Im 73 years old and have been a fan of the Osmonds since they first appeared on The Andy Williams Show. Though most are now retired, Donny and Marie still perform. The Osmonds have been performing for 50 + years and play over 20 instruments.

I grew up in the 70s..The Osmonds and the Jackson 5 were everywhere... They were also good friends. Donny and Michael especially.
Actually the Osmonds came first. They sang and performed in the early 60s already on shows like the Andy Williams show.
I think Donnys first time out he was 4.
My walls were covered with Donny, Michael and David Cassidy.

In response to the J5 hitting the pop charts, the osmonds pivoted from their barbershop genre roots to pop rock. One bad apple the song was submitted to but turned down by 75. 2 amazing family acts

The Osmonds had a Saturday morning cartoon and this was the intro song. I suggest playing Crazy Horses. It is a bit crazy but was one of the hardest rock songs of the year when it came out. The Osmonds came from the city that I currently live. The four older boys had a barber shop quartet and were performing at Disneyland. They came to the attention of Andy Williams and became regulars on his weekly TV show and did whatever they asked them to. Don't eventually joined the group and became the main focus of stand even though his brother Merrill sang the majority of the song leads. Donny and their sister Marie joined up and had a TV show and a couple of hit records. Donny was also the one that has a solo career.

Jackson 5 had their first pop hit in 1969 and the Osmonds had their first pop hit in 1971. This song, "One Bad Apple" was originally written for the Jackson 5 and Berry Gordy turned it down, so the Osmonds recorded it instead. Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond (the kid in this video) did sound alike when they were young -- they both had that high angelic little kid voice. In fact, the song "Ben" was originally written for Donny Osmond to sing and Donny Osmond couldn't record the song "Ben" because he was out on the road touring with his brothers, so because Michael Jackson also had a high voice, they asked Michael Jackson to record the song instead and it ended up being Michael Jackson's first solo hit. Michael Jackson and Donny Osmond did have a connection and were friendly as they both had a lot in common when they were growing up. They both came from big families, both were pushed out in front as "the stars" of the group, both had a lot of pressure put upon them, both had demanding fathers (although George Osmond wasn't abusive, he did demand a lot from his kids). Both groups were equally successful in the early 70s, although the Jacksons had more hits. Then Donny Osmond did a very popular TV show in the late 70s, but once the show was canceled, his career struggled and then Michael Jackson hit super stardom with his albums "Off the Wall" and "Thriller". The 80s were not kind to Donny Osmond career wise, but he did eventually regroup and did alright for himself with Broadway and Las Vegas where he still performs.

It's so fun to see your eyes widen and hearing you exclaim about the similarities between the Osmond brothers & the Jackson 5, while simultaneously, I know that; yes, their careers ran almost parallel to one another, Donny and Michael were friends, the Jackson 5 were told to watch the Osmonds to pick up a few things, (and I'm pretty sure the Osmonds equally checked the Jackson 5's style too), and lastly, the Jackson 5 didn't have time to accept/cut One Bad Apple when it was written with them in mind to perform it, (they were touring), so it was offered/given to The Osmonds instead!
These 2 groups were all the shite in my childhood-teen & I remained a fan of Donny's solo hits and Michael's & the love hasn't changed since!
Both groups had their own cartoon show every Saturday. Both ran tours around the globe. And both Donny & Michael branched off their brothers' group to launch successful solo careers.
Michael changed music forever, crossing racial & genre boundaries to unite people, simply through their love and admiration for his wonderously, gifted talents. He is had our hearts from his first appearance! He remains unmatched/unsurpassed in his dance, musical genuis & legendary stage performances.
His written messages that he sang to the world were life changing & remain the same relevant & necessary calls of action for mankind to finally reach a humble state of being that serves a purpose greater than themselves!
Shut up, I'ma cry! I've loved him since I was 6-7 yrs old.
Grew up with him in my ear or watching him perform & continued until his tragic murder.I miss him more.
Donny also branched off for a solo career, then was front stage with his baby sister Marie, on a weekly t.v. variety show, where he was 'a little bit rock and roll' and Marie was 'a little bit country'; (music), while the rest of the Osmond brothers were hard at work, behind the scenes, producing, editing, & creating the show from their studio in Utah.
It was successful for several years.
The Osmonds were loved and a number one hit for so many years, performing regularly, in Branson Missouri & retired a few years ago.
They've always been in our view and doing something fab.
Donny & Marie did many cruise tours, Marie made several country hits, they did a weekly talk show, & Donny put out another song just a few years ago. Just to name a few things.
They still sing just as great as ever, never having lost their fans or talent! That's just a small summary.
Fun fact: Donny dances beside Weird Al in his White and Nerdy video.
These two groups are a legendary and timelessly acclaimed. I am proud that they have always been, the very firsts of hosts of great people, whom I've admired my entire lifetime & still turn to for adding joy& happiness to my life; all through their gifted talents in music & dance, as well as, all that they've shared with us.
Iconic and unsurpassed, they truly have left and will leave a legacy for all to enjoy!
You should listen/watch The Osmonds, Down By The Lazy River

Teenage Donny and Michael hosting awards:
    th-cam.com/video/jaX72-orftU/w-d-xo.html
The Osmonds and the Jackson 5 were always making guest appearances on weekly television shows.
Here are The Jackson 5 doing a customized, (for Carol's comedy), version of ABC with the legendary Carol Burnett!
One of my faves. Michael calling David Cassidy old is so funny & his little brother's, "This is a natural" while patting & shaping his fro! LOL! Priceless!
But pay attention to these pros as they continue on in their live performance, regardless of the earth actually quaking & shaking!
    Enjoy!

Donny is the little kid. He started singing at age 5. The 4 older boys started out as Barbershop Quartet in 1958.
Michael and Donny became very close friends. Donny wrote a song and wanted to record it with Michael, but that was when all the scandals came around on Michael, then Michael passed away. Donny sang it at his Vegas show. Donny does a rap song about his life, but he had a contest for someone to sing parts of that song since he can not hit those notes like he did then. It's so hard to believe Donny has been in show business for 60 years now.

The Osmonds were very talented brothers who could sing and dance and who each could play a minimum of 4 instruments. Their peak came in 1974 with their concept-album The Plan which they largely wrote and produced themselves, which is incredible because they were only 25, 23, 21, 19 and 17 years old at that time. You should really listen to it in its entirety: th-cam.com/play/OLAK5uy_ksp4_0tCEa5C1SP1ZFUTtwQdTXizOZwZ0.html Another great clip is YoYo th-cam.com/video/jlA-z0du1Pg/w-d-xo.html. The youngest brother in this clip (not of the family, because that is Jimmy) is Donny Osmond (1957) who became the break-out idol of the group of brothers and - like Michael Jackson - became a big solo artist, but also spent several years as a duo with their only sister, Marie. Much later he was THE BEST Joseph in Joseph and the Technicolor Dream Coat and sang some great songs there, from the movie: Any Dream Will Do th-cam.com/video/z5Lg4trPUJc/w-d-xo.html and Close Every Door th-cam.com/video/d8reEiq4ui8/w-d-xo.html and live Any Dream Will Do th-cam.com/video/a2r6tYg1VEY/w-d-xo.html Close Every Door th-cam.com/video/zbQ9SvTo88g/w-d-xo.html. Then after the older Osmonds performed many times on Andy Williams show, one day I guess the family thought it was time to introduce Donny. He must have been about 7 or 8. The rest is history.

You either liked David Cassidy or Donny Osmond in the early 70's. I liked David - but the Osmonds still had some good songs!! I loved the J5 too.
