Reich is brilliant as always; our democracy would be greatly served if he had a much broader platform to share his ideas. As to the event itself: there are a variety of ways of interviewing, many specific to the setting (Hoschchild's forte is interviewing research subjects, drawing them out to build trust; serving as a bridge between invited guest and audience is definitely NOT her forte as demonstrated by this event). When your role as interviewer is to be a bridge between an audience and an invited guests, the less you interject of yourself, the better the quality of connection between the audience and the invited guest. As much as I like Arlie Hochschild, and greatly respect her work, she's mis-using her fieldwork interview style in this conversation; it doesn't work in this setting, and it gets in the way of listening. All the "yes," "uh," "hmms" that she constantly interjects as Reich is speaking is so distracting. And her need to constantly give approval to Reich and his comments results in disconnects; this is especially when she nterjections of "Wonderful" after Reich has spoken about very dire realities in our society. Roschchild would benefit from studying the interview style of someone like Jeffrey Brown of PBS, he is a master at listening intently, getting out of the way, and creating a seamless bridge between audience and guest.
