, that is three notes, are being played on the right. Exercise four is about playing four notes for each bass note or chord. It's a useful control thing. Exercise five is about pulsing - the technique of getting a good rolling rythm by rhythmically changing the volume during long notes. It's useful in many relatively slower tunes and instantly sounds old fashioned, which I like 'cos I'm an old-fashioned boy!

A key part of melodeon playing is keeping the bass and chord work very short - so that, for example, if you need to play the next note up or down in the scale on your right hand the note or chord on your left hand is already over, so there's no clash. Another is to push the box before you hit the note in order to produce a strong musical note from the beginning. so that's part of what all this is about.
Exercise three is about playing chords on the left while triplets - eg in jigs or hornpipes

I always wondered why bass and bass chords were kept short.
Now you have explained about note clashing I fully get it.
      Thanks Gavin.
I will do those exercises but also with a metronome.
I metronome disciplines me and I have to conform with it.
It gives me great achievement value to

@@petercane6376 In dance tunes we also keep notes short for danceability.
Good luck with your practising and progress!

OK seem to have got on top of exercises 1 and 2 - brain went into melt down at exercise three! This is hard but somehow satisfying when you finally get the fingers doing what you want - good exercises for building muscle memory and muscle as well especially if you stray outside the octave with the ‘pinky’. . I can feel the benefit as soon as I start a tune after playing the exercises so I'll keep at it until it becomes second nature...or my brain totally evaporates which ever is sooner!

They're harder than they look, aren't they? But I'm sure these exercises are good for controlling the box, for 'homing' your fingers and for getting the two sides independent from each other.

I'm try to work on these exercises to help with getting the two ends working separately, but being a beginner to music I'm having difficulty in working out what is happening some of the time. Any chance of a brief description of what is happening in each exercise please. I can cope with 1 and 2, but I can't work out what is happening after that.
