This was always one of my favourite tracks on the Total Recall label. Thank you, it's great to see it up! Appreciate comment about the b-line. I never was quite satisfied with how it sounded on final cut for all the tracks. It never quite seemed to compare to releases by other labels at the time when listened over headphones/bog standard speaker system & didn't sound truly right till played loud over a sound system. With hindsight this was down to using old dub early 92 hardcore records for mixdown reference without proper sub bass representation. It meant the overall perceived loudness ended up being less. Compounding this was going through a phase at the time of liking to layer up multiple harmonically complementary bass lines. There's a Reese bass, FM clately bass" and extra subby 808 kick like components all going on at the same time. It's very much an early prototype of the sound that would develop to become my Acid War alias, and only missed out on an acid line because of the arpeggiated synth😂 We had similar problems with other tracks on the EP but made decision not to recur as didn't have enough cash flow to cover; a decision I still deeply regret as it meant we were disadvantaged as casualty of "loudness war". Ironically evolution of streaming platforms has inadvertently rectified this as compensation applied it benefits music with wider dynamic range (if anyone is interested see my "Cooking up your brain" vlog post on Analogue vs digital debate) The vocal was actually originally from a tech house track by a long term collaborator/Electric Tribe member that I did OTAP stuff with (mainly bgm music for Library & TV use; named after a Thai biscuit I think but eventually ret-conned to The Obese Transvestite Ageing Punks). We did a new school breaks/big beat style mix but couldn't get it to sit quite right & mothballed it. Eventually stumbled back across it & thought fuck it I'm just going to go full on hardcore😂 This was before I'd switched to using Ableton Live, so it was painstakingly edited by hand over a few weeks. Eventually got fed up, which is why the vocal doesn't quite flow naturally. Came back to it after a few weeks and thought it reminded of early hardcore vibe and shifted emphasis, so decided to keep it instead😁 On a tangent this was also around the time when we were doing darker techno, breaks & speed garage influenced tracks as OTAP. We were part of burgeoning community based around Brixton/Oval & contributed our music to a little known webzine/blog called Hyperdub and one of the biggest mistakes we ever made was overlooking the genius of Kode 9, who went on to be a driving force behind the early Dubstep scene🤦♀️ This was following the aftermath of making difficult decision of shelving the original Ectopic Beats label due to financial losses & troubles with our distributors (the first of many times😕) . Having been burned we advised something along lines of "like what you're doing but don't think it's commercially viable" on hearing early demo of Sign of the Dub. It was like nothing had ever heard before but just gave us chills. It was around the time had finished this rework that Hyperdub exploded and that tipped the balance for decision to start up the Total Recall Collective aiming to put out music that gave us chills rather than worrying about financial aspects (and switching to model of collaborative funding & support for promotion/sales between artists, with mutual retention of copyright that would become the basis for approach of Deviant Analogue) We'll be slowly putting up our back catalogue on our Bandcamp page as we celebrate 25 years of The Electric Tribe. This will include re-mastered versions, unreleased mixes etc (depending on what we can find on hard drives/DAT tapes etc) electrictribe.bandcamp.com/ We've still got loads of copies of the vinyl, which will put up as well at some point. If anyone reading this wants a copy in meantime feel free to give us a nudge (I need to clear the space in my house😂) or let us know if any other bits may be after Julian/Penfold aka Hroodbwai aka The Deviant Analogue
