    Sometimes understanding native speakers is not easy. Once I remember when I worked as a translator, a scientist from USA came on business mission to our Institute where they had some business projects. The director of the Institute asked me to meet him and translate his words from English to Russian. I entered his office and there were some people. He asked me to translate his words into Russian and when he started speaking English, it was quite another story and I didn't understand what he was speaking about. That was quite different English and that was not what I had learned or taught about. It was quite fast English. He was speaking fast like in the American movies and I asked him to speak it slower and after three or four attempts I finally understood him with difficulty. I was a bit ashamed of not doing it properly and it was so embarrassing and I was totally dumb. It was horrible and embarrassing. In my view, this happened because we lack spoken English practice with native English speakers.

    Hey, Max! One more great lesson that you've produced. As for those topics you pointed out in your video, I believe that "mumbling" is the most significant problem for us to understand natives speakers. That reminded me those old americans wearing big hats in movies. It is almost impossible to get what they're saying. It is kinda a mix of vocabulary of a specific country region and mumble type thing. Listening teachers (all them) it is "peace of cake", despite linking, fast speech, advanced words, reductions, you name it. When a native uses a good entonation, correct mouth moviment and a widly used vocabulary, It is way better for us to hold a conversation. WAY TO GO! Thanks!

    • @EnglishwithMax
      @EnglishwithMax  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks again, Alexandre! I think you're right - mumbling probably causes the most difficulties. :)

    I, non-native speaker of English nothing to say why I couldn't able to, as you already had done well research and presented admirably.
    I appreciate your hard home work/effort to speak slowly as to understand by non-English people.
    According my own experience it is very difficult to speak/act/ape as native of any language.

      @EnglishwithMax  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're absolutely right. Learning to speak exactly like a native speaker is unrealistic (and not necessary) for the vast majority of people. Lots of teachers claim to be able to teach people to speak like a native, but it's just marketing. ;-)

      I know it's frustrating!
      You might find it easier if you first listen to easier things, and then gradually increase the difficulty of what you are listening to. It's also important to look up words you don't know to increase your vocabulary.

    Yeah, speaking other languages helps a lot. It trains your ear, and also makes you observe many things of your own language, as human expression in general. Okay, so I will tell a related story, because I am bored.
    Once I had an argument with a British friend. I usually speak to him in a relatively okay English accent, but I swap back to Spanish, or whatever I can, when needed. I also simplify my vocabulary, or use Latin rather than Germanic English words when it helps communication. That is because I only accidentally ended up learning English when my main purpose was to lazily learn Lingua Franca. Long live the planet and down with the empire!, and all that.
    So, basically we were having a conversation with an Italian guy and I just started speaking "badly" to him to make myself understood and be welcoming and nice. British friend could not understand a thing, so felt excluded. My point was that the Italian guy with a poor English was making a huge effort to make himself understood and understand, whereas my British friend was not. The thing is that he was actually making an effort, and I was been a bit nazi there. He was just useless to do it any better. He had no clue of anything Latin related, and was from a small town, so he was not that used to how foreigners sound. So, yeah, if he had learnt some latin based language (or any, really) it would have been much easier for him. Anyway, I still think that the intelligent move would have been to let me translate using my Swiss-knife-like joke of an English proficiency to be more active in the conversation and, you know, enjoy life.
    So, yeah. Being a native English speaker is a privilege, but it does not guarantee that you speak Lingua Franca at all. Mandatory Lingua Franca or Foreign Language courses would make it way more of a privilege, in my opinion.

      Don't worry - I lived in France for six years and I still find some French movies hard to understand ;).

    Thank you for your videos :) I'm really enjoining it. Would you recommend videos or movies which are useful for learning English? In addition, phrasal verbs and some expressions that natives often use everyday life? :) Thank you Max Have a great day !!!

    Hi Max. Thanks for the video it helped me to understand there is a difference between series and daily life speaking. Also, do you have a problem about understanding different accents around the world? Or generally, do natives understand all accents completely? A conversation between An australian and a british for example

      You're welcome. :)
      Generally speaking, native speakers understand each other, even if they have different accents.
      There are a few exceptions:
      1. People who never watch movies/series from other countries (or who haven't travelled much) sometimes have difficulties understanding other accents.
      2. People often find very strong regional accents difficult to understand if they're not used to them. For example, I can normally understand Scottish and Irish people with no problems, but if their accent is very strong, I sometimes don't understand everything.
