Addressing misconceptions about his fighting style, Rigondeaux expressed, "People were saying that I get on the bicycle and run a lot. Well, that’s not true, so I wanted to show them I could fight in short distance and I wanted to get a couple of rounds in. Then that left hand came and ended the fight."
Despite Rigondeaux's decisive blow, Ceja believed he could have continued and questioned referee Mora's decision. Rigondeaux, at 38, improved his record to 19-1 with his 13th knockout, showcasing his skills on the undercard of Jermell Charlo-Jorge Cota at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas. Ceja, with a record of 32-4 (28 KOs), experienced his third knockout or technical knockout defeat as a professional.
When Mora stopped the fight, Rigondeaux was trailing on all three scorecards. Judges McKaie, Cheek, and Moretti had Ceja ahead through seven rounds, with CompuBox indicating that Ceja landed 60 more punches than Rigondeaux (225-of-627 to 165-of-479). Ceja excelled in power punches (222-of-592 to 138-of-330), while Rigondeaux demonstrated effectiveness with his jab (27-of-149 to 3-of-35).
The eighth round featured a fierce exchange of body shots, leading to Mora deducting a point from both Rigondeaux and Ceja. Despite multiple warnings, Ceja was warned again for low blows in the seventh round. Ceja swiftly rose to his feet, but Mora, dissatisfied with Ceja's response to his commands, halted the scheduled 12-round, 122-pound WBC elimination match at 2:59 of the eighth round.
