I'm pragmatic. We've been whining about "bad" contracts for years that are now coming off the books. Why would we want to overpay for Soto to hit HRs in a park that is not conducive to the long ball? One serious injury and the Soto contract could clog any track to obtain quality players for years to come. IMO, bottom line for what you have laid out . . . 🚫Soto, 🚫Conforto, 🚫Baty. Last year, team chemistry was the best it had been in a long time. I'm hoping they don't futz it up. Sign Manaea and Alonzo. Focus on pitching and a bat that can play small ball for driving in runs in addition to the HR.
If you're being "pragmatic" then you sign a 26 year old Juan Soto who is a generational talent, a future HOFer, has playoff experience and a perennial all-star year after year. 1. The bad contracts you are referring to are to guys who youve paid past their prime. Something we've been doing for the past 30 years. Soto is entering his prime years 2. with 35 career games at Citifield, Soto has hit 26 HR with a .333 BA. I think he will do fine at home for 81 games 3. The serious injury theory applies to anyone and doesn't hold water. The reasons for NOT signing Juan Soto are not strong enough and would get you strung up by Mets fans. Its not your money.
@@TheFruitneyIt is the the fans’ money. Ticket prices, merchandise prices, parking, food, cable prices. Everything goes way, way up. He’s not paying the salary out of his own pocket. He’s a shrewd businessman who is looking to make a big profit, despite what he might say. Stearns is a smaller market guy who looks for the bargain deal. When he unloaded Scherzer, Verlander, and others weeks before the 2023 deadline, Cohen changed his philosophy about salaries. Plus, I don’t think he wants to start a budding war with his cross-town rival. Do I think Soto is worth the money? Yes, but I don’t think Uncle Stevie is willing to pay after 2023. Look how far the Mets got this season without Soto.
that must have been a different Pete Alonso who hit the biggest home run this year off of one of the best closers in in baseball in Milwaukee to advance them into the 2nd round of the playoffs
So you want a team stocked with 30-plus-year-old players, and trading off a ton of prospects for Crochet or Devin Williams. These moves would narrow the team contention window to about 4 seasons You can't have a sustainable winner if you trade off prospects while losing draft picks.
Ryan, I think I speak for a lot of Mets fans, NO, NO, NO to ever seeing Michael Comforto as a Mets again! 😡. I would say trade and extend Kyle Tucker if we don't get Soto. Hope it does not come to that.
I think a Conforto reunion could be good for the Mets. Obviously there are a lot of fans that wouldn’t want him back, but he’d be one of the better options if Soto is off the table.
A fifteen year 700 million dollar contract for Soto would seriously hamper the teams ability to sign more talent. If Soto stays healthy, you will be looking at a 270 average and 35 homers per year. Is that really worth that much money?
Winkler should be inexpensive and you have already seen that he can get along in the Mets clubhouse. True or not true he has been labeled as a bad clubhouse guy
Conforto is a much better outfielder than Winker plus he has decent speed and can play CF in an emergency. Traditionally Conforto has had excellent OBP with Mets it would probably improve.
PLAN B should be: Re- sign ALONSO, sign ANTHONY SANTANDER, CORBIN BURNES, either TANNER SCOTT or JEFF HOFFMAN. Then make a package with BRET BATY and trade for GARRET CROCHET.
Expect the White Sox to want more than just Baty. It would probably cost them Baty, Clifford and Jett Williams. I wouldn't pay that price for a pitcher who only has one year as a starter. It's not like you are trading for an established starter.
@@fr2ncm9 i would take more than that for Crochet and i would make the trade. These are not Stearns prospects and Streans prospects and he do a good job on drafting prospects just look at the Brewers. You can't prospect hug for good mlb talent
@@LSharp609 I'm not convinced that Crochet is the next Corbin Burnes. I'd rather see them add some really good pitching and a DH through free agency. That would certainly be good enough to contend. If you want Soto..... you should also want Pete.......the lineup is so much stronger with both added to Lindor. If Cohen truly bought this team to win a championship then Soto signing should not keep Pete out of the equation. Take Pete away and there are plenty of holes 6-9 in the lineup. I'm not feeling the Soto move if you're thinking he's the answer to the offense. Pete and Vientos behind Lindor and Soto would give opponents no room to breathe.
I'd rather spend on more pitching and some bats if they become available. Otherwise, more defense; chasing down a would-be big hit and gunning down runners from deep outfield makes for a very competitive team and enthusiastic fanbase. A single superstar eats a bunch of cash and oxygen but only sees the plate 4 or 5 times in a game. .500 batting is two runs a game; would the absence of quality defense not give up that much to opponents regularly? Pete Alonso is our guy, others would have to learn our system. Our good pitching is worth keeping, add to it.
I'd rather have the team hold out and go after Vladimir Gurerro, Kyle Tucker, and Bo Bichette. This gives you the chance to see what you have on the farm. You can still be a contending team if you have a solid rotation and bullpen. I want a sustainable winner, not go in and hope you can win a World Series within 3 or 4 years.
I think Pete absolutely. 6-7 years. Get an Ace. I like 5 years no more for a starter. 7 year deals for an arm blow up in your face. You never get more than 3 maybe 4 years. Try to get Walker Beuhler to be the 1A. Philly, dodgers will improve their rotation. No, no, no to conforto. I like winker for that edge & OBP. No more platoons for players that can’t field. I see vientos DH/3B that gives the Mets flexibility & has an arm to compensate for his shortcomings. Find a defensive 3B to fill that role. The most important part of this team really has to be BULLPEN, BULLPEN & BULLPEN. 98% of Games are decided by the bullpen. They need multiple arms & not from the bargain bin. The Mets lost how many games bc the relievers were not very good pitchers & they were overused. What cost the mets ultimately in the playoffs? No length from the starters & an exhausted bullpen. I can’t emphasize enough how a rock solid bullpen is & I would keep buto in his role & I will scream to the rafters. No to megill inthe starting rotation. Let him have a similar role as buto, so you don’t burn 3 relievers to get the 8th if you need to yank a starter. It’s why they need innings from those mid rotation pitchers. I would like TWO former closers & not be afraid to take the job from Diaz despite his contract. If he earns back the job. Great. The Mets lost last year for 2 main reasons. Starters going 5 innings more times than not, especially from Megill & houser. So, then you had 1 arm after another done from the bullpen. You need quality innings in the back end of the game. Are they consistently reliable? No. So you want quantity of quality arms, imho.
We don't need Soto if we are going to mortgage our future. He is a good player but he is not a five tool player. 3 tool at best. Sign Pete and get some pitching with that money and will be alright! LGM
How about going out and signing a whole new, quality pitching staff, instead of cobbling together guys from the minors and from the dumpster who will have e.r.a.s over 5.00?
I just see a Soto signing as much higher risk vs the current media love fest with this signing. I agree he is a generational talent, but a 12 - 14 year deal at $50M /year with the likelihood he is not going to be good enough to cover the outfield in 5 years, you're going to be paying 8 - 9 years at $50M for an aging DH? that is crazy and ill-advised in my opinion. Mets can get 2 all star quality players with that money on significantly shorter term and lower risk deals.
They shouldn't sign soto ! They should resign pete and go all in for santander and willy adames! Try land sasaki ans snell ! I don't see a team beating that line up !
