit!
You did a very thorough job of comparing the pros and cons of the two systems. I learned a bit from your explanations, despite having owned a canteen, and used one, for over 50 years. Thanks very much for sharing. I subbed.
I'm really glad I could share something new with you. I'm sure I could learn a lot from you as well. Thank you so much for watching and all of the support it really means a lot to me.
Slip the straps inside the D rings, snap them in. Then use the D rings to attach the pouch to something. (In the event the straps don't fit the situation.) It's actually very smart. Great review bud. Very thorough and well done. Thanks for the video.
@@newageselfreliance Yup. Different design. I'd ask the company directly. They would probably be very willing to give you the full explanation on why D rings. Happy New Year!
Nice kits & great review, I too like Pathfinder products. The D rings on the back of the large canteen cook set pouch also allow you to run the straps through them & then mount on your belt/pistol belt. It serves well to strap it to your belt & then use in conjunction with the shoulder strap as well then it comes into its own & works great - Marco
I bought the Canteen Kit specifically for the canteen pouch. If you arrange the molly straps on the back of the canteen pouch correctly, they form two strong belt loops, and I like keeping my canteen on my belt. I keep an emergency space blanket, and the Pathfinder fire starters with it, and a few yards of bankline. My Mora Light My Fire lives right next to it on my belt. So for that extra $5 I have a basic survival kit on my belt, and a food pouch. On long day hikes I usually tie an Eno hammock or a tarp to the bottom of the pouch.
It is a really great heavy duty pouch. Caroline likes to store her whole cook system in it. It holds everything with a lot of room to spare. Thank you so much for watching I really appreciate the support.
I love your attention to detail. You bring up points in your comparison that other people overlook like using the fork as a handle extension for the canteen cup, the lip in the canteen that can cause bacteria build up if not properly cleaned, among other points. I appreciate your analysis. You have gained a new subscriber.
Either system is great, but I love the canteen. Much easier to grasp and hold when opening & closing than the round bottle. I also prefer the canteen's pouch as you can fit a complete PSK (personal survival kit) in it including a 5X7' tarp, an emergency poncho and a micro bivy for a very rudimentary shelter system, not to mention a micro fishing kit, fire kit, FAK, food packets, compass, bail wire, etc... Great thorough review and comparison. 👍🏻
Yeah, the canteen pouch can hold way more than the water bottle can. The straight sides make the pockets a better shape for fitting different things as well.
Thanks for a great review! You covered everything I wanted to know. I will get the bottle instead of the canteen. My decision came down to the lip folding outside for the bottle. I feel that it makes the bottle easier to maintain and more sanitary.
The rolled lip on the canteen is so you can still use the fish mouth spreaders as a bail handle. That said I always use the bottle. It feels more natural drinking from a bottle than a bean-shaped canteen.
These are great, but its worth noting that you can achieve similar results army surplus kit for a fraction of the price. I bought some random system which was a 750ml plastic canteen, a stainless steel cup that it nests in, and a canteen pouch which carries it all, and it came in at about twenty bucks. The metal canteen cup is basically a smaller version of the pathfinder metal cup, but less flash, but its absolutely bomb proof. Not throwing shade on this gear, its absolutely Gucci, but personally I cant afford it... not when I can spend twenty bucks and save money for a better tent. Thanks for the video
I don't have an Army surplus store in my area. The best I got is one Goodwill. I wish there were more places around here where I could find deals on gear. Until then I'm stuck paying full price and sometimes top dollar for high-end gear.
@@newageselfreliance Fair play mate, and thank you for taking the time to reply. Absolutely not disparaging the gear, I actually looked into getting one. Sadly wasnt budget friendly enough for me. Definitely check out a few online army surplus stores though. They are great for ideas if nothing else. All the best to you mate.
Such an honest straightforward review. Just helping folks understand so they can make their own choice. Both are great options. I have had the Pathfinder canteen kit for a while and it has been excellent. I ordered a Firebox Nano from Selfreliance outfitters a couple days ago with their special and it happens to come with the SS cup you have in this video. I have a Nalgean bottle for a separate kit that goes with a GSI cup. Will see if the Pathfinder cup is preferred over the GSI cup. If so It will replace it since I understand it will also nest with a Nalgean.
Yep, it will nest really well with your Nalgene bottle. The only complaint I have with the cup is the handles. I like the type of handles the GSI has better than the "bat wings" on the Pathfinder. I have a BattlBox cup that is a ripoff from the Pathfinder cups but it has the GSI style handles. I like how much longer they are and how the rest higher up on the cup so they don't get as hot when pulling them off the fire.
@@newageselfreliance Agree that the GSI has nice handles that stay put. My GSI cup is the 20 oz. I noticed that they are now making a slightly larger 24oz of the same cup. My 20oz is not quite big enough to comfortably do Ramen noodle. 24oz would be just right for Ramen. I may get that one and use the Pathfinder lid with it. Perhaps drill a couple holes for the fish spreader bail.
Excellent review. Appears you received some good responses concerning the d-rings on the back of the canteen pouch, good way to engage your audience. The tight lid fit on the bottle cup is probably designed to prevent spillage if the cup tips over in the fire or is accidentally knocked over. Not as much of an issue with the handle design on the canteen cup. I have a US Army canteen that belonged to my Mom (an Army Nurse in WWII) and have never had an issue with seams leaking, although today it mostly sits on a shelf but was my main canteen for about 20 years plus during her service. Good tip on the lip of the canteen and possible bacteria collection. Overall a good fair comparison of these container systems. Thank you for sharing.
Wolf Pack Woodcraft Yes, and now I am old enough / smart enough to understand what my Mom meant when I asked to use the canteen. “Water only tastes good out of an old aluminum canteen when you are in the Philippine jungle.” Trust me, there is a good reason it now sits on a shelf. 😀
Nice comparison of those two products, although we agree that they are pretty similar if not exactly the same except some little difference. You basically clarified some issues I was wondering about and with that being said you have help me make up my mind. I am going for the Pathfinder Stainless Steel water bottle kits. Thank You Wolf Pack well done mate.
Great review! A few mods I’ve learned ... drill your own holes in the canteen cover to give you the correct straining configuration. Use a bandana around the water bottle stove to help pull it out of the pouch. Thanks again for the great review.
The bandana trick works really well. I discovered it by accident I threw my bandana into the pouch when it was empty and it just so happened to land in a way to easily get the cup out. It works really well.
I appreciate your video detailing the two different set-ups! I've been assembling a pack to run double duty for my get-home bag and outdoors and I had been trying to figure out what I wanted to use for a water carrier. Thanks to this I went with the Pathfinder bottle kit. Hopefully it'll serve me well out in the field!
@@newageselfreliance Once the weather turns more reliable and warmer I'll be out fishing and hiking so I'll make sure to let you know how it turned out.
Your description of the "original" (for lack of a better term) military canteen and its radial, top-to-bottom seams overlooked something. What you described is the late-war aluminum canteens. They were less-than-successful because, in addition to developing the leaks you described, would easily dent/collapse. The original, stainless steel, US military canteens were seamed together horizontally, exactly the way the Pathfinder canteen is assembled. That's why I seek out, and use, them to this very day. After extensive cleaning/sanitizing, of course.
Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I have older military canteens but both the ones I own are plastic. When did they switch to stainless steel?
The poly liner in the canteen space is also a rain fly/dust protector as well as for keeping small things from falling out during stressful, physical activities like fighting bears and cougars... Enjoyed the comparison video and you did a great job.
That makes a lot of sense. I don't really use the liner myself but I know Caroline always uses it. She is always worried about things falling out or not attaching the clip correctly. For her, it's more of a redundant closer. Thank You so much for watching and sharing your knowledge I really appreciate it.
Best canteen or water bottle cleaner is Arm and Hammer baking soda. I keep baking soda in a spice container with the sprinkle holes on top. Sprinkle some baking powder into the container with about a cup of water. Put the lid on an shake vigorously. Pour it out and rinse thoroughly. It sanitizer and removes all odors. Never use soap or dish liquid to do this. There is a risk of soap residue that can cause illness. You did a great job on the comparison. It helped me make a decision.
@@newageselfreliance I have traveled extensively in foreign countries. I take a shaker bottle of Baking Soda and use it to wash clothes in the sink, brush my teeth and clean my water bottle. Clothes rinse clean and are deoderized. I've even used it on my long hair when I didn't have enough water to wash it. Just take a couple of teaspoons and work it through dry hair and brush vigorously. It works well to remove oiliness and odor. .
I'm gonna have to start stocking up on Baking Soda. I knew it worked really well for a lot of different things but I never really looked into what those things actually were.
Very thorough review of both systems. With the water bottle kit nest the stove right side up on the bottle it will save you from having to dig it out of the bottom.
I have done that before. I just use the water bottle way more than I use the stove. So having to get the stove off the bottom on a rare occasion is easier than taking the stove off every time I use the water bottle.
I owned 2 of the kidney shaped canteens you show. The first had the old bakelite cap and the rubber gasket gave the water a bad taste. They fixed this issue with the canteen later. I tried to boil water in it and the seam failed where the top and the bottom halves of the canteen come together. I bought the second one later and had the upgraded cap and gasket. I coated the inside with beeswax to prevent a leak at the seal but now I can't heat water in it. This is not an issue since I've been using the GI issue plastic canteen since 1976. Excellent video, well made and informative, I'm subscribing!
I always use my cup for cooking. I haven't found a reason to put the canteen itself into the fire. The weld is definitely its weak spot. You have a full canteen of water or the heat will affect that weld. I'm dad had a plastic canteen with the cup that rests on top.
I use the water bottle more than the canteen. I just like the shape of it better. If feels more like drinking out of a standard drinking glass like I use at home.
I have one of those as well. From the Vietnam war. I never use it because I don't want anything to happen to it but I know they are really nice pieces of kit.
I have both, still use both. I do not have the canteen bag just a U.S. GI pouch wish I did have the bag it was sold out when I bought mine. They both seem heavy when full of water but hold enough to last through a pretty long day hike. I prefer to cook in the canteen cup, but the water bottle looks less like an army wannabe when in polite society like a state park. Both great kits !
I really like both systems I just end up using the Water Bottle kit a lot more just because it's whgat I'm use to. Thank You so much for watching I really appreacdiaet the support.
Very thorough. Thank you. Bottle for the win, standard army system cannot be improved upon once you add the lid to the cup. And that’s mainly just for the faster boil times.

Thanks for the review, I’m looking at getting the bottle cook set without the bag. Can you tell me if the bottle cup lid fits inside the stove or is the diameter of the lid too big?
No, the nesting cup lid will not fit inside the woodstove. They are the exact same diameter. The lid may be slightly bigger but not by much. When I carry the set I put the lid to the nesting cup in one of the side pockets of my backpack with my stove and fuel. The only time you really need the lid is when you are cooking so I keep it with my cooking gear.
You did a good job reviewing these products. I would like to point out some information for you. David Canterbury points out in a couple of his videos the importance of why the water bottle is 32 oz. All the forms of water purification is based on 32 oz. so there is no chance the lay person would make a mistake out in the wilderness on how much water to chemical they had. Personally I would think that information is kind of important .
I think chemical treating water should be treated like wild mushrooms. If you're not 100% certain what you are doing, you shouldn't risk trying. One of the worst things that can happen when you are out in the wilderness is getting sick.
@@newageselfreliance Well even though the canteen kit is nice and has more pouch accessories I went with the water bottle kit for the non worry factor of having to extra clean the bottle itself "seamless on the inside" I purchased a Helikon Foxtrot MK2 for my bottle kit to make up for the less pouch accessories
@@newageselfreliance So far, I like it. have the smaller pouch strapped to my Go bag. But still have the larger pouch for whatever else I may need.....collecting tinder, extra storage....whatever. Only one pouch with the water bottle system.
I did a video on that Stanley cup system. If you pair the Cup system with the adventure kit you have one sold kit for two people. Probably one of the best. th-cam.com/video/PctB7SJtS0Y/w-d-xo.html

@@newageselfreliance canteen for some touch of nostalgia and for the long haul out there! Thank you very much for your clear, enlightening and honest presentation. I hope I can like your vid 100 times! 🇵🇭
Thanks for doing such a detailed comparison of the two bottle systems. I appreciated the extra info on the fold overs at the mouth of the containers and the inner seam on the canteen for being possible cleaning issue pain points. I know the bottles go through different incremental upgrades in design. Be curious to see if three years on this is the same issue.
I think the reason the canteen folds the way they do is so that you can use a fishmouth spreader as a bail. I'm not sure if they changed the design but there was a reason for it being the way it was. I'm really glad you enjoyed the video.
Right, I have no idea why I watched this video - however, it is a brilliant review on the differences/similarities. If I ever wanted this kind of set up, I now know which one I would get. 👍
Great review. Thank you for the details. I bought the Canteen Pouch separate and use it with my water bottle and it gives me a lot more room to add some other items.
I got the Canteen kit last year, and I love it. I was looking to buy the bottle kit as well this year, but they changed the bottle bag to black for some reason, so I'm hesitant to get one. Great video!
I don't know why companies are making everything black. Ursack only sells black bags and now the Pathfinder bags only come in black. I don't know why you would wanna put your food or water in a hot black bag?
Did you have the issue I had with the canteen cup? I put out the handle and let it snap into place, and the welding failed. The whole handle popped right off. I ended up having to buy a second cup from a different maker. I should note I have 2 of the canteen cups, and it didn't happen with the first, but happened with the second.
I have not had that issue. To be fair I don't use my canteen nearly as much as my water bottle. The canteen cup has four spot welds holding the handle on, whereas the bottle cup has 9 spot welds.
Great review. There was a lot of useful, practical information. I think I am leaning more towards the canteen kit. Also, you do realize that you can put straining holes in the lid, right? You just need the right drill bit.
I really appreciate your support. I'm glad I could help. I like to review products "as is" so people watching can see exactly what they are getting. That way they can decide if the product is worth upgrading or if they should find something better.
So the true solution here is to run them both. One on each side of the pack so you have best of both worlds. I have the canteen set already, but I think I will order the water bottle set for my son. Great video. Thanks for the info!
Outstanding review and video! Great attention to detail and explanation of pros and cons both systems. Just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work!
Ok, after having watched your review, done a little research and replying on a few other posts, I feel like I can give an informed opinion on these two systems. Having used canteens in the military, the extra carrier I'd use for something else and carry the canteen on my belt. You can carry the water bottle system in the canteen carrier and cut down on wasted space that you might have with the gen 3 water bottle carrier. The bottle carrier, however, allows you to upgrade to the larger 64 oz bottle, 48 oz cup/pot and stove without having to get a different bag. As far as the shoulder strap and clips go, improvise, adapt and overcome. Clips are replaceable and longer straps can be found or made. You could use the strap around your waste instead of your shoulder if you don't feel like replacing the strap. The D rings look to be just wide enough to use ALICE clips or a MOLLE converter.
So do you think it would be wise to have both and utilize the items from each system or do you think buying one is sufficient? If so which one do think would make a better overall system?
How does the bottle carrier compare to the one made by Blackhawk? I’ve used that one for years with a Nalgene bottle titanium cup set up. Been superb. I do wish the zipper wasn’t so tight though.
The Pathfinder water bottle carrier is bigger. So getting the cup out of the bottom is much easier. The Pathfinder doesn't have that liner on the inside, so nothing gets caught on the way out. I think it's worth the money just to be able to get the cup out of the bottom, but the fact that it is bigger also means the front pocket is bigger as well. This means fitting spoons and other things in the front pocket is also easier.
I think the lip on the canteen mouth is by design to give a spot for the fish mouth spreader to catch onto... cleaning IS an issue in general... however IF you are just using water in it AND from time to time putting it into the fire to boil the water the germs if any will be killed... I like the design of the canteen ..... I will not be getting either anytime soon as out of my price range AND what I have put together way cheaper that works good so far...
Although I can't confirm if it is still available, My daughter found a Rothco bag that is exactly the same as the canteen pouch. I called it her "tactical purse" until she finally gave it to me. Over time, I have basically piecemealed a similar kit together that isn't the Pathfinder name brand. The canteen cup and handle design is actually an original military design. I have 2 of the USGI cups with that locking handle. I do not however have a metal/steel canteen. I have several USGI green plastic canteens and I have a couple of the Nalgene canteens that are the exact dimensions of the canteen and fit in the cup. I also have a couple of Rothco canteen cup lids that I have bent the lip out on to fit the USGI cup. Thanks for the side-by-side comparison. It gave me some info I needed to add to my own kit. Question: In comparing the Condor H20 bottle pouch and the Pathfinder pouch (new or old gen), do you personally see any real advantage for any bottle pouch being padded or insulated like the Condor? I've heard that is one of the key differences in the bottle cup and stove fitting tight and often hard to remove. The non-insulated pouches tend to not have that issue. Opinion?
I have a black Condor water bottle pouch so that might be why I don't notice any difference with it being insulated. The big advantage of the new Pathfinder bottle pouch is that it is bigger. If using a 32oz Nalgene as a base measurement. There is still a 1-inch gap to the side of the Nalgene and a 2-inch gap to the top zipper with the Pathfinder. The Condor fits the Nalgene perfectly with no space on the side and is flush with the top zipper. That has been the biggest advantage to the Pathfinder that I have found. Everything goes in and out really easily because I can fit my hand down the side even with the bottle and cup nesting together. The other advantage is because it is a bigger pouch the front zipper pocket is also bigger. The bigger pouch allows me to carry my Sawyer Squeeze and both my Orange 2 liter CNOC dirty water bag and Blue 2 liter CNOC clean water bag and Sawyer coupler for gravity filtering my water. With the full filter system in the pouch pocket, the cup is more difficult to get out but still WAY easier than getting the cup out of the Conder pouch with nothing in the front pouch. Hopefully, you found this helpful and not too confusing. Thank You so much for watching I really appreciate your support.
Thank You so much for sharing your knowledge I really appreciate it!!! Can't you do the same thing with the webbing though? I wonder why they chose D-rings I would think they would cost more and not be as versatile.
wolf pack woodcraft the webbing should be able to snap over a belt on your hip. The use of the d rings should allow for weaving the straps thru pal webbing. Try it on a belt. Not sure on the cost of d ring vs snaps tho. I just order the canteen set last night. Looks like it will be a good deal. Planning an appalachia trail adventure and needed a kit to boil water to drink and heat up moutain house type meals . How heavy is the water bottle kit
The water bottle, cup, lid, wood stove comes in about 1 pound 3 ounces and with the bag, it's about 1 pound 11 ounces. It isn't the lightest kit but it is very durable and will last a lifetime if taken care of.
the d-rings are supposed to make it easier to weave molle thru...and it'll moll to pouches/bags with uneven webbing...but it does make it a bit more floppy when it's attached...
How many oz does the canteen hold? Ive never used purification tabs but if i had to, would it still be the same amount or would i have to add another half or somethin like that?
The canteen holds 40oz to the top and the water bottle holds 38 to the top. If you just fill the water bottle to the shoulder it is 32oz and the canteen is 36oz. Each tab is going to treat a different amount of water so make sure you read the package.
Nice presentation. You obviously know the product, pros & cons, Design features and advantages. I'm shopping for a mess kit & will probably get the canteen to fit the helikon tex essentials kit bag.
does the canteen come with the smaller pouch or do you need to buy the bag to get it? Does the canteen with cup and stove fit in a standard milspec canvas holder?
I don't think it comes with the smaller bag anymore but I'm not really sure. No, it will not fit into a mil-spec canteen holder the Pathfinder canteen has straight walls and doesn't taper at the bottom. So the bottom is too wide for normal mil-spec canteen holders.
Thanks for your thorough and outstanding review of these two systems. I have both and they both have their pros and cons. But with that said, I've enjoyed using both of them when I get outside or when canoeing. Keep up the great videos.
Thank You so much. Yeah, it really is a nice kit. A little pricey but not as bad as the Heavy Cover Titanium option. I would recommend it. The build quality of the canteen, cup, lid, and stove are really good but I wish I would have saved the money and got a different molle pouch for it right away.
I had been looking to get a second bottle and cup set but loved the canteen. I had it on order until I saw this and realized you can’t make char with the canteen as I thought it fit snuggly inside upside down so thank you for this review as I ended up switching to the bottle. Excellent product knowledge very thorough.
Dang I’m late too this whole genre I am younger to be fair, i really like doing stuff how people always have, before the 60’s, don’t mean dated just the real type of people before the phone-glued era. great information thanks man
Awesome Review dude! love it.. you really made the decision for me! thanks man! had a hard time finding a good steel bottle. this is great! answered all my questions and showed all the cool stuff it can do!
This is one of the most thorough comparison videos I have seen for these kits. I put together a bottle kit trading gear on a facebook group and ended up with the pathfinder cup / lid / fish mouth spreader, an off brand bottle pouch, and a 40oz Klean Kanteen. I am pretty happy with it, but I don't have a pot stand like yours. I made one out of some wire coat hanger, mostly for use with my Trangia spirit burner. After this vid I have sub'd. Cheers man.
The pot stand works really well but at the end of the day, it is just thin metal circle with a top. The best part about it is that it fits around the nesting cup and takes up no extra space. I like using the Pathfinder alcohol stove myself. I like how it is much bigger than the Trangia and can hold a lot more fuel. All in all, I would say you have a really great kit. Thank You so much for watching and for all the support it really means a lot.
@@newageselfreliance I looked at the pathfinder alcohol stove but the cost to get it here in Canada was prohibitive given the Trangia was around $20. So far I am very happy with the kit. Cheers
really good overview and comparison. I didn't see anything with either that an easy modification couldn't fix. Gorilla tape on the cup handles, drilling holes or spreader slots in the canteen lid, etc. I have a Go Time Gear bottle bag with a Blackthorn-USA bottle nested in a Toaks 500ml cup. The bottle bag is so narrow it is a fight to get the Toaks cup, or any other, out. I settled on a pull string (wide ribbon really) and it helps somewhat. I use the same pull system to get my 100G propane can out of my Stanley too. Great video, thx.
You can get just the Water Bottle Bag for about $28 www.selfrelianceoutfitters.com/products/pathfinder-bottle-bag-gen3-black It only comes in black at the moment. I don't know if they changed colors or if they are gonna offer different colors. The larger bag really is nice for carrying the extra gear and easily getting everything in and out.
I bought the water bottle system a while ago and used it daily, for a year straight in Arizona, during my trek of the 800 mile AZ Trail. It worked absolutely perfect, flawlessly. However, I did not like the Pathfinder burner. It didn't work good with the stove, or by itself, It was just too tall. So, in my opinion the Swiss made Trangia Alcohol Burner is a better choice for use with the Pathfinder bottle system. It's small, proven and a workhorse. Great review, thank you.
I really like the Pathfinder water bottle. I use the Pathfinder alcohol stove all the time. I like the large size because of the amount of fuel it holds and how everything is all in one sealed container. If I was doing a longer hike I would probably bring a my titanium canister stove. It is much lighter and easier to use.
Here is a video of my lightweight system - th-cam.com/video/w_T1fyFjnq8/w-d-xo.html Also here is a video on different alcohol burners - th-cam.com/video/VTKhj1Ic1gc/w-d-xo.html
@@newageselfreliance For a long time I used canister stoves. But, the problem is canisters are hard to find on or off the trail. When I'm Bushcrafting, the Alcohol burner is almost always just a backup. The only time I use a Alcohol burner is when hiking for short duration or when raining or during burn bans or in certain desert locations that lack wood (I live in Prescott AZ, close to Lundin and Nester). Both of those dudes use nothing but a cup and a bottle, over a fire.
@@newageselfreliance The main reasons I prefer Alcohol stoves and why I think they're extremely popular right now in Ultralight hiking. Lightness, ruggedness, ease of use, availability of fuel (unrivaled), dual purpose, ext.. Also, I use 190 proof Everclear as the fuel. It serves many purposes other then fuel; disinfectant, cleaning agent for knives, can be used instead of mouthwash, extremely good bug-spray targeting mosquitoes (spray bottle with lemon zest - smells like lemons not alcohol), herbal tinctures and infusions for medicinal herbs, prevents and kills most molds, ext.. Oh yeah, and you can drink it after a long hard day to relax. Mix it with pine needle tea - the pintonic (I named it) for sore throats.
It is illegal to own or sell 190 proof alcohol in Minnesota, that is why I use the yellow Heet for fuel tanks. Alcohol stoves are very simple to use but spilling is a big concern to a lot of people. There are a ton of pros and cons for every system, it's just a matter of knowing what's out there and seeing which one works best for your own personal needs.
Great review. I just bought the water bottle and cup set. I found a seam inside the water bottle. The cup handles on mine are bigger and angle down so it's easy to get your whole hand insides the handles, but the lid tab will not stay up and it is friction fit also.
You can tap on the "sleeve" that holds the lid tap and it will create more friction to help keep it up. I'm glad they made more room in the handle. How do you like the system so far?
I really enjoy the kit but would like it better if the bottle was made with one piece like yours without a seam. It speaks of inconsistent quality control. Thanks for an outstanding review.
I hope you are an employee of the Pathfinder shop! You did a very good job of reviewing this equipment! Now I have to add my two cents. I have had very bad luck with their products. I have not given up on them but I do shop around before heading their way. Hopefully you will have as good experience as I have had poor experience with them! Thanks
I have no affiliation with the Pathfinder Shop. I wish I did lol. I have bought a lot of their gear and really enjoy most of it. The only issues I have had is with one of their knives. The handle is very uncomfortable. I know it that is a personal preference but I can't use it because of it. Thank You so much for your feedback, I really appreciate your support.
The alcohol stove needs to be as flat as possible to work properly. That being said if you can get it flat enough both work really well. The Round cup fits on the alcohol stover really well. When it comes to the "bean" shape of the canteen cup it still works really well but you might want to be a little mindful of making sure your not setting the cup to far to one side.
Thank you soo much for this vid; I e been waiting for this comparison for 2 years. Uve asked every TT host on every channel I'm subbed to just to tell me their opinion on which works better in the field, I didnt even request a vid on it but not ONE responded to that ques. So again thank you. My friend told me what the d rings were for but I have a raging flu and wasnt pating attention, I'll up date that info asap. Now, going back to bed to sweat out this darn fever.
I hope you get better. People are saying that the D-rings are for easy molle attachment, however, I think they kinda get in the way of everything else. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I try to answer every comment.
I would just get both, because they both provide different benefits and if one is destroyed, you'll still have parts of both. When I was in the service we had a camelbak and plastic canteens.
I'm starting to find the advantage each brings. I like how the canteen doesn't slosh around when attached to molle webbing. Thank You so much for watching I really appreciate your support!!!
Imo the D rings serve two purposes. First purpose is some packs only have daisy chain webbing and not molle so the D rings allow you to attach the pouch to packs designed that way. Either with straps or paracord. The other possible purpose is when you attach any molle straps to your pack your supposed to go under and over through the D rings. Normally pouches like this have molle webbing instead of D rings but it will serve the same purpose. So you alternate the button strap through your packs molle webbing and through the D rings. Every other. Much easier to show you than to explain but i hope this helps you some? Really like that short pouch! Just kinda wish it had a grommet in the bottom for drainage. Hike on!!
I never considered a daisy chain. I'm sure the D-rings would make attaching this to a daisy chain or other straps much easier. Thank you so much for sharing.
Excellent review sir. Like your comments about the exterior-rolled lip of the water bottle, very thoughtful. I prefer the bottle to the canteen. I wish the Pathfinder bottle bag came in a light grey color - but I’ve got my eye on the coyote tan.
These "bushcraft" companies feed off of the inherent ignorance from this community toward gear made from, or to replicate, tactical gear. Many companies, mostly subpar, make nylon, tactical-looking, packs, pouches and accessories. They know, full well that the shit they pull on the outdoor market won't fly on the tactical market. Understand this, there are different manufacturers nylon, but only one can be called Cordura. Then there are different ratings of said Cordura or nylon gauged in denier (100d, 200d, etc, up to the heaviest in common use on the battlefield, 1000d). As a note, since the early 2000s, many tactical companies have backed down to 500d, simply for the weight savings. In addition to base material, these companies also prey on the fact that most of the outdoors market doesn't know anything about different qualities and weights of thread, let alone the difference between the various types of stitching, and what works best for any particular application. I'm not at all dissing the maker of this video as he is trying to share what he has found. It's the ones that count on ad dollars, like Gideon and Tim, that should be ashamed of themselves.
Most people don't need the military level of durability. The military specs everything like it's going to be thrown out an airplane for ten years. Lighter weight nylon to hold on to a canteen is just fine for me; It just has to hold the canteen. I don't have the time nor energy to wear it out.
Hi, Many thanks for your easy and detailed presentation. I am following you from Iraq, Basra ( I do not know if you ever heard about this place), however, I do wonder if the canteen can keep the water cold and/ or heat for few hours. ( forgive my poor English wording, its not my native).
The canteen is not insulated so it will not keep your drinks cold and if you put boiling water or really hot coffee inside the canteen it will be to hot to hold without gloves on.
1 thing I wanted 2 add about the floppy handles. Insert a 3" Dia steel pipe into the cup & gently tap the sleeve that hold the handles 2 the cup, against the pipe. This will make Ur bails\handles stiff like new...
Does anyone know if the Source water bottle attachment works on these?
I went to their page to make sure because I had heard mixed opinions(no one gave clear facts in an hour long debate). While they do not list any known metal bottles, nalgene bottles ARE on there. Best bet would be to contact Source directly and ask point blank if they fit/work on the Pathfinder bottles.
I do not believe it would fit as the lid/mouth size is a bit smaller than a standard Nalgene bottle.
Nice one
Good review buddy, thanks. I find the 32 oz is not enough for me. I have the klean kanteen 40 oz. It fits inside my titanium 700 pot.
For a belt u gotta put molly strap thru plastic d rings and put ur belt thru
I have the water bottle kit but I have it in the molle pouch
I use the canteen and it's very good. The green case is useful because you can put it on your belt for easy access and it holds the cup and canteen together.
@@etvonrashke3763so how did that cashe bottle hold up?
The rings on the back allow for it to be attached via clips to your belt as well if your familiar with the mostly associated Vietnam Era, "H" or "Y" Harness for your direct level 2 gear. Level 3 - Pack Contents, Level - 2 LBV/LBE Gear, Level - 1 Gear in trousers, pockets, attached to uniform belt.
I have been using the canteen kit for years. And that style cup most of my life. I never figured out that form in the handle trick. Excellent! Thank you.
It really is a cool little trick. You just have to be careful and make sure you have a solid fork.
Thank you for the great video and comparison!
The D rings on the back of the canteen pouch are to make it easier to
Mount on belts of different width sizes. Also, you can adjust how high or low you want the pouch to sit!
Couldn't Molle Webbing do the same thing? I'm not a fan of the D rings personally but I'm sure just like everything else it's a personal preference.
Simple honest, sincere review by a pleasant chap, thanks
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
Slip the straps inside the D rings, snap them in. Then use the D rings to attach the pouch to something. (In the event the straps don't fit the situation.)
It's actually very smart. Great review bud. Very thorough and well done. Thanks for the video.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Couldn't you do the same thing with standard Molle webbing though?
@@newageselfreliance Yup. Different design. I'd ask the company directly. They would probably be very willing to give you the full explanation on why D rings. Happy New Year!
This was more thorough than Canterbury’s review! Thank you!
I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
Thank You so much for your feedback I really appreciate your support.
@@newageselfreliance if I'm not mistaken, the outer pouch is available by itself from SRO.
I love your attention to detail. You bring up points in your comparison that other people overlook like using the fork as a handle extension for the canteen cup, the lip in the canteen that can cause bacteria build up if not properly cleaned, among other points. I appreciate your analysis. You have gained a new subscriber.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I really do appreciate your feedback.
That was not only an interesting discussion on these two systems, but it was incredibly thorough as well. Wow, great job! Thank you, sir.
Thank you so much for watching. I truly appreciate the support.
Great comparison
I definitely agree!
I always wanted to see the difference between the two. Great video!
Thank you so much for watching. I'm glad I could help.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Having a WWII Canteen is a treasure and being your moms must make it extremely special.
I'm really glad I could help. I use the Water Bottle system the most. It just feels more natural drinking from a bottle than a canteen.
That's what I do with my Stanley cook set that comes with the 2 green cups.
You will have to let me know what you think of it. I still use mine all the time and really enjoy it.
@@newageselfreliance Once the weather turns more reliable and warmer I'll be out fishing and hiking so I'll make sure to let you know how it turned out.
I subbed because your ability to thoroughly cover a topic and clear talk is outstanding!
Thank You I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. That is good advice and I plan to try that. I'm always looking for easier ways to clean my bottles.
Thanks for the detailed side by side comparison!
Glad it was helpful!
Great comparisons! I have a quick question. Will the water bottle fit into the water bottle pouch on the sides of most ordinary backpacks?
Yes the 32oz water bottle is about the same size as a Nalgene 32 plastic bottle. It fits in the mesh pocket on all of my packs.
Great reveiw. I always thought the water bottle set was a little better
I use the water bottle more than the canteen. I just like the shape of it better. If feels more like drinking out of a standard drinking glass like I use at home.
Pretty Solid in depth comparison without bias. Nice work.

I just utilize my M1956 (ILCE) system from Vietnam. Has served me well all these years.
I have one of those as well. From the Vietnam war. I never use it because I don't want anything to happen to it but I know they are really nice pieces of kit.
Couldn't decide which one of these to get, so I got both. Thanks.
Great Choice. What do you think of them?
@@newageselfreliance Well, I ordered both. Supposed to be here later this week.

Excellent overview. I like seeing someone be thorough and methodical.
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
Excellent detailed review of the pros and cons of both products..Was a big help in me deciding on which one will work for me!

@@newageselfreliance
Well even though the canteen kit is nice and has more pouch accessories I went with the water bottle kit for the non worry factor of having to extra clean the bottle itself "seamless on the inside"
I purchased a Helikon Foxtrot MK2 for my bottle kit to make up for the less pouch accessories
Nice comparison. Helped me decide on which one I wanted. Went with the Canteen kit. Like the fact you get 2 pouches with the canteen.
I do like the canteen system it is very well designed. You will have to let me know what you think of it.

I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate your support.
Great review. Thank you for the details. I bought the Canteen Pouch separate and use it with my water bottle and it gives me a lot more room to add some other items.
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. They use to sell the canteen pouch with the water bottle as a system. I don't know why they stopped.
😂Fighting Mt.Lions always carry Cat Nip in a Ziplock Bag,The Lions turn into big ole Puddy Cats ,Loving and Kind😂😂😂.
Wow this review was actually damn good. The info about the seams and lips help me decide!
Which one did you decide on? I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
You were very thorough and informative in your video. Thank you for that. It's really helpful for us.
I'm really glad I could help.
So the true solution here is to run them both. One on each side of the pack so you have best of both worlds. I have the canteen set already, but I think I will order the water bottle set for my son. Great video. Thanks for the info!
I'm glad I own both but I know it's not in everyone's budget. You will have to let me know what you think of the water bottle system.
Outstanding review and video! Great attention to detail and explanation of pros and cons both systems. Just subscribed to your channel. Keep up the great work!
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you so much for the support.
Waist not waste....
waist is near your belly...
waste is crap you throw in the trash
@@newageselfreliance Thank you for that information.
Thank You so much for watching! I truly appreciate the Support!
Great video. Trying to decide between the two. This has been very helpful. Probably going to go for the Canteen kit.
I really like the Canteen kit. I have used the water bottle kit the most but that's only because I've owned it longer.
The d rings on the back will allow you to weave the molle thru as normal but also would allow you to attach slings or lash it to somerhing.
I'm not really a fan of the D-rings. I wish they would have just used standard webbing.
This is one of the best review / comparison videos I've ever seen, super straightforward. Subscribed
I'm really glad you enjoyed the video. I appreciate the support.
You obviously know the product, pros & cons,
Design features and advantages.
I'm shopping for a mess kit & will probably get the canteen to fit the helikon tex essentials kit bag.
I just looked up the Helikon Tex kit bag and now I want one lol. Is the build quality as good as it looks?
I have their canteen and its the best one in my lifetime, well worth the cost. Previous canteen's there's always a lid problem. Daves is good!
I really like the canteen as well. I haven't had any issues with the lid leaking.
does the canteen come with the smaller pouch or do you need to buy the bag to get it? Does the canteen with cup and stove fit in a standard milspec canvas holder?
I don't think it comes with the smaller bag anymore but I'm not really sure. No, it will not fit into a mil-spec canteen holder the Pathfinder canteen has straight walls and doesn't taper at the bottom. So the bottom is too wide for normal mil-spec canteen holders.
Thanks for your thorough and outstanding review of these two systems. I have both and they both have their pros and cons. But with that said, I've enjoyed using both of them when I get outside or when canoeing. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you so much for the support, it really means a lot to us.
Ive looked at the pathfinder canteen for awhile. Great video brother.
Glad I could help!
Just bring a small tin to make char cloth.
Dang I’m late too this whole genre I am younger to be fair, i really like doing stuff how people always have, before the 60’s, don’t mean dated just the real type of people before the phone-glued era. great information thanks man
It's funny how today people talk about how "there is a lot to learn about" but back then it was just normal everyday life.
Awesome Review dude! love it.. you really made the decision for me! thanks man! had a hard time finding a good steel bottle. this is great! answered all my questions and showed all the cool stuff it can do!
Glad I could help!
Thank you for this video. Today I was trying to figure out which set I want and your very thorough review helps a lot.
Glad I could help.
Cheers
Exceptional review buddy and you helped me decide! Ill go with the canteen! Stay safe and healthy! Regards from Sparta,🇬🇷
I'm glad I could help.
It was very thorough and help me decide as well.
Thanks for the excellent comparison! It’s been a huge help for me.
I'm really glad I could help.
🎉 Drill your own drain holes on the other side of the lid.
Great review😊
That would work. I like to show products as is so people watching know exactly what they are spending their money on.
really good overview and comparison.
This is one of your best presented videos m8
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
Here is a video of my lightweight system - th-cam.com/video/w_T1fyFjnq8/w-d-xo.html
Also here is a video on different alcohol burners - th-cam.com/video/VTKhj1Ic1gc/w-d-xo.html
Awesome comparison video. I’m wondering about using the canteen pouch and the bottle set to make a day hike bushcraft kit.
A friend of mine did a video doing just that. Jiujitsu2000 is his channel I'm sure you will enjoy his video th-cam.com/video/f6jb_e72GmI/w-d-xo.html
Have you compared the time it takes to boil water in each? Thanks.
No I have not. I'll have to make a video on that this summer.
Love it Bro. Full in depth and thorough ;) You're good at giving full details :)
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I really appreciate the support.
Thanks mate all the way from australia great thorough presentation
Glad you enjoyed it
How do they both work with the alcohol stove since it’s sitting on the ground.
The alcohol stove needs to be as flat as possible to work properly. That being said if you can get it flat enough both work really well. The Round cup fits on the alcohol stover really well. When it comes to the "bean" shape of the canteen cup it still works really well but you might want to be a little mindful of making sure your not setting the cup to far to one side.
if you had to pick one system which one would you go with?
I like the water bottle shape over the canteen. I have used the water bottle so much more than the canteen and it's just what I am used to using.
You thread the snap connectors in and out through the D rings and the molly straps so your pouch don't slide up and down. Thanks for the video.
Great review, thanks for posting. Answers all of my questions!
I'm really glad I could help.
You could spray the the canteen lid orange or another bright color.
Hey.... excellent review. Really learned alot from you. Nice job.
Thank You so much for watching. I truly appreciate the Support.
The friction fit is good for straining water from pasta. You can drill holes in the lid of the canteen cup.
I always use a stick when draining hot water from my cup. Better safe than sorry.
Excellent review sir. Like your comments about the exterior-rolled lip of the water bottle, very thoughtful. I prefer the bottle to the canteen. I wish the Pathfinder bottle bag came in a light grey color - but I’ve got my eye on the coyote tan.
I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I use the bottle way more than I do the canteen. I just prefer the shape of the bottle over the canteen.
Are you saying I shouldn’t buy a pathfinder canteen and if so what would you recommend?
Most people don't need the military level of durability. The military specs everything like it's going to be thrown out an airplane for ten years. Lighter weight nylon to hold on to a canteen is just fine for me; It just has to hold the canteen. I don't have the time nor energy to wear it out.
bottle and nesting cup fit inside side pouches of a good rucksack so no need for large heavy unnecessary pathfinder bags!
The pouch is nice if you are attaching it to molle webbing on the outside of the pack.
My is lacking room so the pathfinder bags will be great to attach to my bag
I used a punch to add friction. I heard of people using a pipe cleaner as well, just to tighten things up.
