Fan Fact: The same computer being built in this video was also used to upload it to TH-cam. Made a nice overnight stability test.

Maxxarcade Ok, yesterday i got one for free with the original heatsink and i/o shield, but i don't have one of those power supply adapters :(
      Great video as always :)

+the mre nerd Can you send me a pic of the board? I'm curious what the heatsink looks like. I actually have two of these boards with CPU's, RAM and power adapters, but only one homemade heatsink.

The back plate on the 2011-3 socket does go all the way to the mounting holes, its so nice not having to worry about a back plate.

That behavior you'd seen where Windows Update just dumps files on a seemingly unrelated drive has been happening for a while. If you look around it seems like the updates will just arbitrarily pick a drive with a lot of free space available, regardless of its being your system drive or not. Was driving me crazy for a while, since I have my NAS mapped in such a way that it looks like a fixed disk.
Also, I've always felt that applying updates to Windows led to it becoming worse over time. I used to be overjoyed when I could slipstream a brand new Service Pack, since I could reformat and reinstall without the need to layer patch-upon-patch.
Great to see a new video from you, as always.

+LegionsOfAnon Oh yeah, it's funny to me to watch you try and play back 4k keeping your earlier videos in mind. We're a long ways away from trying to get Mint to play back 'high res' TH-cam videos on like a GeForce 4 or whatever.

    • @uxwbill
      @uxwbill 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+LegionsOfAnon I'd be somewhat surprised if a GeForce 4 could actually pump the pixels fast enough for 4K video, assuming there is an AGP platform anywhere that could host a CPU fast enough to decode 4K video completely in software. (I'm thinking it'd have to be LGA 775 at the earliest, and there probably aren't a whole lot of those paired with an AGP slot.)
Even if it could be done, I suspect the Nouveau driver will promptly halt and catch fire as that is its normal operating state.

*Danger!* Falling book of incoming commentary!
That case sure has been around the block a few times! Considering the twin fans in the front, would it really need a rear fan?
40% tougher likely does refer to a cheap and junky case that would fold flat upon being used as a chair. As for "quad cord"...well, I've never seen a single unit quad-redundant power supply, though perhaps they exist. That'd have to be the most cramped power supply casing ever!
I'd have probably gone for a Core i3 or lower end i5 rather than the Pentium G3258. The G3258 does seem to get some very good reviews, and all of the contemporary Pentium branded CPUs do seem to be pretty good stuff. I certainly wasn't unhappy with a Pentium G2020 CPU, although I did trade it in about a year later for a Core i5 3330 just to get better playability in Rigs of Rods.
I absolutely *despise* those plastic pushpin cooler mounts. I'm not sure why they are even still around. I think there are still a few x-plates and similar around, but they're hard to find and surprisingly expensive. And as for metal I/O shield fingers obstructing ports, I wouldn't know anything about that. It was always the Ethernet port getting blocked for me. Around the S478 era, Dell used a metal mesh in some of their I/O shields that wasn't too unlike what Asus included with that board.
It was nice of Asus to include PS/2 ports and headers for serial and parallel. Now all you need are a set of port breakouts from an old ISA multi-I/O card! Those Nuvoton LPCIO chips have floppy disk controller logic, and while I suppose almost nobody would ever use it in this day and age, it would have been nice to see Asus bring that out on the board as well. It wouldn't have cost them anything meaningful.
I know the agony of having to wait before a new and exciting system can be powered up, tested out and put into service.
There definitely has been a degradation in the performance of Windows Update on Windows 7 (and sometimes even Windows 8/8.1 as well) when it first goes out to find updates on a clean installation. I think the cause is twofold: the memory leak bug in TrustedInstaller and the ever increasing number of updates that are landing in the catalog.
I've seen a few fresh Windows XP installations skip over their 30 day activation grace period.
Later versions of the .NET Framework installer check with Microsoft for the latest updates. If Windows Update hasn't finished downloading and processing its catalog, this will take forever. A system I upgraded to Windows 7 a few months ago spent the better part of an afternoon doing this.
By comparison, a Pentium III (450 MHz) system I was diddling around recently was pulling around 35 watts from the power outlet. :-P We live in such amazing times when a modern system can get so much more use out of the energy consumed and idle itself down to such an extent. What was the system's energy use when you had that 4K video playing?
I don't have a display that can resolve 4K, and at my connection speed the point of doing so would be completely moot. And while I'm sure it's very old fashioned at this point, I still don't watch anything on TH-cam in HD (even though 720p is very attainable).
Whew! I think that about covers everything. Now if only TH-cam hadn't put a block on copying and pasting everything I'd written. Even as fast as I type...what a pain! (I suppose that's a hint to shorten my commentary significantly.)

    • @s8wc3
      @s8wc3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

I know this comment is a year old and you've probably figured this out already, but for those who are reading and don't know Microsoft has patched the issue with the Windows Update taking ages on Windows 7, however you do need to manually install KB3020369 and KB3172605.
And also, Asrock has used a similar Nuvoton chip on their Z77 Extreme6 board and actually used the floppy header, pretty surprising being a fairly high end board. I have one myself with an i7-3770, and I must say while the feature set and aesthetic of the board is excellent it's certainly not very reliable.

There's a lot of good PSU brands out there but for the last 3 years I swear by EVGA PSU's, built around 50 systems with them in them from gaming towers to office machines and work stations. I have always liked EVGA products and the 2 times I have had to use there support it was the best experience with a OEM I have ever had.

The one thing that I truly love Linux for, apt-get -- when doing updates. It's such a hands on approach when getting updates or fixing corrupt installs. That blind unknown period when Windows updates and the stupid cylon indicator animation drives me up the wall. You honestly never know how long it's going to take, if it's going to succeed, etc.
If anything, Windows should do a command line update option like apt-get.
hell, I wouldn't mind one bit if they cloned apt-get for command prompt, PowerShell, blind luck, what ever it's called.

I was having trouble with Windows 7 on a laptop I'm working on, so I set it aside for awhile. After watching this video and seeing how easy it was to install and update Windows 10 (along with drivers) I went ahead and upgraded the laptop. I'm starting to like Windows 10 a lot now.

      Dell Latitude E6500.
The only driver Windows 10 couldn't find was one for the Broadcom Unified Security Hub (USH) which is part of the Dell ControlVault platform. The driver had to be downloaded from Dell's site. Although the ControlVault driver doesn't specify compatibility with Windows 10, it does however specify compatibility with Windows 8 and 8.1 which I figured is close enough. The driver did install correctly.

Maxxarcade It's the graphics drivers that have me wary of upgrading some PCs I have. For example, I have a netbook (Intel Atom N2600 w/GMA 3600) which came with Windows 7 pre-installed and it performs well. However, I recently learned that Intel will not update the drivers for the GMA3600 for either Windows 8 or 10. Bummer.

    • @nathanlast4173
      @nathanlast4173 8 ปีที่แล้ว

+Andrew Perry From my experience, Windows 7 drivers will work on Windows 10 99% of the time. (yes, I mean 99%). Try the upgrade or clean install and see if windows update will do it. if it won't, manually install the driver from the manufacturer, and worst case scenario, use device manager to find the package driver and install that.

Future ref: For the dot net 4.0 install, download the offline install package from Microsoft, disconnect from Internet, install. For some reason it hangs right there in most cases if it's online.
Part of the issue with Windows 7 update is the catalog is massive, especially on a new install. The old update system is kinda klunky. Works fine when there are 20-30 even 50 updates, but over 100, you're talking hours. 200 on even a fast box, overnight. I hate it but it's a necessary evil when getting some "older" boxes up and running. (3-5 year old Optiplex machines that I often get)

I think Windows 8.1 automatically installs drivers too if it's connected to the internet. The Windows Vista and 7 "search automatically for updated driver software" has always been broken and never worked, at least in my experience.
When i install Windows 7, i get isos from this Gen2 guy or getintopc, they have all the latest updates already installed, and i just use my key to activate it automatically.

I tell ya the worst thing about installing Windows 7 unless you make a prebuilt usb stick with all the updates it takes forever to get all the way up to date with in a day. I think the biggest flaw is just getting windows updates to find all the updates get started and then after they are ready to install it takes forever no matter how fast of computer you have. Nothing like a fun surprise that after all the work getting windows 7 ready he wants windows 10 lol

.NET framework not installing is also caused by the Windows Update services being busy. Those svchost processes are indeed related. It's been like that on fresh installs for Windows Vista for quite some time now and it seems that the issue is now present in Windows 7 as well.

    • @Pukkie201195

+Ricardo Windows Installers often extract their temp files to random hard disks. I think they use disks with the most free space available. They usually get deleted when an update is installed though. Idk why it didn't for you, but those folders usually stay there when a PC gets turned off during installation or a disk unplugged

    *Warning*: Wall-o-Text Below.
Usually when I do fresh installs it's with a copy of Win7 that has all the most recent updates give or take a few months, already slipstreamed in. Most people have a problem with using slipstreamed copies because of the trustability of the person or group supplying it, but generally if you use common sense you'll find one that you like, and that fixes the issue of having to do so many updates. I'm fairly certain there's also a tutorial for doing this yourself with a clean ISO as well, I've just never gone and looked up any, since there are ready-made slipstreamed ISOs available with and without a loader for a, cough-cough easy activation of windows every time, cough-cough.
On an unrelated-drawing-into-related note, 2016 is certainly turning out to be the year everyone repurposes old cases for use with newer systems, as I've said before in a comment on an older video earlier this month. I completed that HP NetServer box that I turned into a sleeper system, finally, a couple days ago-- different board, i5-2500k and 16GB of RAM. (Picture here of the finished build, complete with annie-mays and an iPod Mini for excrement-posting on a certain technology imageboard we do not speak the name of: a.pomf.cat/zxhzww.jpg ) it was your last workshop PC build that gave me the idea to look for a different heatsink than what I was planning on using, and after finding the TX3 to not be in my budget range, settled on an eBay special slightly-used CNPS5X for $20 like I've already been using elsewhere.
Breaking back from that, EVGA is a great company, just be sure to register that PSU on their website so you get the warranty in the proper manner. I just had to register the P67-SLI from said box with them, as it had had a few months left of warranty, so I could get an I/O Shield that was missing. (They made my day and sent it to me for free!) I can confirm that EVGA also uses the foam-backed foil on their I/O Shield as well for that board, and it's reeeeeeeally nice if done right. The only issue I forsee is what happens to that foam over time, looking at its density; it's going to possibly become flaky and/or goopy within 10 years. it reminds me of the foam-backed foil used in earlier Compaq Portable keyboards as well as other keyboards in the 80s and early 90s (rare) that were cheaply made.
on the subject of the CPU, the G3258 is an excellent overclocker I'm told, and that alone makes it prime meat for a high-reliability application such as this. it's also the entire reason it has an unlocked multiplier. If you're not overclocking (and I know it will never be in this box ever!) it WILL last a long, long time. Apparently the norm with this CPU is to overclock it to 4.3GHz on the stock heatsink without breaking a sweat, the only downside overall at any speed, even just stock, being poor multicore performance compared to a normal i5 or i7, which is to be expected.
I wish that box a long life, and the case an even longer one for years to come. I just hope full-size ATX boards continue to be a thing for at least another decade.

I have had nothing but trouble with windows 10, my network printer does not work and I have no desire to buy another colour laser printer when it works just fine under windows 7 and all my linux based computers I have here.
If MS forces me to use windows 10 by sneeky windows 7 updates I will migrate all my windows computers to linux and not bother with windows, I have just one device I will need to test first and that is my scanner, VNC works well under linux as does all my other programs.. some very old legacy stuff works just fine under wine so the move will not hurt too much.
My housemate has a laser printer connected to his computer so I need to test how that will work under linux (will test that later today using the laptop)

  • @renyn21

I see that you chose regular mbr mode when you booted from the usb. Now thats not really a big deal but whatever. windows 7 was better before, but microsoft is trying really hard to push windows 10 on everyone. I dont know if they do it for spying on the people that don't care or that think cortana is awesome(which btw is pretty deeply integrated into the os with the windows search engine which results in cortana still running even if you disable her). I think this may be their intention but im not sure of their reasons. They deliberatedly "crippled" their services relating everything else than windows 10. it begun in win 8 times when i got an asus laptop with an intel baytrail soc (full size laptop with a 4 watt cpu) that while intel maintained chipset and graphics drivers for even win xp, asus decided to use wireless network devices with no freaking drivers for windows 7. It refused to work if i tried to manually use the driver files from win 8. So after i was almost done configuring the laptop as the owner wanted because they did not care about win 8 and wanted 7 i had to tell them that there was no way to use the included wireless on their brand new sistem. I ended up installing win 8.1 and everything worked. Back to what i was saying about microsoft pushing win 10 even to people that are not interested. They only have directx 12 on win 10 (not 100% sure on that). And they announced that processors newer than skylake and i assume amd zen will only have patches for windows 10. I didn't word that properly but they said that they wont make cpu related updates to older os's only to windows 10. They are reffering to things like hyperthreading support back in the p4 days or when they released a patch that allowed windows to better utilize the cores/modules in amd fx chips. That wont be that big unless some new cpu technology arises but still. Microsoft is really pushing win 10 and flushing everything else faster than before. Maybe because win 7 is a good xp candidate and they dont want to have it live this long because they want to make windows be a service you pay for every year or idk. They certainly pushed alot of people with directx and the free upgrade and crap. On a sidenote im not too fond of the white looking status bar on programs. I made it transparent and have the color of the taskbar that is being taken from the wallpaper. I am not sure why microsoft is pushing win 10 so hard but i am not feeling good about it. I am running 10 too but i have an older pc and when 10 launched i had that itch to be on the bleeding edge and it worked pretty good considering i upgraded from a used install of win 7. It felt a bit slower on my ssd than win 7 and idk what's up with that. But comparing it to win 8 launch which was a total shitstorm, it worked for 3 days before almost turning unusable all of a sudden and being buggy and crap and needing a reinstall. All on a fresh install of 8, not even talking about upgrading which resulted in an unstable mess. So yea, win 10 is a decent os after you work on the appearance and turn off the spyware crap. But its a teeny tiny bit slower than win 7 on my sistem, ill blame that on not the best optimization on a sistem like mine. Still i'm not sure why microsoft promotes it so hard. Ok, its 2:10 in the middle of the night, almost morning and i've been writing on this comment for 30 minutes atleast on the crappy touch keyboard of my phone, i really should stop rambling and go to sleep, im still only 17 without a month and a few days. Nice build video as always maxarcade. Always nice seeing you in my youtube feed, especially with a computer related video. I have been following your videos for around 2 years or more. Hope you will give me a reply if you know what are microsoft's intentions with win 10.

your windows 7 iso must be old and far behind on updates. I created an iso file with updates up to january 10th now updates don't take so long to do maybe the same 20 minutes you get in windows 10. I used NTlite to integrate updates into a windows 7 iso. I do this because I work in IT at the university I used to attend and most of my day is just reinstalling windows and I was sick of waiting at the checking for updates screen for hours. The university does not want to upgrade to windows 10 for compatibility reasons otherwise I would have jumped on that.
