      Hello Grass Daddy, Let me start by saying I am impressed with not only you Amazing Lawn Job but your Video making. Bravo, we bought a home in central florida where there was 3 inches of leaves on 2 acres of lawn for years.... two years later and 17 trees cut down and a million pounds of seed and fertilizer it looked good, I came up with the bright idea 2 weeks ago to put sprinklers in and after digging the trenches it has rained for 2 weeks straight and now all the dirt displaced to side is growing grass and weeds through because of all the rain...I am ready to jump!

      Where do you think the chemicals disappear when you have killed all the grass? You poison your soil and groundwater that then gets into lakes, etc.
      But you have a nice lawn, it's important!

    • @rphandyman6092
      @rphandyman6092 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      More importantly than growing a great looking lawn, dont you think your children's health is the priority? I would think that having them run across and play in the areas where you're putting chemicals down cannot be a good thing...

    Thank you for making this process possible for a lawn novice. We had sod put down before we moved into our formerly abandoned, newly renovated house. After 2 years (with a no chemicals approach) the whole front lawn died. It seemed hopeless until one morning, I searched for what to do with a dead lawn and it brought me to your videos. I studied your recommended playlists, wrote down and followed each step (Using sod grade seed, rolling it.)
    The little green sprigs are starting to pop up and I feel like a proud mama. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and breaking it down into easy steps.

      Good video but if you want a really good lawn forget the starter fertilizer instead mix one to one peat and quality manure spread the same as peat. The manure should not be soaking wet and it should have white fungal growth in it. Once the seed is down rake it in, the manure will lose its smell after a few hours it contains all the enzymes needed to make the seed germinate and will have bacteria and fungi that the soil needs.

    Grass Daddy, what do you think, is it too late in the Spring to do a renovation in New Jersey? I was going to spray the herbicide, let everything die off, rototill it, add one tri-axle load of topsoil, and then grade everything. My lawn is mostly shaded (80%) although there are sections that get direct sunlight but only for a few hours (if even that long).

  • @Drewg351
    @Drewg351 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks bud. You made it easy to understand and gave me confidence that "I can actually do this". I've been hesitant, and going back and forth on whether to do it myself or pay someone. Some of these landscaping guys make it seem more complicated. My lawn is thick, weed free, and looks great compared to all my neighbors, but the previous owners (I bought this house a year ago) used several different types of seed, therefore the lawn is different shades of green and has different textures (thin fescue, KBG, and rye) throughout. Luckily it's mainly just the front lawn with all these different varieties of seed. The back is almost entirely KBG and looks good. I'm going to start it this week. I'm in Minnesota so with KBG taking 30 day's to germinate, I need to start August 1st.

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Drewg351 awesome! That was the goal. It's a lot of hard work but it's not complicated work just physical. Let me know how it turns out!

    • @Drewg351
      @Drewg351 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Grass Daddy, definitely will. I'm going thru all your videos now. If only I could choose between KBG vs going with tall fescue. Both have their strong points. Living in Minnesota, just outside Minneapolis, I suspect both would do ok, with KBG probably handling the cold winters a little better. Decisions, decisions. Thanks again bud.

    Just completed my first lawn Reno. 20k sqft. Wow it's a lot of work and keeping it watered was NOT enjoyable. It looks great I guess. Just looks kind of thin. How long until it thickens up? Most of the seed took to my knowledge and I put 10 ibs per 1000 of tttf.
    So not so much as thicken up but as far as it going into the tiller stage.
    It looks like your yard in this video at 15:50.
    Will it fill in before winter?

    I'm a Canadian temporarily in the UK with my British fiancee. She has a small front yard and a medium backyard.
    The lawn was completely overgrown in the front. almost all weeds. The gravel and slab driveway was completely invisible under the foliage. I mowed, hedge trimmed, and snipped everything as low as I could. Got my hands in the short grass and literally lifted massive sheets of either thin vines or really long and fallen over grass. Eventually I got it all relatively short. I weeded the driveway and trimmed the small trees.
    The backyard was a nightmare. Completely overgrown thorny vines along the entire border of the yard. The thorn vines coiled everywhere, some spanning over 40 feet under the lawn all across the yard. The main bushes of thorn vines stood 6ft tall and about 5 feet outward. The lawn is MUCH larger looking with all that removed. I trimmed trees back, and removed bushes and small unappealing trees. The lawn needed to be mowed 5 times, raked and mowed again. The problem I have is that the grass is very viney and it lays flat so the mower wont cut it. Raking it has been very difficult and doesn't seem to be working well. Tips would be much appreciated.
    I'm at the point where it's at least under control, but I want to just nuke it and kill everything.
    The transformation so far has been incredible. I'd love to give her a decent yard that makes the neighbours jealous.

  • @DanielPDaily

    Did you consider renting a sod cutter to remove the old lawn instead of mowing it? I'm about to go through this whole process myself. I've already killed everything, and now I'm considering renting a sod cutter to remove the grass, and then a tiller to help level out a couple spots in the yard. Any thoughts?

    I think we are in over our heads.... we have a home on 2 acre lot (it used to be farm field here in IN) we purchased in winter so couldn't tell until spring but, previous owners had ONLY done what was required by the bank to close the home loan 3 yrs. previous, so basically we have 2 acres of junk grass/weeds/grabgrass/junk, not to mention it is SOOOOO bumpy and uneven, it defiantly need graded & there is no irritation (which we had at the old house) and I have had lawn companies tell us we need to burn it all off and start over. Which is estimated about $10,000. to hire done (can't afford that) & it's a bit of BIG project for us, mainly the watering in of a new lawn on 2 acre. Any good suggestions for such a large undertaking? I know all our neighbors who have beautiful lawns have to hate looking at ours.

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It can be done but I wouldn't advise it unless you have irrigation. You have to water it more the first summer if you seed in spring because the roots won't be developed. That's why fall is recommended. However if you have irrigation it's much easier to keep alive.

  • @jonplatz2929
    @jonplatz2929 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks man. I'm going for it this year. I have done the kill it and start over before but then the kids grew and lawn care moved down on the list. I think since I'm in Tennessee I will dethatch next week as well as core aerate - I finally broke down and bought a 27 dollar step aerator. Lol. It will do the job, I only have 1/4 acre. My plan is to overseed right after all of that and then do it again in the fall. My lawn is a hot mess but not awful. Have you seen overseeding as a solution work now that I can devote more time to it? I am thinking that a healthy fescue will eventually choke out all the crap...

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fescue won't choke it out but if you keep killing the weeds and overseeding as needed it'll get the job done. Just remember to use the starter with weed preventer ;)

I have 1/4 acre lot, and every gallon of water I use costs me twice (water & sewer), so I would want to understand in advance how many gallons of water I might expect to use with a sprinkler setup if I decide to water my lawn.

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think an inch of water over 1000 sqft is 600 gallons. Many places will allow you to put in a separate meter for irrigation so you aren't charged a sewage bill on it. My system cost $2700 for 5 zones and 36 sprinkler heads, installed. They did the plumbing/everything.

    It ended up looking great. I have some odd ball grass types in my front that I have to work on, I am hoping I can just over seed them out over a couple of seasons.

      You could spot spray with roundup before over seeding, less crazy than the whole thing ;)

    Can you overseed with St Augustine grass? If so, are there any seed types that you recommend?

      Fernando Mendoza
      I’m surprised that you have not received any returns on your question?
      I’d like to comment on Your St Augustine inquiry ..
      Generally the best approach to St. Augustine installations is “plugging it “
      By that I mean to say, graft the flats by breaking into 6”x6” patches and lay those patches (about a foot apart) into-a prepared surface and maintain the space with frequent watering.
      If you need to repair a n existing lawn thar has a portion of health S .A.grass, carefully dig patches of healthy grass and transplant it to the needed areas after you prepared that soil. Allow those areas that you harvested transplant material to “heal” and fill in just as you nurture the transplanted area with care in the same way.
      We used to use Sulfate of Ammonia found in various Garden Supply Stores for periodic greening of our St. Augustine.
      Always set your blades high on the mower (to level out the cut) instead of shaving the lawn down to the root. S. A. Grows more horizontal than fescues and other blade grasses.
      Hope my reply (albeit 6mos. late) imparts some inspiration? Via con Dios

    I'm redoing my mulch, using the type that breaks down into soil. Might be a silly question but, will the tackifier work on holding the mulch in place? I have a few spots where the rain tends to move it around (just a little bit) during heavy rains. Btw, probably spelt "tackifier" wrong but you get the idea lol. Thanks, great video!

    Did you end up tilling? How did you level? I’m in the middle of killing right now. I’m renovating 2K sq ft, and as I use a dethatcher it seems to be broken into fine pieces and fairly level.

    Thinking about doing this to my lawn. I feel like my soil is compacted. Should I do something like try to add some fresh soil before I seed?

    I recently planted Bermuda stembande roots. I water area daily. Now a lot of moss is growing in open spaces, I am concerned in how the moss will compete with Bermuda golf green I planted in backyard. Will Bermuda eventually outgrew the moss???

    I’m sure someone already asked but how long after you sprayed the lawn were you able to seed? I was surprised to see you just put the seed down on the existing dead lawn instead of removing it down to top soil but it worked I’ll probably try this in my backyard which has a slope

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      So you can seed as soon as the glyphosate is dry, HOWEVER, you want to kill it a few weeks before because most likely you will miss spots or new weeds will grow. So it gives you time to apply a 2nd or 3rd time if need be.

    Good info....I am a rookie at this so far I renod two different areas of my yard. One came out awesome and the other is only a week old so there jury is out. In both areas I used a grass seed mix for my location mostly fescue and bluegrass and some rye. I was under the impression that a mix was better for health of the lawn...I guess not yours is incredible. Also in both cases instead of roundup I scraped up the existing old lawn spread new top soil then seeded. I did use peat moss over the top of the seeds.

      Mixes are great for different conditions. Most likely something will grow whereas if you plant a single strain and it doesn't like your conditions it won't come in very good.

      Grass Daddy I didnt realize they have sod quality seed tho I am using Pennington smart seed mix. I looked at the super seed store...it is quite a bit more of an investment. I might get a small bag to try out first to see if I see a difference. I plan on doing about 10k square feet more of my yard this fall

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rich Proto so sod quality is the amount of weed seeds in it not the type of grass. POA annua and POA triv are grassy weeds but since they are grass it's not listed as a weed on labels - instead it is "other crop". Sod quality seed should have 0 weeds and other crop. Box store types will have a % weed and % other crop but the amount varies per bag. Some are better than others.

    First and foremost I gotta say thank u for the awesome videos, ur videos are very detailed and informative. I do have a question though, I just bought my house and I need a huge renovation on the yard. The side of the house apparently had English ivy growing. Being that I used my mower over it, how do I kill them and the roots? Please Help

    • @GrassDaddy
      @GrassDaddy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll need to use Triclopyr, preferably the higher rate brush killer concentration. But you need contact with the leaf so if you buzzed off all the leafs then you'll have to wait till they grow back.

    Thanks for your video! I overseeded my lawn last weekend and I'm not sure if the starter fertilizer I used had weed preventer (tenacity) in it. Hopefully I dont get too many weeds. If I do, is there a product I can use to kill them or will I have to pull by hand? I'd hate to kill my new lawn while its still growing...
