Thank you for this. At odds with instructors who insist thumb must behind neck at all times. Great clarification

This is how I feel about most techniques. As long as you aren't doing physical damage to your body, you should just do whatever works best for you.

looking at the neck from behind gives it a really good perspective to this question… good job!

Thanks....I am an absolute beginner with guitar playing....but my thumb moved by nature a bit more like yours.... and not like everyone is telling....

I think what I teach is kind of a hybrid between what you just said, and a stricter classical guitar approach. I teach my students that the thumb should generally track with the middle finger As you move around the neck. This results in a quite mobile thumb position though with it generally staying more behind the neck. When they're more advanced and learning certain techniques like bending, I start telling them that some over the fretboard works better in certain contexts and they have to use their intuition as to what feels right for a given passage

Also, thumb over is great for playing licks while playing chords. Like hendrix/mayer etc etc

Classically trained people are taught not to break the rules, as if there was a police officer, waiting to a rest of them if they did something outside of what they were taught

I assure you that as someone who has severe back pain , not from guitar, but please be careful. do some exercises and stretch before you play! 🙏 anyway if they don't care that's thier loss 🤷

@Nickshreds890 as long as you don't have pain, why does thumb position matter for non-classical guitar? I'm just curious

Ugh that used to piss me off. Theres no rhyme or reason for a stock thumb position. Put the shit where its comfortable for the lick you're playing.

Travis pickers often fret notes with it & many players fret the F# with it on the Low E string when they play a D chord.I never realized how important the thumb actually was until mine developed arthritis & eventually ended my playing career.

sorry to hear that. There's an instrument called a harpejji which is kind of like a guitar/keyboard with strings you tap and even bend. I think it is played without thumbs.

I've been practicing legato with my thumb behind the neck, which feels so foreign to me because I'm self taught and played the other way for over 20 years. I can definitely feel soreness which leads me to wonder if I'm just working out unused muscles or if I'm doing something wrong and causing more harm than good.
