      Then you would hate every single piece of adaptation to ever exist. As no adaptations sticks to the source material 100%. You think the Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings movies didn't remove major character moments to tell a better story in the film format? Do you think the One Piece adaptation is even close to the manga or anime?

    No matter what... Koh will always be frightning... and creepy. To think that he preys on those who are lost in the Fog of Lost Souls... And the changing of the faces... it is as I imagined. Nice touch in making him speak using the person's voice, instead of keeping his own. Altough it probably would make him sound even creepier if he kept the same voice. And I like that he has history with other Avatars besides Kuruk.

    @alyssabullock6421 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +262

    They animated him really well, but the voice and Aang's "fear" just dont do it for me.
    There's no reason for Koh to even say "Someone who can resist?" because in the animated series, he's very implied to not give a crap if Aang tries to be serious or not. He actually gets eager and goes "it's been a long time since i've added a child's face to my collection".
    He does not show surprise, instead he has smooth, threatening words, and is capable of snapping to express pure anger with ease. He was much less predictable, but this version of him is more stale and doesn't use a voice range to show off his emotions.
    He LOOKS scary, but his acting needs work.
    Also Aang actually runs away?? In the OG, Aang has a brief moment where he breaks character when Koh isnt looking at him, because he's excited about learning the koi fish are the secret to saving the Northern Watertribe, and Koh INSTANTLY tries to take advantage of it before Aang is quick to keep his composure.
    It's very tense, very spooky, very risky. It makes it feel like ONE mistake can be the end of Aang's life. But in this version, Aang actually shows emotion and gets SCARED. It doesn't make sense.
    Also what even IS the point of Aang meeting him if he doesnt reveal the information about the koi fish in the first place?! Completely useless screentime, you might as well have kept him out just like the terrible movie did!

    • @RJLiams
      @RJLiams 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Seems most of your criticism is just, "it's not like the cartoon." Which is a really silly argument. If all you wanted was the cartoon again then go watch the cartoon.
      Example, "But in this version, Aang actually shows emotion and gets SCARED. It doesn't make sense." Probably because how this Koh hunts isn't the same as the cartoon. It's clear that this Koh doesn't use emotion to catch it's prey. It uses the mist to trap people. Yet, you're trying to argue that this Koh follows the same logic to the cartoon.

      @@RJLiams nothing about it being a live adaptation means it has to be different from the original nor should it be expected that there will be big differences compared to the original, some fine nuanced differences here & there such as extra details or scenes, sure, big core changes to the plot or characters, not very cool, it is called Avatar the Last Airbender & not something else, aka thats exactly what we would expect, a show that actually lives up to its name, not a show that makes changes when none were asked that aren't even good changes imo. There is a reason Brian & Michael walked away from this series, whatever differences the director of this show wanted to implement, adapting the original creator's vision should have been #1 priority.

      @alyssabullock6421 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      @@RJLiams The entire point of Aang not showing emotion made the scene even MORE scary though.
      The fact that one error in emotion can literally kill him added a layer of danger to the encounter the Netflix one doesnt give.
      But I could probably brush that off if Koh actually had PURPOSE in this scene.
      There's no reason for Aang to even meet him except for the fear aspect, because Koh doesn't even tell him about the koi fish, which is the entire reason Aang went to see him in the first place.
      By removing that crucial detail, it ultimately makes Koh's character pointless for anything except to be a frightening face we see one time and never again.
      He only shows up ONCE and they couldnt even do it properly. And there's nothing wrong with wanting a live action adaptation to respect the original material, because people LOVED Avatar for a reason. And Netflix does not seem to understand that reason.

    • @Shamanized
      @Shamanized 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +19

      @@RJLiams No definitely not the same criticism, they're pointing out the reasons it was there in the original, what made it incredible, and I can go on about why it would be even MORE powerful in this version. Live action is so good when it comes to creating tension so the way the original scene was structured should only made this version superior but, things were changed for the worse and it's difficult to see why, so it's frustrating. Change is absolutely necessary in adaptations but here it feels more like a huge missed opportunity to play to live-action's strengths.
      Here, giving Koh the more rough and almost-monstrous voice instead of the calm and silky one Koh had before also seems like a downgrade; there was a beautiful dichotomy between Koh's body and Koh's voice, and the sweet voice also had great contrast opportunity for when Koh yells at Aang to, again, try and scare Aang into showing emotion.
      I love the original but there's so many little aspects that can get kicked to the curve, but this scene wasn't one of them. I'm glad they at least kept the character even if Koh was downgraded, cause it was even more baffling to me that horror-legend M. Night removed the horror-character entirely from his version.

      In the Netflix Adaptation, Kou doesn't steal your face by showing emotion directly, he does so by trapping you in an illusion of your most emotional moments in your life. If you fall for this illusion, you become trapped in Kou's lair and your face is lost forever. Aang had enough will to resist Kou's illusion, but Katara and Sokka could not. So Kou held them hostage until the Avatar returned what he stole from Kou in a previous life. It is implied that Kuruk wanted vengeance for having his loved one's face stolen. And Roku fulfilled that by stealing a possession that belonged to Kou's mother as leverage. That is why Kou let his hostages free after Aang returned the totem.

    Koh was a truly remarkable character. Despite harboring personal resentment toward the Avatar, he chose to offer his assistance. He recognized the catastrophic consequences that would arise if Tui, the Moon Spirit, perished, throwing the world into disarray. While it is the Avatar's responsibility to maintain balance, Koh understood that every individual's actions or inactions also significantly impacted the world's equilibrium. By aiding Aang, he was fulfilling his own duty to uphold the world's balance.

    Koh’s Mother, the Mother of Faces, is an ancient spirit who gave all lifeforms their faces and identities. She also gave Ursa, Zuko and Azula’s Mother, a new identity and sensing her deep emotional pain, wiped her memories so she could start over and be happy. The Mother of Faces is mostly benevolent and helpful, she’s very powerful and thag power can sometimes instill fear into others but she was mostly good. She would always help humans by giving them a new identity so they could leave their sad, wretched lives behind them and start anew. I wonder why she was imprisoned by the Avatar. Maybe to spite Koh for stealing the face of the woman he loved. She doesn’t always support Koh either, sometimes she condemns his actions but a boy will always love his mother no matter what.

    The CGI on Koh is incredible. I'll just get that out of the way before I rip this apart.
    They completely misunderstood what made Koh such a terrifying creature. It's not just what he looks like and can steal your face. It's that you can not show ANY emotion when you meet him or your face will be stolen. That's terrifying. Removing that aspect makes him kind of a generic monster. Which sucks because George Takei voiced him so perfectly!

Further, mother of faces has son and it is called Koh. Instead of granting new face, Koh steals people faces unlike her mother. Legend says that koh really miss his mother. Everyone is talking about how Aang would have been face-stolen by Koh instantly which is fair. Hear me out though, the thing this series does well is take a character with way too brief an appearance and who plays a lawful neutral/evil, and turns them into a much better utilized and foreboding antagonist.
    Also, this Koh seems to feed specifically on despair, not the mere presence of emotion, and Aang senses right away that it’s a trap, hence why Koh says Aang can resist

    Too many people are trying to compare this tic for tac with the animation, and that’s why you can’t enjoy things. I love that they made small changes to Aang meeting Koh. Aang doesnt even know who he is, which he did prior to meeting him in the animation. So it really makes sense why the scenarios are different if youre not trying to die in the hill of “this wasnt in the anime”.
